"Betty" is a cutting-edge machine able to keep human livers alive outside the body for up to five days. Dr. Quin discusses reprogramming donor organs using RNA medicine to address liver diseases and the potential for transforming organ transplantation. Dr. Quin Wills emphasizes the urgency of addressing chronic diseases of aging, proposes a new approach to drug development using AI and human models, and envisions a future where organs are preserved and therapies are rapidly tested, offering hope for millions of lives.
Dr. Quin has a background as an MD, and additional degrees in genetics, mathematics, and computational biology. Holding doctorates from prestigious institutions like Oxford and Cambridge Universities, the South African Dr. notably founded his first liver drug genomics company 15 years ago. By combining his medical expertise with computational biology, Dr. Quin’s company paved the way for groundbreaking discoveries in liver research and therapeutics. The insights gained from their work not only advanced the understanding of liver diseases but also laid the foundation for more effective, personalized, targeted treatments and improved patient outcomes. At the moment, Dr. Quin Wills is the co-founder and CSO of Ochre Bio.
He is aware for inclusivity and equitable healthcare for all individuals, namely LGBTQ+ communities, who face unique health challenges and disparities which can be exacerbated by the lack of representation and understanding within the biopharmaceutical industry. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I thought it was going to tell us how to make our livers better

That was a long run on sentence. So I'll contribute to the answers for the title of this video. I'm taking into consideration that there are no genetic underlying health conditions given at birth with my suggestions. Eat healthy, drink clean safe water, exercise, avoid human processed foods, moderate sun exposure and choosing your social environement to have and keep a healthy psychological mind. Feel free to add to my comment if I missed any other beneficial factors to extend human life. Prevention and care.

I'm still puzzled at why people want to extend their lives. Do they have a fear of death? Of being apart from loved ones? What is it about the physical plane that has them clinging to it as long as possible? These are the things I wonder...

@@MeRia035 All depends how much you and others appreciate your existence and any goals or plans you want to acheive I suppose. I would imagine at old age most people wake up each day realising that they are still alive.

the title is a bit clickbait-y but the content of the video was very interesting. the way this method allows quick mapping of organs and iterating on treatments sounds revolutionary

What? Are they just saying put the organs in a machine? Is this organ donation propaganda? Jeez not what I expected

I'm appalled at the description information about this topic, what specific and unique Healthcare differences are their for the LBGTQ community vs traditional community of people, both face the same Healthcare issues the same, it's all about choices, and consequences of those choices

I'm not exactly sure why they are making a differentiation regarding healthcare, but trans persons have multiple complex surgeries. The M.E. likely isn't sure of long-term effects & outcomes. Except for the testing done on poor animals- which is not only futile & unethical, it is perversely barbaric. Those behind it are only seeking profit. Follow the money.
