How to Make a Sandman Cosplay Helmet. One of my bucket list builds is Dream's helmet from Neil Gaiman's The Sandman. This comic book series is absolutely fantastic and I am excited to see the live action version on Netflix. In this video I show the steps I took to paint and weather Sandman's helmet. If you would like to build one as well I have Free PDF templates available on my website. This helmet is a mix of several comic book references as well as the Netflix version. In part 1 I covered the fabrication of Dream's helmet and in part 2 I will go over all of the steps it takes to paint and weather the piece using acrylics.

WOW, what a great paint job - really gives that "this is an ancient tool used by an ageless entity" vibe that's required! Between the two videos, a REALLY thorough how to, and you're kind enough to provide free pdf files. I wouldn't cosplay Dream (I'm more suited to Despair) but I may build it as a showpiece as a gift for another The Sandman loving friend of mine.

@@p10091518 it’s pretty much just experience of knowing what color and the amount of water / pigment to add. You’ll pick it up the more you do it

This is the best build of the sandman helmet. I have seen! It is clear how the bones of the old gods are separate from the leather and metal and how they are all put together to make the helmet. The bone details are fantastic. One request, add a red led option.

I'm in the process of making one...about 90% done. Came out pretty good...but wow it's hard to replicate your paint job. That's the hardest part so far. I would be proud to walk around with the helmet unless your helmet was close by. Then I would hide mine. Thanks again for the template and tutoria.

Do you think it might be possible to use UV resin and one egg as a mold to do the eyes? You could then tint it any colour you wished.

Another good alternative to tint those lenses wouldn’t be “smoked vinyl wrap” it’s transparent black vinyl. And with a little heat it can stick to any shape. You can usually get a small roll of it for around $10 on eBay

My favourite part is how on the last episode you can see him building some nightmares. One of them looks like it has a huge hole on its face. I saw that as maybe a bit of how the creature whose skull makes his helm, you can imagine how you'd put your whole head in that gaping mouth and use the skull like a helmet with eyes in the back.

The helm is made up of two ancient gods. The skull of one and the spine of the other. I hope they tell that story n the series later on if it continues to get picked up

I totally vouch for not using high temp on the glue gun to set the chiffon. There are more gradual ways to build up a pain tolerance, that allow you to still use your finger tip days later. I learned that the hard way.

Dollar Tree offers silicone finger protectors that help a great deal - I found that I was forgetting if I was using low or hot temp glue :/

@@fthurman I went to buy a package of those a couple of weeks ago, and realized they were too small. So I bought a package if the silicone toenail cup things. I don't know what they're actually for, but they fit my sausage fingers!

Between a coat and a wash are you sealing with a quick top coat or something? Every time I try doing a wash I end up just lifting the layer under it. Also, beautiful build! Your painting details are just ::chef’s kiss::

I’ll use a hair dryer to dry quickly but I pretty much never use clear coats. They end up killing the sheen of the paints. The higher quality paints the less transfer you’ll have. If they are low pigment paints they will be removed easier. And thanks!

Of all the videos of yours that I have watched, this one is hands-down my favorite. The helmet looks abso-effing-lutely AMAZING, and you provided more useful tips than I would have thought possible in an 11 minute video. That super glue/baking soda trick will come in very handy this year, as we've got quite a few props in need of corrosion for this year's planned haunt. And as always the depth of color you achieved is mind-blowing. Your art skills are incredible, and I'm so glad you are wiling to share them with us all :-) (PS, thank you also for the "if you don't have Easter eggs" alternatives on this one.)

If someone would be interested in a costume of The Corinthian then... One of the sunglasses are Meller Kribi Amber Carbon. They used also Tigris version in some scenes, and there are probably at least two i could not identify.

Looks amazing! I think I'm a little confused about the plastidip - you said two light layers but then said you put the second coat down after the texture - did you do one light layer, add texture, then second light layer, or two layers, then texture, then one layer?

Correct 2 light layers for the first coating then another layer after the texture

You can get hold of the clear display domes with wooden bases all year round which could work for the eyes. Just make sure you get pastic not glass.

You could use that, might have to heat form them some the eggs already have a taper from the front to the back which worked well a straight dome wouldn't have that

@@SKSProps rather than using the dome from the top I was thinking about taking a slice at around 30 degrees from the top edge so you get some of the side in too. And you get 2 out of 1 dome.
