Yes Ladies...We're putting BEEF FAT on our faces!! Come over to my kitchen and have some fun as we make Tallow Balm - that is actually quite wonderful. It's a homemade moisturizer scented with fragrant essential oils that will soften your skin beautifully and make you smell heavenly!! Love, Mary

I think it's the most gentle type of oil/fat to use don't have to worry about any chemicals or worry about it going bad,not unless the liquid oils would be out of date.

Dear Mary, thank you for sharing your expertise. I have made tallow balm with olive oil, but consistency became watery, it solidifies when i put in fridge, then once i take out of fridge after couple of hours becomes watery? Is that normal? How could i make them more solid as i want to give to my friends?

@@dariusanddara9854 - Great question! Are you using actually tallow made from suet? If so that should be quite hard and you should only be adding in a small bit of olive oil. If you are using a mock "tallow" made from miscellaneous beef fat, that will be much softer and create the problems you are talking about. Love, Mary

I am going to render some beef suet I got from the local butcher shop, and use silicone baking cups. I thought I'd pour 1/4 cup of the rendered tallow in each cup, let it solidify, and store them in a wide mouth canning jar. That way I could easily take out how much tallow I would need for a recipe. Digging it out of a jar is hard work!

I have made the tallow cream using an infused olive oil! I use Calendula, plantain, comfrey, yarrow, birch and lavender herbs. It is a great infused oil to use for salve as well!

This balm is like magic! I just made some for myself and my grandson, as we both struggle with eczema and very sensitive skin. With just olive oil added to the tallow, and no essential oils, it is the most soothing lotion I've ever tried. I mean, it's possible to just rub on straight tallow, but this form is so much nicer to use, and fun to watch whip up, as well! Thank you so much--the good you do keeps on helping others, Mary.

@@MarysNest I've just started rendering my own tallow- I have cut seed oils out of my diet and just cooking with the tallow and duck fat as well as topically (tallow and castor). how long have you need using the tallow on your skin and internally before this video? Everyone who i see that uses tallow has skin that looks AMAZING and so young for their age- i have horrible skin and an very hopeful that over time it might reverse with this. 😊🙏

I can't remember if mentioned I finally tried this or not. It's a few days now into trying it and to say I love it is as big an understatement as is possible. I have loved my bee's wax hardened salves more than anything I could buy in a store, but the tallow takes it to a whole 'nother level. Possibly because tallow is more like our own body fat. It doesn't just set on top of the skin and protect it, it seems to actually absorb into the rough spots, bringing the hard, dry, flaky, cracked areas back at least 50% and I'm understating that, to keep anyone from being disappointed. I asked the man in the meat department of the grocery to save me a pound of the hard fat and it rendered to I'd say at least half that amount. I got the cracklings too brown and wound up having to 'wash' it at least 10 times; times 3 through 8 I added a sprinkle of baking soda and a few drops of vinegar to try and get the fried smell out of it. I wasn't sure it would work, but felt I had ruined it and had nothing to loose. The last wash was water only. Sounds like a lot of work, but it only took 5 minutes at a time. In the end, I had a beautiful, 100% scentless block of tallow. I made 1/4th of it into a salve using grape seed oil. Grape seed oil doesn't last long outside of the fridge, so I'm only taking a small jar out at a time to use, but it is the fastest absorbing oil I've found. I added a drop of oregano essential oil. My heels have never given up their crusty cracks without a long soak and scrub with sand paper! Until now. At first, especially if you are using it on your lips, it might feel almost waxy, but in a very few minutes that feeling goes away. You might be tempted to say I don't like the feel of this compared to other salves; even store bought chap sticks, but give it 5 minutes and you'll change your mind. I'll be saving my bee's wax for my favorite candle's. You, my dear are a national treasure!

Do you have a video of prepping the tallow? A thing to note about essential oils, they evaporate rather quickly. Putting them in oil slows the evaporation, but you are probably still losing quite a bit in the hour it sits out cooling. Since you whip it you'd get more from the essential oils if you added them during the whipping process.

Add arrowroot flour to keep the oilyness to a minimum. Not much is needed. I made this using avocado oil, sweet almond oil, and castor oil. Olive oil only has a shelf life of 1 year, which is why i used avocado oil. I used to make soaps and lotions, so this helped me to decide, as avocado oil is also very good for your skin. A good reason to not use water with oil is because it can mold easily when water is introduced. When making lotions if you were going to sell it, a preservative should be used in that setting because lotions and cosmetics can easily be introduced to water. However, in your own home setting, it wouldn't be much of a concern since you can monitor the storage properly...i love tallow and all the benefits natural oils and butters provide, thank you so much Mary!

Makes excellent soap as well. I use the water method to render it and strain, then when hardened I scrape the bits off and it is nice and white. I like coconut oil in my cream. It is my understanding that pregnant women should not use essential oils and children under 1 yr. old. I could be wrong though. I love lavender and rosemary together. Love this video Mary.

I am on a healing journey at the moment and have been looking into the work of Weston Price, so yes, very interested in traditional diet and have already subscribed. I will joint the FB group too. I am so glad I have found your channel. I also wanted to ask, do you recommend any particular brand of essential oils? Looking online frankincense oil varies from £7.00 to £50! @@MarysNest

@@shellbell8062 - Hi Shell, So glad we are on this healing journey together! Yes, essential oils can be expensive!! I really like the Mountain Rose Herb company. Not sure if they are available in your area though. But I think that you have to be careful. The old adage is usually true - you get what you pay for. I like Mountain Rose Herb company because I believe them to be very reputable. Plus, their essential oils are organic. I do not like the oils that are sold by the multi-level marketing companies. I just don't trust them. But just my humble opinion. In any event, I really am so glad that you are here so that we can make nutrient dense foods together. I have a website too - by the same name - Mary's Nest. I will be putting in a new design soon - hopefully by this summer which will be easier to navigate. Stay tuned! Love, Mary

Sharon MacKenzie - I understand completely. I always think the best place to start is with a simple roast chicken (basted with butter for a super crispy skin) and mashed potatoes with lots of butter and homemade gravy (made with bone broth). Hard for anyone to resist. A great place to start with ferments are fermented carrots. Once they Lee fermented, add maple syrup. They taste pretty great! Love, Mary❤️😘❤️ PS...Here is a link to my ferments playlist that you can look through: ru-vid.com/group/PLkRuW3pBo2U2U2yksiRxOUH5GwJDebtMO

@@MarysNest Yummy and nutritious! But organic butter is so expensive. Do you have any suggestions on how to find a good source of affordable organic butter?
@MarysNest
@MarysNest 4 года назад
Sharon MacKenzie - That is an excellent question. First, let me say in case anyone suggests this...buying organic butter is less expensive than making your won - since organic cream is quite expensive for the amount of butter that you will be able to retrieve. That said, do not worry in the beginning if you can’t afford organic butter. Buy whatever butter fits in with your grocery bill. Yes, it may not be as perfect as organic butter, however, I believe that it is better than eating prepared (packaged) foods, fast food, vegetable oils, etc. As a good friend of mine says...when you are getting started with traditional foods, grow where you are planted. Start where you can and within your budget. Do not put stress on the family budget. That is not good for anyone’s health. Roast a chicken - any chicken - throw in some veggies and butter and sit down at the kitchen table together as a family, say a prayer of thanksgiving for the abundance of food in front of you, and then enjoy! I am a firm believer that I do not want people to be discouraged from eating “Real” traditional foods because they can’t afford them. Yes, of course organic, pasture raised, grass-fed...all of that is wonderful but foods raised in other means should not be condemned. It is still real food. And unfortunately, many people feel that if they can’t do it perfectly, they throw in the towel. Commercially raised food is not the end of the world. It is still better than packaged food and fast food. My attitude is the same about cooking equipment. That is why I show how to make sourdough starter and sourdough bread without a thermometer, proofing box, etc. So buy whatever chicken and butter are in your price range for your budget and enjoy a nutritious meal. I hope this advice helps. I am not a purist. LOL!! I want people to be successful on this traditional foods journey - and it is a journey. So do not let perfectionism get in the way if certain types of foods are out of your price range. Just buy what you can afford. You will be much better off in the long run. Love, Mary
