take those oats they didnt like ,. soak them in water, place in the old bags to drain , rinse repeat for a few days until they begin to spout .. then feed that back to the birds .. they usually love it . Also , I found soaking all the dry scratch feed for 3 days to ferment a little, will cut how much you need to feed them in half.
@onceuponatinyfarm

Yes I have definitely noticed they like it better when I’ve fermented their feed for 2-3 days, thanks for watching

Feeding sprouted black oil sunflower seeds is a huge cost savings, they love them, and sprouting them actually raises the protein content a bit.

We are starting the same thing only starting with chickens first. Baby chicks and eggs at the market. Then point of Lay chickens and breeder pairs. Then micro-greens and various produce, tomatoes, squash and lettuce etc. Thank you for the ideas. My chickens lay the hardest egg shelled eggs I ever seen. Bight yellow yolks some a little darker. No chicken lays the same color egg. Plus hatching them out.

How exciting, good luck! Chickens are so much fun if we had enough space I’d have hundreds of them!

Small chickens can eat whole corn which is more nutritious. Just a thought for the next mix.

Where did you find bulk peas and other stuff? How does the price compare to store bought feed?
@onceuponatinyfarm
@onceuponatinyfarm 2 года назад
I think I ended up getting green split peas from the webstaurantstore.com but there are other places to find them too. I think it’s definitely spending a bit more on my part than store bought feed but everything in the feed store has soy in it and I wanted a soy free feed. I’m considering buying pre bagged soy free feed from New Country Organics just to make my life easier in the future. True leaf market is another place I’ve been sourcing some grains from lately, a little pricey but they have good stuff.

I've been searching everywhere for a decently priced bulk products, even Tractor Supply and IFA. Black Oil Sunflower Seeds - $44 for 50 lbs, Cracked Corn - $17 for 50 lbs, Oats - $29 for 50 lbs. With those 3 alone, its not worth it to do flax seed, white millet or split peas. With the prices I found, DIY feed is just too expensive. A 50 lb bag of regular chicken feed with a decent protein percentage and all other promised nutrients is $27 for 50lbs. Is there another location? I'm located along the Wasatch.

I’m using Azure Standard now for sourcing all my grains for the chickens…they’re all certified organic and pretty good prices.

Hi thanks for sharing this recipe!! Can you feed it to baby chicks? And if not do you have any recommendations for none soy 😃
@onceuponatinyfarm
@onceuponatinyfarm 3 года назад
I’m sure if you have a good blender and could grind up this feed you could feed it to your baby chicks. In fact, now that you mention it, I might try that myself because it’s very hard to find soy free feed! They never have any at Tractor Supply. Thanks for watching!

Beautiful but do they really digest it thoroughly or do they poop half of it as is
@onceuponatinyfarm
@onceuponatinyfarm Год назад
They must fully digest them because you don’t really see anything in their manure, their bodies are amazing what they can do especially with how they produce so many eggs!

Is this way of feeding a full balanced diet or more so like a scratch feed? Asking as I am wanting to make my own as well but want to know if its a full balanced or more so a scratch
@onceuponatinyfarm
@onceuponatinyfarm 2 года назад
I would say this is a complete feed, you could supplement with a scratch feed from the store but I try not to complicate things, as long as the birds get enough protein they’ll be fine. These whole grain ingredients give more nutrition to the chickens too.
@backstagebullyz3235
@backstagebullyz3235 2 года назад
Thankyou That is exactly what I was hoping you would say. As this way of feeding is more nutrient dence I feel that some or most feeds from the store. This helped me decide to transfer over to making my own feed now.

@@backstagebullyz3235 Yes I think your birds will be happy using this. Also, I would recommend sourcing whole green peas instead of the split peas I used… my chickens didn’t seem to like the split peas for some reason.
