How to manual a MTB for beginners

Manuals are a very important bike skill because they can set you up for so many different things, like bunny hopping, for instance.
To get into a manual, bend down on to your handlebars and pop up with your arms straight out. If you look down, you’ll stay down, so look directly ahead with your eyes.
Shift your body weight back as far as possible, and stay low down. If you think of a bike like a seesaw, you’ll need to think of the rear wheel as the middle part. To put more weight behind the rear wheel, you’ll need to really commit.
For new riders, this can be a bit scary, so the front wheel ends up popping up a couple of inches and never really comes all the way back. If you’re having this problem, you’re going to need to practice deliberately falling off the back of the bike to overcome your fear. If you’re riding platform pedals while learning, you can always hop off the back if you pull up too far. Once you learn that, there’s nothing to be afraid of.
Once you get your front wheel up, bend your knees. Bending them more makes the front wheel go down, and extending your legs brings the front wheel up. By bending and extending you can keep yourself balanced.
once you nail this technique, you can extend your legs quickly and push your bars forwards to hop. This can help you hop on to something and even keep manualling. There’s a whole world of impressive combo’s you can try while shredding the trails, or just dicking around in the street.
Thanks for watching, and leave any questions you have in the comments for me, and other RU-vidrs to answer. Thanks for watching, and we’ll see you next time.

Tonight I nearly looped my bike while trying to manual for the first time ever. I was shocked, it happened so suddenly, I didn't even expect the front tyre to come up so fast, it was like a balance beam tipping over. Hard work and practice paid off! Some tips for anyone else struggling: 1) Drop your seat post. It's immensely difficult to manual when your seat gets in the way. 2) Put the ball of your feet on your pedals, don't have your foot too far forwards. 3) Drop your heels low like you're digging in with your feet. Good pedals and flat shoes will stop your feet from slipping. 4) Don't pump down with your arms or pull back with your muscles, the pump is all in the inertia of dropping your chest and butt. 5) Sit back as far, as low, and as fast as you can go, keep your back straight (!!!) and let your arms lock out. 6) Make sure you're covering your rear brake with a spare finger, the first time your tyre comes up for real you'll need a new pair of undies.

Karina I’m late to the party, I know. But 6!!! The front wheel came up so fast and I was on a slight downslope as well. I was just fooling around, cause I never got anywhere close to a manual or looping out, and all of a sudden the wheel was up. Manualing way too fast for comfort, I jumped off the back after a few feet, realized I was going way too fast for that and jumped back on. Then I went and cried a little. It was a cool day

Seth's Bike Hacks hi dude, I want to learn this skill but the right way is still secret for me, do I have to help with pedal stroke to lift my front wheel from the ground, does it make it easier or just do I have to use my weight ? I think the first pedal stroke is helping but you are losing the attack position (strong leg front) and its uncomfortable, but if you stroke, it makes bike to fall down the front wheel ..
@SethsBikeHacks
@SethsBikeHacks 9 лет назад
Dethklok 666 I think losing the position of your dominant foot would be too big of a tradeoff to be worthwhile. Getting the front wheel up is the hardest part for most people, but it's actually the easiest part of doing a manual. I see a lot of people trying to pop up without "preloading" or pushing down on the bars first. Also, dropping the saddle really low helps a lot while learning. Popping up is more of a mental roadblock than anything else, so just keep messing around and you'll eventually get it.

I have watched a bunch of your vids and I wanted to say I really like them. Your info is good and your riding style and attitude match mine. At 28 I'm no spring chicken, but I recently rode park for the first time. I rode my hardtail, my buddy's dirt jumper, and another buddy's bmx. Riding trails is my main focus but practicing skills, whether riding park or 'fucking around in the street', has made me way more confident blasting over the gnarly shit out on the mountain, and I'm starting to see more interesting lines popping out at me everywhere. cheers!

Like I learned to ride wheelies on a dirt bike 30+ years ago. You dont know how far to take something until you've taken it too far. Then you know the limit. On a dirt bike its your foot on the rear brake, on a mtb its a finger on the rear lever.

Try this: From stand up position, first lower your body as much as you can (compressing your weight against the floor) , then push your hips back. The movement must be a L shape. If you cut the corner it'll not work. If you miss the first part, it'll not work.
