A bit of advice for those viewing this: this video is the first I saw and used to make my first coldbrew batch. The coarser you grind your coffee, the better. The finer the grind, the thinner the coffee. You want coarse (large) grinds, so the water absorbs more of the coffee as possible. I have an electric burr grinder, and I set it to the coarsest possible setting (opposite of finest), and the coldbrew comes out great! Also, you want to make sure you use filtered or bottled water. If your tap water has noticeable chlorine in it, it's going to come out in your coldbrew and ruin it. Also, 24 hours steeping time is best, especially if you let it steep in the fridge IF you don't squeeze the bag like he did. Squeezing the bag is kind of a bad thing.
@jlopez47
@jlopez47 6 лет назад
Another thing, depending on the type of coffee beans you use; if you use a lighter roast bean, you'll see some of the oils solidify after 2 or 3 days and rise to the top. It looks like tiny little white worms that float to the top after a few days in the fridge. You want another filtering step besides the cloth he recommends here. I use Toddy filters, which are thick white wooly disks that filter out a lot of the oils and fats that solidify later. Thanks to the Protein Chef for this video, though. I've been enjoying my own coldbrew ever since!

I now use the cookie jar that is used in the video - I don't use any nut bag or any other filter - the grounds go right into the water. When done, I have a jar that fits into the cookie jar and I "scoop" out the coffee - I have 4 800ml glass bottles into which I pour the coffee. I use a funnel with a tea strainer on top. It takes two "scoops" per 800 ml bottle. Then, for the last bottle, I don't use the jar scoop - I just pour right from the cookie jar into the tea strainer sitting atop the funnel sitting atop the 800 ml bottle. For me this works wonderfully well. Quick and easy - and no spillage at all. The 800 ml bottles are the glass bottles in which Voss sells drinking water - they are perfect right cylinders so the take up little real-estate in the refrigerator. I now dilute the coffee 1/3 water, 2/3 coffee. The brewing is done at room temperature. I have two sets of four bottles so I can have as many as 8 bottles in the fridge at one time. When I open the fourth bottle then I make another batch...brew 24 hours, bottle and put in fridge. Rotate stock. Oh, I also stir the brewing coffee every so often, as the grounds will settle. Don't know if that makes any difference at all. Honestly, I don't know if this is a good method or not - except that it works wonderfully well for me. I tried other methods of coffee brewing, like french press, and other methods of cold brewing - but this "crude but effective" method is perfect for me. If my description is not clear I can post some photos - and please feel free to ask questions if you have any...Oh, and I also drink the coffee cold right from the refrigerator - no more heating the coffee at all.

He said the use of HOT WATER makes it acidic but also steeping for a longer than 16 hours will make it bitter. I agree that 24 hours is optimal.

This recipe uses a 1::16 ratio so I guess it's not meant to be diluted in water. Most cold-brew recipes I read are to make a coffee concentrate that is meant to be diluted in water (usually half and half). After checking many cold-brew concentrate recipes, I've realized that there's isn't a consensus on the ratio - Jamie Oliver uses a 1:8 ratio, but other people use 1:6, 1:4 or even 1:3. I have a batch brewing in the fridge right now and I used a 1:8 ratio. I like my coffee not too strong so I'll probably water it down a lot

If you have a foodsaver vacuum sealer, and a mason jar attachment and hose, you can significantly cut your brewing time to 1-2 hours by brewing in the mason jars and vacuum sealing them. The vacuum helps extract the coffee faster without sacrificing flavor. You can always strain it after.

I have found that the best (and easiest) coffee to use is Costco's Kirkland 100% Colombian pre-ground coffee. We've taste-tested it against whole beans (dark roast) and Kirklands is the best. It's a bargain too at a 3 pound can for $9.99. $3.33/pound for coffee this good is a steal! I measure out 1 cup of Kirkland coffee and put it in a large Melitta drip coffee (the size that uses the #6 paper filters). I fill it to the top with cold tap water, give it a stir and let it sit for 24 hours. I make it early in the morning so that it will be ready the next day early in the morning. Using a large hand held filter, I, give the brew another stir and filter it through a #6 paper filter. Discard the grounds in the trash or use it for compost. This makes enough cold brew coffee to last us three days, storing the pre-brewed coffee in the refrigerator. We like to serve our cold brewed coffee hot! We measure our 2/3rd's of a cup in a cappuccino mug. We use the Bodum double walled Parvina cups. Place the mug in the microwave and heat it for 1 1/2 minutes. While the cold brew coffee is heating, we foam milk in our Nespresso Aeroccino. When the milk foam is ready, we add it to the microwaved coffee and sprinkle some cinnamon on top and enjoy the perfect cold brew hot cappuccino....ever. This sounds like a lot of steps and work but when you consider that you're making enough coffee to last three days and you're getting the best cappuccino you ever tasted, it's a great deal!!! Try it, you'll like it.

I completely agree with adding almond milk over cow milk. Almond milk is a nut, so it complements the coffee better. If you want it a little "thicker" like with heavy cream add a bit of arrowroot. Its flavorless and will give the almond milk a little body.

Good recipe as far as the ratio, measurements and equipment. Brewing on a countertop away from the sunlight or in a cupboard is my preferred method. But no matter which cold brew recipe I have followed over the years, I have discovered my own little tip early on. No matter what, to get the best and smoothest flavor, you have to double strain. After removing the nut milk bag, use a mesh strainer and line it with a paper coffee filter into your serving pitcher. It takes an annoying amount of time BUT your patience will be rewarded lol. The best tasting cold brew coffee ever. I never use sweetener or milk in mine because this tip makes delicious on its own. Cheers

"everything in moderation" was my grandmother's favorite thing to say 🙂 even when I would do stuff as a kid like get caught smoking weed this lady born in the 20s had the wisdom to tell me "anything in moderation is ok" at the height of the Regan war on drugs. It's a truly wise outlook because it actually takes more self discipline to do things in moderation than avoid them, and the added bonus of perspective about a thing is gained when you don't avoid it and instead experience it and understand it. R.I.P Gramma. When she had cancer and couldn't eat our state didn't have medical marijuana at the time and me and my brother got a vaporizer and she vaped cannabis with us for the first time in her 80s to get the munchies and settle her stomach.

btw if you guys wanna scale up or down im here to help.This recipe calls for 3.8L for 227g of beans. If you only wanna make 2L just go 2/3.8 and then multiply the answer to 227g. Voila

bud, I would encourage you to try roasting your own coffee, it is not that expensive (try going to sweet Marias website) I bought my hot air roaster for around a hundred and fifty usd, and the quality of fresh roast far surpasses anything bought at a local grocery I've found here. if you think hole bean makes a difference, wait till you try fresh roasted.

Some stores that offer bags you can fill yourself they typically will have a commercial grinder on site. May not work for everyone but it's another option if you want to skip buying a grinder. The bonus is you can mix multiple flavors and levels of roasts without buying more than one bag.

Best filter bags I have used were in brewing some coffee stout. We used the knee to toe portion of some L'eggs (Queen sized) to hold the ground coffee and 1/2 gallon mason jars to make the coffee in. And sanitize EVERYTHING with StarSan.

Just buy good quality Arabica variety coffee that has been well washed with clean water and well picked(only mature beans selected ) and you wont need to do cold brew coffee. Well selected beans and well washed coffee wont be bitter and they will have low acidity. Arabica= sweetest coffee type

The best way to make cold coffee is to make it the night before and put it in the fridge. Cold and ready to go the next morning. Tastes the same without all the hassle.

If you want a faster grinding process, take off the nut on the top of the grinder (which exposed the axle got the grinder) and just attach a drill. It's 10x faster

Thx for this! another good reason to go with whole beans is because often times unethical companies (which are many) are cheating your with ground coffee ...adding sawdust & whatever else they can find!
@SouloDoloMusic
@SouloDoloMusic 8 лет назад
But you CAN get the same consistency with a blade grinder or "spice mill" if you just pulse instead of holding down the button. Not downing your method, just letting people know. Another great video, man!
@tom-andrethomsen
@tom-andrethomsen 7 лет назад
Even very expensive burr grinders have issues with getting consistent grinds, so the blades are just not an option for anyone interested in good coffee. The blade grinders will also burn your coffee beans...
