The Western World will die for this, while Africans are condemning their culture. What a shame!!. This is culture, and it is beautiful, stop accepting a culture that does not accept or recognize you.
Iam a Nigerian but was born in Togo i live in France since 21 years now … i really enjoyed this video because i did all these hairstyles before when i was in Nigerian especially the one called packing and my friends named me packing… At that time i didn’t know i’m going to miss sooo much those days today… when i was watching your video it was like hearing my friends calling me again packing packing. I love Nigerian Traditional Hairstyles period . Anyway thank you for sharing this video i love it thank.Hi to everyone over there in Nigeria i love you all . i miss my friends everyday and our golden days ❤❤❤
African styles like this are looked down upon by majority of Nigerians because it is seen backward and not 'modern'. One of the after effects of colonialism. Africans are leaving behind important knowledge about ourselves because we feel we must conform to a world that cares little about us n our culture.
Well, I care about Nigerian culture and African culture, and I'm black American. It's so good to see these intricate, spiritual and beautiful hairstyles. If only I could find someone to do my hair here like that. Nigerians shouldn't leave their culture for modern things. Maybe they could incorporate them. When I traveled to Africa for the first time, I thought that I was going to see all these traditional clothing and hairstyles. I saw weaves, relaxers, braids, some bleaching and lots of cheap ugly western clothing. African clothes and hairstyles are superior because there is time, care, beautiful colors, fractal patterns, history and culture behind it. I'm not just saying this for ego boost, but it's the truth.
He gonna like whatever hairstyles comes from underneath my head tie! That hairstyle is beautiful, and i would gladly wear it if it can be done a little less tightly.
I Agree! I loved this video. So sad the traditional styles aren't being worn. But I guess more women in the village wear it. The Sis in the market would make plenty money here in London. There was a GH Sis who had a hair shop in East London, she knew all the traditional styles and did good business.
Excellent. Most hairstyles aren't considered childish except one put bows or ribbons. You look good. Much better than fake weaves. So natural. Love it!
Oh, this type of hair dresser is what am Looking for, i live in Spain oh i wish this woman is here, she will make big money. Dear reporter you are wrong by saying girls like you nowadays don't plait that kind Hair, Who told you so? I am a girl like you, i am a Godly woman and i love these old hairstyle because they bring out the best in you not those fake and expensive hair you people run after and yet they damage the edges of your hair. Time the black women go back to their roo
Few months ago i went to nigeria and major part of the women had relaxed hair or really bad weaves/sew-ins (not everyone tho)... The thing that really annoyed me is that when i decided to go out with my hair out in an afro some people were telling me "no, you should get your hair done / it's not good if you go out with you hair like that/ it's not nice/it looks dirty" (some of these comments were also from a couple of family members -_-). I was wondering why is a problem for them if i leave my hair how it naturally grows from my scalp... Plus they cant even handle natural hair in the salon they wanted me to go.. I saw how they did my cousins hair, the outcome was great but it looked too tight to me.
The effects of colonialism. I like to call it: Colonialism Conditioning. We're talking centuries of self hate, texturism, and colorism. And though we're gradually learning to embrace our features, the hate is still alive and well.
I'm in America and I loved this video and your hairstyle. I stopped using the perm about 4 years ago. Its not easy to find someone that can do unique and natural styles. Because at one point it seemed that EVERYONE was doing the perm and weave styles. So please do more of these videos for the natural women in world
I wish i could do this. Its a very good way for growing hair . I only can make two braids and that is all. Nothing can beat the flexibility of black and curl hair. We should be thankful for it.
When we show our diversity we reflect the vastness of the Universe and it's Creator! Love the hair sis!😘 I wish the hair stylist could get her own shop!
Go to Kigali! We're still rocking and loving our natural styles! ;) - Maybe even Burundi, haven't been to Kenya in a while but last I was there, they also appreciated a more natural and refined look.
I remember girls in my state in Nigeria wearing hairstyles like this and with the rubber it brings back so many memories i even remember getting it done thank you battabox edit: I forgot to add I always thought it was very beautiful and i envyed my friends, even now I still think it's very beautiful and the lady was so beautiful
You look prettier after you had it done, look how bright and lovely your face stands out. I love these traditional hairstyles. If I had someone to braid for me, I'd wear traditional all the time....Caribbean
I used to see these beautiful, exotic hairstyles quite a lot years ago. I never realised how much pain they caused to create, though, and my scalp was aching in sympathy with the lovely Odun in this video.
This hairstyle is beautiful. It only needs to be modernize to the way we wear our hair now. I'm gonna order my supplies and learn how to do my own hair. Thank you! It's coming to the USA!
I like the traditional style. My mom made the thread styles for me here even in America when I was young and taught me how to make them for myself. Show more of this. I'd like to learn more.
I need my hair threaded too :o) This styles takes me back to my youth and the play ground taunts of spider head :o(. Women of today still acknowledge threading as a good way to grow / stretch the hair.
You look so gorgeous with this hair style, it's a shame none of our girls patronize this style anymore. I remember my mum back in days when she use to do this style
I loooove this hairstyle. It shows the beauty of a Nigerian woman. Women who braid, fix weavon and the likes use them cos they are not confident about themselves. They feel insecure that's why they braid and the like. I'm a naturalists and I do appreciate styles like yours.
Aaawww Odun, this just takes me back to when I was in Primary school. My mum used to ko(thread..lol) our hair every Sunday in preparation for school on Monday. We used to complain then but in retrospect,it was so nice. I have natural hair now and not really a fan of weaves and all that.At the end of the day, it is better to satisfy and free yourself from the need to conform to what others are doing. I carry my hair in braids, wigs sometimes, normal packing and I honestly dont see myself sitting to fix any weave again. That heat and wahala is too much abeg.
This is so wonderful thank you so much for posting.I want to know is there a way to gather all these precious mothers and make a kind of natural hair style show in order to let them know to the public?Just a suggestion.Be blessed.
I like the style. I think it's cute. I hate that we feel styles like this on short natural hair make us look immature or it's only for elementary school girls. But, Brazilian hair makes us look mature and desirable. Okay.
Word. why is that people think it's ok for young black girls to rock the beautiful God given hair, but once they reach a certain age it's not ok anymore...as if relaxers and weaves are passports to womanhood and femininity...how?...according to who's definition?
@@proverbalizer I feel so ashamed that wearing someone else's hair is what we think is pretty. Most people who wear wigs look strange ....... Either the hairline is weird, or the hair just looks long and unnatural and greasy. And yet we are stuck in that mindset. I hope for healing for our minds and psyche. We need a change. This European way has never worked for us, is not working for us and cannot ever work for us. Adapting the customs of cold icy nations to a hot climate. It's ridiculous. We have Europeans copying us and here we are abandoning what is our so that Europeans can pick it up and call it theirs.... When we accept ourselves, maybe our lives will get collectively better. We are suffering in almost every area of living.
I love to see traditional natural hair styles I have 3 daughters so it's very important that they learn about choices not to follow the crowds thankyou for sharing
I wear wigs every now and again but moreso my hair in twists. It’s the inner beauty that radiates and shines through no matter what your hair looks like. Great segment
he is right, im from the Caribbean i notice that through out continent our people refer to everything that is ours as traditional like what the hell? why are we trying to be like europeans, all we need are infractures and nothing else @@PamelaTaylor
I love your video. And I love traditional hairstyles. The charge too much here in the states so, I get it done every once in a while (like once every OTHER year).
what I truly enjoyed about this video is seeing the very beautiful and well informed Odunayo getting her hair made up. She is already beautiful without the hairdo. But the style she chose really accented and augmented her very lovely face and we got a good look at her gorgeous dark eyes. Ms Oti, did you give any further consideration about the Blacksmiths of Nigeria? It is something personal and of keen interest to me... I am a self-taught knifemaker/blacksmith and is why I inquired about it through correspondences, including email. I hope you are well and in good spirits. Peace be with you always... LOOOOOOOOVE IT! I only wish you went into more detail about each look and how they did it on other people - tutorial, maybe. Please, do one on traditional attire for men and women (in detail - when and where it is worn traditionally- Yoruba especially, but Igbo and Hausa, too). I am sure many of us abroad are interested. I, myself, learn a lot. Thanks and much love.
Greetings from the UK ... I loved how this style looked it brought out your beauty. I have natural hair and struggle to have anyone else to put their hands in my head as I am extremely tender headed. I am inspired by the plaited style featured while you was talking with the man in the hat towards the end of the video though.
Omg so beautiful *-* It last two weeks which is good cause that when my head starts really itching, Lol used to get sew ins I tried to make them last three weeks but it never went that way in the past which is why I started wearing wigs. When I do box braids those don’t even last 3 weeks before I’m dying to take them Down. She looks so lovely 😊 how do they braid that way it’s soooo interesting.
The one in the discussion called "Everybody Hates Judy" is so closed minded. I think she was trying to say she likes your hair, but has a backhanded way of saying so by running down the people who don't like it in Nigeria. I found it odd that this simple but very painful looking hairstyle actually brought out your natural beauty and made you even more stunning to look at. I love your videos. I love your presentation and how you take the time to research the topics you are discussing in the film. I am fascinated with this new approach to African cultures, customs and heritage. It speaks volumes. Although many nations are widely influenced by western ideals and western customs, many of the people are still holding tight to their national identity, their tribal and cultural heritage and customs. But at the same time, you are all embracing new ideas, new customs and new ways of life, and are incorporating them into your lives and making it a part of your culture, your customs. This fosters and creates new traditions that fosters, bolsters and enhances old heritage, thus enriching your lives. I must admit Ms Odunayo, I am drawn and attracted to you for many, many reasons. I love your presentations... I love and enjoy how you are getting into the heart of traditional customs, heritage and cultures. I love how you are so knowledgeable with your presentations... and I find you very attractive and an exotic beauty because we don't have much like you and your culture here. I am a happily married man and will continue to be a happily married man. But to deny a feeling of attraction for a woman is to deny myself as a man. Such feelings for someone of the opposite sex is normal and I am pleased to be a normal man and so therefore, a normal human being. And besides, the odds of ever meeting you are virtually nonexistent. But I can and do, still enjoy your videos and enjoy seeing and listening to you bring your different heritages and customs to the world as you do in your very own unique style. To that end, I am blessed with a wonderful wife who accepts me as I am. She feels no jealousy because I talk to and communicate with other women. She trusts me and I trust her. It is the key to our success as a husband and wife. I am also very pleased to see such rich, old and powerful heritage, customs and culture still thriving in Africa despite so many drastic changes. Thank you Ms Odunayo for your films. I will keep watching for a little while longer. My first name is James and I live in Anchorage Alaska.
You look stunning and elegant with this hairstyle if men like it thats great if not when did we give them permission to choose our hairstyles. The hairdresser is so talented it is a shame she does not have her own shop. Nice video.
