For us folks who do not have the excellent Walleye in their part of the world to fish for but do have trout, this type of crawler harness rigging is just as effective when trolling for trout in lakes as it is for the Walleye. My Dad and Granddad moved out west from North Dakota/Minnesota and as a young'n I raided their tackle boxes when looking to up my game for trolling for trout in the mountain lakes out west here. I found that their midwestern Walleye trolling techniques and rigging worked a treat for the trout that I have to fish for in my area. This rig works for landlocked Striped Bass in one of the lakes nearby me as well. I miss fishing for Walleye as a kid on our vacations to visit our midwestern family. What a magnificent fish to have in your waters.

One thing I found shore fishing here in Hawaii, if you go through the eye of the hook from front to back (opposite what you do) when you tighten the knot it makes the hook curve inwards and circle hooks hook better that way. They snag anything that bent point touches. Great tutorial

I was trolling through loads of you tube videos on how to catch Zander in the UK a very close cousin of Walleye. This has given me soething to try in a week or so. Thank you for the tip.

Here is my concern. You put the blade on after only two beads. When you held it up, the blade was about halfway down the shaft of the top hook. Wouldn't that interfere with the action of the blade? It looks like that would hit the nightcrawler. Just wondering. I put mine on after the 4th bead.
@duanewesley5718
@duanewesley5718 4 года назад
Pike Evans I noticed that too. Yes it will interfere with a hook set for sure.
@Hawaiibohntr

@@duanewesley5718 Did allot of walleye fishin in North Dakota last year with my son in law, even the commerical 2 hook rigs only had 2-3 small beads the trailing hook gets most of the hook ups. with the single hook rig there are 3-5 beads then the blade, never had a issue either they were biting or they weren't. or make it with more beads between the hook and blade, up to you.
@Lefishn
@Lefishn Год назад
Yes as a professional tournament angker for Walleye you want enough beads that your blade doesn't touch the eye at rest. If it does or even worse cover some of the hook you will lose more fish from not enough hook exposes. For #4 Colorado I fun 5 beads, #5 run 6 beads and #6 run 7 beads below the blade

I would like to see a specification build chart, showing BEAD SIZE PER BLADE SIZE. Builders cannot seem to even agree on how many beads per harness. Some say NEVER Put a bead ahead of the clevis, and some say YES do it, to prevent a bit of debris or weed jambing into the frontal area of clevis. Nay sayers say, a bead will keep clevis with blad from spinning well. Ok, then Make a Teflon bead, lol. I'm not buying it. I know one guy who quit using them for Walleye, now uses a 36 inch leader, a bright color single bead against slow death hook eye, and thats it , off a bottom bouncer. Once in awhile will use a teeny willow leaf single blade on that single bead.

Young people these days could learn a lot from us older guys- trying to listen to most of them explain the same thing is like taking an exam without having any questions. Needless to say, I don't generally answer correctly or accomplish much that way. I think that most of the important things in life are relatively simple, but it takes the right person to be able to communicate that to others. After watching this, I'm absolutely confident I can accomplish the task with relative ease. Thank You.

I was under the impression that beads above the clevis would keep the blade from turning freely at slow trolling speeds. I am starting to walleye fish, 50degree water 1.3 to1.7 mph. Caught 13 with 3 fishing. Will blades work slower?

Doesn't the Walleye just bite through the line (since you don't have a leader)?
@dennisedwards8954
@dennisedwards8954 3 года назад
By my experience, yes. Sometimes the fish do/es sever the line, especially when it's a "slime-dart (pickerel). I've tied harnesses using differing 'pound test'. Line does abrade with use so, I expect losses. Giving up terminal tackle to Neptune is part of the adventure. Cha-CHING!

Why do you use such heavy line?
@ignantmike4635
@ignantmike4635 6 лет назад
he did say use 20lb....but, he used 50lb...I think so you can see it
@struckus
@struckus 4 года назад
anything biting a spinner is going to be a reaction bite..it's not a finesse style so thicker line doesn't matter and helps break offs and snags etc..

Will braid work?
@Lefishn
@Lefishn Год назад
Don't use braid for harnesses or you will get knots and tangles right away. Stay with 12-20# depending on what species you fish and if clearer water use Florocarbon. Some of the best line is Sunline cause they have best # test to diameter. That's what all us Professional tournament Walleye anglers use

I would advise that this rig is illegal in Ohio, on the Maumee River. Two things, 1. hooks must be no more than 1/2 inch the length of the shank. 2. Single hook only.
@Lefishn

That line is way way too thick and kinky. Looks like 20-30# cheap cheap line
