A next level painting tip on the lava -- mix a little silver or bluish gun metal in with the black. Freshly hardened lava has a bit of a glassy sheen to it.
@Raycheetah
@Raycheetah 3 года назад
Exactly. It's a kind of silica glaze that forms on the surface of the lava, and sometimes even cracks and peels off when it cools, with a sort of chiming sound. Also, lava comes in two basic forms: A'a, the rough, broken up kind (very hard to walk on!) and Pahoe'hoe, which forms interesting ripples and waves as it spreads, which would make an interesting crafting challenge to create some striking terrain effects! I'm thinking about some dungeon terrain based on lava tubes and their peculiar geology, as well. =^[.]^=

An alternative method I recommend for doing the lava colors, start with reds - darker to lighter- then do oranges and finish with yellows. The idea being building your lava look from bottom paint layer to top.

You might want to consider shifting how to do the handle part, insert it from the underside and use it to add more reinforcement for the structure as you continue. Less of a potential issue due to it being cardboard for the structure. Possibly adding crushed scrap paper or newspaper to make it slightly more sturdy when you apply the sculptamold because that does add water to the mix and a more sturdy base for it helps...might also want to try giving it a dusting from a primer before the sculptamold if you're in a wetter area, it would help prevent potential issues with mold on the interior that could ruin the entire piece.

SUPERB work! Same technique reminds me of when I would have to apply a wash to my skeletons decades ago or dry brush weapon and chainmail metal. That black paint around the outer edges makes ALL the difference /thumbs up!

If you wait about 10 minutes after applying sculptamold, you can go back with a little water and make it totally smooth just by using your fingers. I use it in all my dioramas.

Quick tip about open lava pools like that, they usually don't smoke that much, so the infinite height for line of sight wouldn't necessarily be appliccable. The smoky kind of eruptions, like subglacial or phreatic eruptions usually don't have that much flowing lava.

As an extra painting tip, the striated ridges on the surface of lava are the coolest part. To replicate that, you can drybrush the next shade darker onto each place in the gradient, so light drybrush of orange over yellow, light of red over the orange, and then, of course, the glossy black onto the red.

Awesome build, thanks for all you do to contribute to the hobby. I always look forward to your videos. 😁 As others have suggested you can try making your own, or if you don't want to, and want to support another Crafter in the RU-vid family, Luke's APS does produce some commercially and has shops that have his products located in the USA and I believe Australia, and for sure in the UK where he is based. I know you all are always trying to help one another out which is one of the things I really love about this community....it actually feels like a community of interconnected people. 😉 Thanks again for sharing with is and all your awesome ideas! Ok so let me try again lol. _"Here is my experience"_ : This stuff was REALLY easy to work with but what I found was the Sculptamold can puff a little as you're scooping it up, putting it in the cap and mixing it so I would advise wearing a mask just until you got it properly mixed. Rubber gloves are great too as you can still feel the texture. It's a bit like porridge. I can confirm that the 2 parts SM and 1 part water is SPOT ON! It was PERFECT consistency the first mixing but on the second mixing I got a bit over confident and went 4 parts SM and 2 parts water. As Wyloch said it does start to harden a bit after about 5 mins so stick to his recommended amount (small batches). I was using a wooden party spoon to spread it around initially but just ended up using my fingers (it was easier for me to sculpt) and it gave it a more bulbous texture. You may find edges which have a thorny edge as you lift your tool or fingers off the mold. You can easily pat it down lightly or even after about 10 - 15 minutes if you dab a little water on your finger. It smooths out REALLY well. I don't know what kind brushes were used in this video but I just bought some bog standard kiddy craft brushes. As I was painting the black acrylic onto the model I notices some tiny boulders would come off but I might have been painting too aggressively. I later dabbed a drop of water to each squeeze of the acrylic paint and mixed it and it made it go SOO much further. Tomorrow I shall ad the greys. Hope I don't mess it up /fingers crossed Here is a link to the progress so far: imgur.com/gallery/first-amaco-sculptamold-sculpt-1-mHlbg7K

For the technique you used for the volcano, you might consider filling in much of that space with crumpled balls of paper. It gives you a nice gross texture. And instead of PVA and paper towel, you might want to try paper and hydrocal. Model railroaders call this "hard shell terrain", and it's easy, quick, light, and durable as a base to do your final surface texturing. Works for more lush terrain as well.

Although the texture in this video is PERFECT for my current woodworking project, can anyone give me tips on creating a carved stone texture rather than the randomized jagged ones in this video.
