After a suggestion from one of my subscribers suggested using pictures of lumber loads and thus creating model loads in that manner. In this video I will describe how I went about creating these loads.
As mentioned in the video below are the references that I used to help make this video:

In the July 2011 issue of the Model Railraod Hobbyist there is an article by Steve Pirosko on how he made loads for center beam flatcars. This article provides pre-made sheets from several lumber companies for HO, N & Z scales. I mentioned there might be one for O scale as well but that is incorrect. Here is the link where you can download copies of this magazine (including this issue which is in the back issues section).

I used foam core board to do mine, plus added black thread to tie downs.

That sounds like a another great way to do them. The thread would look good as the tie downs. Thanks for sharing!

I forgot to tell you that the flatcar I got with the realistic lumber load was indeed the same car in your video. A blue Rock Island 60ft flatcar. What a coincidence !

Yes it is! I was at a hobby shop and the owner had a batch of pre-owned ones that he was selling for a good price so I snatched them up.

@@krazytrainguy Oh awesome that was quite a treasure to find.

The only realistic lumber load I got is from a flatcar I bought at the hobby shop. I liberated it from the bargain bin. The plastic loads from Walthers still look good enough but that one from the bargain bin is very nice.

Nice! I always like finding items that look good an don't break the bank.

@@krazytrainguy Yes , sometimes they are more interesting than the brand new expensive cars and are usually rare out of production cars that are hard to find.

Something I have been experimenting with is using neodymium magnets in the bottom of my loads that go onto flat cars. They are strong enough to hold the load securely when using a light material like foam.

Thanks for sharing your experiences loading and unloading these cars. When your switching a model you really don't think about everything that goes into the loading and unloading process. Also thanks for watching.

No load tie downs?
@krazytrainguy
@krazytrainguy 2 года назад
You could do the tie downs. I went the easier route with the tie downs in the picture of the load.
