How to make custom crab snares for best results. Through research, trial and error and talking to crab snaring gurus in Northern California where it is so popular. I found the best crab snare design. Proven to catch crabs. I even had a triple on one pull. As promised, my knowledge is to share so we all can be better fisherman.

Supplies: Most these can be found on Amazon or Ebay.
Wire cloth 1/2 " x 1 " x 16 gauge. Also can use 1/2 " x 1/2 " x 16G wire cloth.
Pet Lodge wire cage clips - 1lb
Loops:
Weed wacker string .065 in dia. found local hardware store
Amazon -
SF Monofilament Leader - Break Strength: 150LB/68.0kg,0.047in/1.19mm in Dia, Length:110yd/100m, Color: clear. My preferred mono line.
Wire Ferrules:
Shonan.systems Aluminum wire ferrules 1/16 " inch. Qty 200.
or sold by Jilukibo - 1/16" Aluminum Oval Crimping Loop Sleeve for 1/16 Inch Diameter Securing Wire Rope Clamp, Oval Compression Ferrules Cable Line End (150 Pack)
Bike inner-tube tires free from bike shops and jack chain link found in local hardware
Raw lead found on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace and or Fish and tackle shops
Tools: Used tool shops and store bought.

These are the best snares - because they are flatter than store bought you can cast them farther. Nice Vid!

Thanks Bro. Only thing I would add is mesh to keep bait longer in the cage especially shad and squid. Marinated Chicken wings is an alternative with own concoction.

Good videos! I have been making my own snares for a long time and watch everything I can about making them. I have borrowed several other people's methods over the years. Example would be, I use the twinkie bait cage I learned from Scorpion Tubes channel and the loops I learned from Joy of Livings loops. Now I see things I will use from your snares too. I do minor mods but they are all pretty much alike. I like your ideas of mounting the molds too. I even have a mold made from clay then fired.Thanks for the info and lessons!

@@BackFishing My wife and I went last Saturday and we caught 4 at the Ocean Beach. We got there early before 6 a.m. there were about 6 cars in the parking lot. By 10 the parking lot was full. Everybody was out there. Lol

Would you post some pictures and a little more detail on the lead mold? It looks like you use two 1/2” drywall pieces, how deep is the lead cavity? Great video and thank you!

Yes, that is correct. Simple drywall. It's 1/4 deep and 3" to 4" long tappered. This is the quickest way to mold the lead from 6 to 10 ounces.

I was looking over your materials list. Is 1/13 ferrule accurate? I can’t find them anywhere. Great tutorial. I want to make a few of these for a couple of friends and myself.

Shonan systems aluminum wire ferrules 1/13" is what I used but 1/8" diameter will do just as long as you can crimp both .065" monofilament/nylon line together. Good luck.

Thank you. I just used sheet rock I got free from homedepot. They were the spacers for the wallboard/sheetrock. Doubled it up and carved the desired shape of the weight held by sheet rock screws. Put the the cage on top and poured the lead weight.

@@deerphoria4314 Lead would burn the wood. You might get a few but I'm sure the wood will burn. The plaster board is pretty easy and would last at least a dozen.

I'd be interested in buying one or two from you. I live north of you on the Long Beach Peninsula. I think I read somewhere you live in Oregon? What part of Oregon? It's not something I'll do often so I don't really want to gear up to make one or two. And they don't sell a good quality crab snare in this area. Do your monofilament snares stand upright (vertical) when your snare (cage) is sitting on the bottom of the ocean or bays? All the snares they sell here locally at the retail stores, the mono snares just lay flat on the sand which seems inefficient to me. I know some people that catch crab with them...but I think a person might do better with verticle snares?

The loops stand upright and do not lay flat. The cages come in two styles with poured weight into the cage and none weighted. I didn't think to sell them but I might be interested. Please email me at Imbackfishing@gmail.com to make arrangements.

What material are you using for the mold for pouring the lead?

I actually poured my lead into plaster board/sheetrock spacers I got free from Home depot/Lowes. I just carved the shape I wanted. Good for about 10 casts of lead. I have not tried it but people cast bondo, clay, and silicone. The method I used was just the fastest way. GL

@@BackFishing it is what it is. I'll try again. I made a few cages today. Ordered the rest of the stuff from Amazon. I found a local supplier in Portland with a great price on lead. I'll cut a ton of cloth soon and I'll have a good backup supply.

You can go local hardware store. They usually have roll they sell by the foot. Try to find 1/2" x 1/2" and then duplicate the design . I find the crab can't get to the bait as easy. Good luck.
