Omg!! I looked away for half a second and Morph had become Arnold Schwarzenegger. Wtf?! This is next level modelling, why doesn’t this have more views?!
This is insane, I thought I was going to get a cute little “this is how to paint the plastic mini you bought!” This is way above my skill level but SO impressive.
Have you tried it yet?? I was AMAZED at how well his tips worked. Like, don't get me wrong, my first attempt doesn't look anything like his level, but it looks WAY better than I'd ever hoped for on my first try, all thanks to these tutorials! So cool that MMM is so willing to share his art!
I was just invited to my first in-person D&D game (I'm a relatively new player, and every time I've played so far has been online with my husband and his friends) and I've been having the worst time finding a miniature for my new character (a half-orc warrior bard). The thought of sculpting my own hadn't even crossed my mind, but this video has given me a lot of confidence that I can do it, or at least give it a good try. Thank you so much, and I'm super excited to go watch the rest of your sculpting videos!
I just finished my half orc cleric and it was SO satisfying!!! Just fyi though, HeroForge is a great option for buying custom minis, I have a Halfling bard that's just too tiny to sculpt for my current skill set, so I built her with HeroForge. But sculpting is way more fun!!!
What kind of bard are they? Civilised/savage? Musician/orator? The trend in D&D is for half orcs to be depicted as less bestial and more human proportioned, over time, so you may get away with a simple head swap. Or try a historical barbarian hornblower, with custom skin tone. There's also the Citadel Lord of the Rings range, with multiple factions of orc, in metal or easy to cut plastic, that could be a source of heads, or use one of their leader types, 'inspiring' their troops.
@@sasserine @sasserine he's very much a folk historian and collector of stories, so very much in line with the more modern D&D take on Orcs :). For his mini I actually ended up using one of Nolzur's female orc figures since their faces were way less brutish, and sculpted a new outfit over the top which also made the figure actually appear masculine. If I'm making another orc or half orc mini in the future, I'll absolutely check those ones out, thank you!
bro you are INSANE!!! I expected something that would be simpler but you just went out and made a full on mini in like 6 minutes! Thats just impressive! i cant wait to try it out
Two months ago: *Puts "How to sculpt D&D minis" into search bar, gets Warhammer Kitbashing tutorials* Today: *Video appears in recommended feed* About time, now I can use these tricks to sculpt my Kobold Army
A tip for proportions: often you'll need special sizes and lengths of limbs and body parts that won't work with what was stated here. I heartily recommend cutting a longer piece than what you think you'll need - then draw your character on a piece of paper flat with no perspective and model your wire as if it was their skeleton.
I just finished my first attempt! I chose an easy character (bulky, covered in furs) so it was a pretty basic design, but I'm so happy with the results, especially since it was my first try! Thank you so much for your amazing instructions and tips!!!
You have so much talent and in-depth knowledge. I'm 70 years old and feel that now I have been schooled by a master! I would love to have a figurine (or two, 1/28th scale for dioramas) of Conrad B Hart from the original Flashback PC game. but the graphics were so primitive then that accurate reference is practically impossible, and pirating figures from other similar characters seems the only option, except for experts like yourself. Thank you so much for sharing your God-given talent.
Thank you so much! Unfortunately I’m currently not taking commissions, if you want you can check out my Instagram and I’ll post something there whenever I’ll be taking commissions again.
@@magicmissileminis9723 Thank you sir. Is Instagram what you use to send someone bad news, like a telegram? I'm 70 remember :) You're probably far too young to know about telegrams; before the IT age, telegrams could be sent at a heavy price, so every word had to be absolutely necessary. A guy won the lotto, so he sent his boss this telegram: "Fuck you. STOP. Rude letter follows. End"
Oh I’m sorry, Instagram is a social media platform, similar to Facebook, but is often used by artists as a way to show people their art. I often post there with some side projects that I work on there
Thank you for making this!! I've discovered that good leonin minis don't really exist as far as I can find (and the few I've found really don't work for my character), and HeroForge doesn't have a good lion-like face, so I may be resorting to sculpting my own for my character (leonin barbarian, which sounds like the existing minis should work except his character flavor is that he's essentially an old polite grandpa with a cane doubling as a club who's decided that adventuring sounds like a fun retirement plan). I've been really intimidated by the idea of sculpting at such a small scale, but this is a really good video demonstrating how it works!
4 years later this video still the bestest tutorial for sculpting my own minis. Sadly I have no access to green stuff so I gotta work with cold porcelain or that epoxy used to do plumbing repairs. Works kinda fine for large non-humanoid shapes.
I've been wanting to learn how to sculpt minis, made my first try today and I felt like I don't know what the hell I was doing. This video has great pointers, thank you for the info, now I think I know were to focus on my next try. Consider me subscribed. BTW, your sculpting is jaw dropping. How long have you been doing this?
I’m glad that this was helpful! I’ve been doing this for about 2 or 3 years, the best thing about miniature sculpting is that every mini is a learning experience. I often feel like every mini that I make is better than the last.
The best thing about sculpting for fantasy and science fiction gaming, is that your training sculpts aren't failures, they're 'mutants' and 'lab subjects'.
thanks man, i had a hard time sleeping realizing i could make a diorama out of my minis haha but after searching for simple monster minis and some zombie sets turned out to be pricier than i thought. kinda felt down but after seeing this, i guess i can sculpt a few dozen zombies hehe
I love miniatures, I love marking them to bring my new oc’s and characters to life, I feel like you can do a lot more with miniatures, a lot faster because they are smaller, and you can make what ever you want!
Very beautiful work. I got a 3d printer to attempt to make my own minis but the cheap $100 printer I got leave a lot to be desired when it comes to making tiny prints.
You can wet surfaces you don't want to stick to green stuff. Also oil and Vaseline works apparently. Though I have not tried it. But good video, thanks 👍🏼
For a better quality (and less sticky) sculpting material, add a mix of green stuff (kneadatite) and milliput. Green stuff is rubbery soft when it sets and doesn't take to sanding/carving well, whereas milliput does as it tends to dry more firm, but it's brittle. The combination of both cancels out the weaknesses of both and leaving the best qualities of the two. Also, if you're looking for inexpensive thin wire, try florist/floral wire. Probably what was used in the video.
Great video, you definitely deserve more subs. Have you tried Aves Apoxie sculpt yet? It's similar to GS in that they're both Epoxy clay but I find that Apoxie sculpt has almost completely replaced GS for me.
Interesting I have not. I actually just restocked my supply of green stuff so I can’t say I’ll be trying it anytime soon 😂. I am planning on trying out some milliput in the future though. What would you say is the difference between the two?
@@magicmissileminis9723 If you have any questions about using it feel free to message me on here or IG (deviant_spark on IG) as Apoxie Sculpt has been my primary clay of choice for a while now. I'd definitely be excited to see what you can do with it.
Little tip when doing the wires use a hand drill to straighten the wire and soften it at first and the use it to twist the first part if done right then the twists will be as perfect as the can just go slow
How did it go from okay i follow i can totally do that to Holy heck look how great and detailed that looks in like 5 seconds. xD the jump from human like form to highly detailed and recognizable was so quick
This video is amazing. You made it look incredibly "easy" but I'm going to flat out tell you that I'm "afraid" to even make an attempt. This is the first sculpting video I've ever seen. I just subscribed to your channel. I know this is a tutorial video & the purpose of this video is teach people how to DIY however... do you take commissions? 🤞🏾
Thank you so much! Its definitely Intimidating sculpting your first mini. I do take commissions, you can DM me on Instagram and we can sort out details there!
@@magicmissileminis9723 perfect! I already sought you out & followed you on there about an hour ago. I’m completely new to D&D. “Discovered” it about 3 months ago & have been studying the PHB @ DMG ever since... 3 month! Haven’t played a single game yet. All of my friends whom I’ve tried to “indoctrinate” have all been scared off by the thickness of the PHB but I’m happy to say I’m about to have my first session zero this coming Tuesday.
Cool video. I took a class a few years ago and I want to actually get into it now. I just need to find my sculpting tools. I'm thinking I might start with some larger pieces to get the hang of it, then work toward smaller things. For larger pieces, do you ever use some kind of filler under the green stuff? I was thinking of using foam for bulk, then using green stuff on top to save material and cut cost.
Amazing modeling is almost like 3D printed, I can´t get green stuff or any epoxy clay in my country, there is only one brand that is like the closest thing but is meant for fixing stuff it is named Poxilina and is a small box not like an amount you would use for sculpting
This video is very nice and really helpful, but maybe you could do a video on how to add basic anatomy to your characters? (Like arm muscles or abs and leg muscles.)
Thank you! funnily enough I was actually planning on making some more in-depth anatomy videos. Unfortunately I won’t be able to get to those soon because of what I explain in my most recent update video but once I get back I will do exactly that!
Water is used as both a lubricant and a smoothing aid for pretty much all epoxy clay brands (of which GS is one), I also like to add a bit of petroleum jelly on the tips of my gloves before mixing as I find it stops the epoxy from sticking to my gloves.
How tall are these minis? I'm starting to sculpt my own minis but I want them all to be a consistent height, and I'm a little worried that I might make them a little too tall or a little too short.
Oh cool! I haven’t done many pirates, in one of my dnd character videos I did make a large feathered hat that could be used as a pirate hat if that’s ever a part of the project you get stuck on
What type of sculpting putty are you using? also, I plan to make mini astronauts, to put in Epoxy Resin, the possibility are endless saw some nice pieces and thank you much for the tutorial to making mini's. wow, man for such a mini-man figure added some spectacular details.
Usually super glue (gorilla glue if you can get it) and you just have to let it dry fully, if you have baking powder you can use that to speed up the drying and the bond stronger
Air dry clays don’t work because the smaller parts of the mini will dry before the rest of the mini at it will just fall apart as you try to sculpt it. Your best bet for an alternative is milliput which I’ve used a bit on the channel, it’s cheaper and should be easier to find.
Green Stuff is more of a brand name. The actual material is called kneadatite. Try experimenting with a mix of both GS and Milliput when scuplting to get a more workable, firmer and less sticky material. Green stuff tends to droop and set soft, and milliput will help it keep its shape as well as let you sand/carve the material after it sets.
It’s a 2 part epoxy putty, it acts kind of like a 2 part resin or silicone, but it has about 2 hours after mixed where its pliable and sculpt-able. You can find it on Amazon quite easily, should look like a strip of yellow and blue tape almost.
