+StarleePie47 actually, it is a short cut for Fan Animation (often, Fanime is called Fanimation also) since alot of projects which are seen as "Fanimes" are not inspired by Animes and are completely original! They even tend to have a non anime - and more realistic based style. ^_^
Can we possibly get some tutorials on how to design anime-like weapons? Not like final fantasty shit, but like how some of the more recent animes like Kabaneri had those really wicked air rifles and such. I'd imagine you might have an example of how to make weapons based on settings and such.
I know this was a long time ago, but can you do more parts to this series? You mentioned both the actual animation as well as character design, and I'd love to see both of those. If you can't I understand, I'd just love to see them!
I love how energetic your voice is. Also, this helped a lot confirm my idea that YOU CAN make anime in after effects. I think the best "anime" to do in after effects is Web Comic Style. They did this in the anime, "Way of the House Husband" from netflix originals. Also, watching this in 2022.

My only problem with this are the background mountains. The objects farther away from you move lesser, while the one's closer to you move more. Other than that, it looks good!
anybody know where to download some good anime sounds for free (sounds like different types of walking, running, fighting, sword fighting, getting hit in critical areas so the hit sounds painful and strong, explosions that sound like dragon ball explosions, ground shaking from our character releasing his power) those sounds
Pretty good for a fake. A lot of fan or student-made anime does have the problem of looking too digital, but as you said, observing is key. Nevertheless I think a lot of people can see the difference between a shot from anime and one they made by trying to copy it but not be able to specifically point out what it is. Effects like bloom, diffusion, line style, and shading can be too subtle to some people. I'm also kind of amazed you do this in Photoshop to start with, though it makes sense because it mimics the original way of animating, it just sounds painful, though, so I appreciate every "cell" you make.
You ever try toon boom harmony for animating? Its an animation focused program that still lets you use naturalistic bitmap style brushes. Photoshop is not the most intuitive thing for animation, it seems like other artists I know that use it end up wasting a lot time working around it.
It's a nice program but I don't think he needs to drop $1500 for it there is a $300 program from Toonboom that would do most of what he wants. Plus, harmony has a steep learning curve for its more advanced features.
+Shannon Beech Yeah. I guess they saw that people will actually stop pirating and pay you if you ask a reasonable amount after seeing adobe do it. I haven't had to provide any proof since I first started it and a semesters worth of time has passed. I honestly can't remember if they were very rigorous in checking I'm pretty sure it let me get the lower price immediately.
+CozyBanx Sweet, I only got mine because my school had a special deal with Toonboom. Now that I think about it, it was a great deal. I ended up getting a full version of Harmony with a perpetual license for $500. They changed it the following year, I guess it was too good a deal, LOL.

You mentioned "diffusion," and I've used this term to describe the smoothing textured film look anime utilizes but I've only ever heard it from the show Shirobako--and I was wondering where you heard the term? I'm trying to figure out where this term was coined in the anime industry, or if they call it anything else during compositing.

That would be right, most television animation in both Japan and the USA animate on twos and some threes (much less so in US animation). Since 24 frames equals 1 second of animation on average there will 8-12 drawings in 1 second of animation.
in stuff like the monogatari series with the more surreal background style is compositing different. I know you mentioned how shaft's stuff is more "flat" what does that mean exactly?
Is all of the animation done in Photoshop? I knew there was an animation feature, but never learned to use it. I've been trying for a long time to use Anime Studio, but making the characters is too friggin' hard that way (using only vectors, which I suck at) I'd like to try making my animations in Photoshop now, but, like I said, I never learned about the animation feature. It would be cool if you could give a quick run-down of that (you know, the basics and how to make frames, and if it includes "onion skin" layers)
There's no specific technique, I just draw the frames on different layers. There's no onion skin either, I just lower the opacity manually on the previous frame
What kind of software do you user compositing a shot? I have Clip Studio Paint, and Krita. I tried using Krita, but it meeds some kind of MPEG plug in that I just can't get to work right. Clip Studio Paint can render the animation into an MPEG, but do you uses another program to render it into an MPEG? Also, how does compositing work? Does Clip Studio Paint have a plug in for compositing line work? I usually ink my animation, rather than scan the pencil drawings into my computer.
This makes me wish so bad that I had stuff like Photoshop and After Effects but I can only get free programs like GIMP and Windows Movie Maker. :( I would steal it but I've been getting guilt lately and want to actually pay for my stuff now. Well, I guess it would help if I learned to save money but whatever. Great video btw! :)

It is, not to the extent in the example, but there’s always some natural weight differences to the lines, because they were hand drawn. It applies to modern anime as well, it might not be obvious at a glance but you’d notice how much stiffer it looks if the lines were uniform
