I did this recipe on our Pellet smoker recently - I left out the liquid smoke and just ran these at 225 for 3 hours. turned out great!! I'm doing these again tomorrow but will grill the bacon with the brats and onion and just mix into the dish instead of the shingle method.

Made these for the 4th of July and they were a hit. I used one can of all the beans and added two tablespoons of butter to the Brats and onion to give it a little richness based on one comment I read. He said the beans were bland underneath, so butter helped that according to my family. I don't eat meat. Will definitely bake these again for my family. Thanks for sharing the recipe.

Looks delicious!I live in Mexico, and it's wonderful to learn their culinary arts and share mine, and most of my offerings are enjoyed by my friends, but I've learned to eat baked beans by myself. I'm American, but I don't like these sweet beans. There is a way to make them not sweet, though. Basically, you make a similar sauce using pureed tomato (canned or fresh) instead of ketchup or BBQ sauce. And you use all plain beans, no Bush's.

I aught my niece to drain the sauce from the canned baked beans and whatever enhancements to the sauce into the pan that the bacon and other meat ad vegetables were cooking in. If you cook th sauce part alone until it thickens up a bit, you cut an enormous amount of time off of your oven time when you combine the sauce and the beans.

Long time ATK, CI, and CC follower here. We have made 100's of their recipes. The thing about this one is it makes way too much for the normal backyard get together so we halved it to fit in our 9x13 baking dish and it looked really good coming out of the oven but nobody really liked it. Turned out rather bland. We did break the brats up too fine so maybe that made a difference but it needs something and I'm not quite sure what it is. Maybe brown sugar? Maybe green pepper? Sorry to be negative but just wanted to share our experience.

He wasn’t much of a cook in general but when he was in the mood for comfort food he had some go to dishes and this was one of them. But I'm not a fan of the barbecue sauce that apparently has one approval from ARK has the best barbecue sauce. Bullseye? I think? If I don't make my own, I tended to go with either open-pit or Stubbs. Even so, this is a great recipe, but I can only make it when I'm feeding a small crowd. So good though!

Here is the recipe for the Best Barbecue Beans: Ingredients: 1 and 1/4 pounds of bratwurst (casings removed) 6 slices of thick-cut bacon (cut into 1-inch pieces) 2 onions (chopped) 1/2 cup of bottled barbecue sauce 1/2 cup of ketchup 1/2 cup of water 2 tablespoons of spicy brown mustard 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar 1 teaspoon of granulated garlic 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper 1 teaspoon of liquid smoke 2 cans (28 ounces each) of baked beans 2 cans (15 ounces each) of cannellini beans (drained) 2 cans (15 ounces each) of pinto beans (drained) 1 can (10 ounces) of Rotel tomatoes (tomatoes with green chilies) Instructions: Cook the bratwurst in a skillet until the fat starts to render out. Break it down into smaller pieces and cook for about 5 minutes. Cut the bacon into 1-inch pieces and cook them until crisp. Use the rendered fat from the bratwurst to cook the chopped onions until browned. In a bowl, mix together the barbecue sauce, ketchup, water, mustard, apple cider vinegar, granulated garlic, cayenne pepper, and liquid smoke. Add the cooked onions and bratwurst to the sauce mixture and stir well. Pour in the baked beans, cannellini beans, pinto beans, and Rotel tomatoes. Stir everything together until well combined. Pour the bean mixture into a 13x9-inch baking dish and top with the cooked bacon, shingling it on top. Bake in a preheated 350°F oven for 1 and a half hours, or until the sides are bubbling and the bacon turns dark brown. Allow the beans to cool for 15 minutes before serving. Enjoy your delicious barbecue beans!

As a "SLIGHT" recipe change, skip the liquid smoke. Use a disposable foil pan. Fire up the CHARCOAL grill, and get it running, to produce a 350 degree heat, running indirect. Add smoke wood, your choice. If you like regular smoke flavor, use hickory or pecan. (Hickory light.) I prefer Mesquite wood, and Mesquite charcoal. Follow the rest of the recipe. If you have a wood fired smoker, PERFECT! steve

But damm, using a can of baked beans ( granted it was Bush beans, good stuff in a can) but I thought this was about MAKING back yard beans. OVEN! How about making it in the backyard, in a bbq? Now the different beans looks good and so did the sauce. However replace the water with Jack Daniel's and you will level up on flavor and really give it the right texture. I always add 1/2 cup of Jack Daniel's to 1 cup Bullseye bbq sauce. Definitely like the two meat deal.
