In this video, we demonstrate how to identify and measure leaf springs for cars and trucks. Some vehicle applications have multiple spring options. To ensure you get the right replacements, an OEM part number is needed, or some simple measurements can be taken in order to ensure you get the right part the first time.

I wish I had seen your video before I went along with the "Cut-Sheet" on how my fifth-wheel came from the factory. The call out was 26" springs. I provided this information to a major trailer parts supplier who also does videos on how to measure trailer springs. They, measure eye to eye. I could not do that as my springs were badly flattened. I knew this measurement would be very inaccurate. After emailing the trailer parts company the factory cut-sheet, they suggested a specific model of spring equaling the length of 26" as on the sheet. The springs and an entire new triple axle hanger kit and upgraded equalizer were installed. That's when the trouble started. All the springs were running diagonally (not level). The eye of each spring was crammed into the frame of the trailer and there was no "equalization" between the springs. But I rode with them anyway. I was told by the supplier that the springs needed time to "set-in." Well, after 2 years of nothing new.... I called them back and they told me, " Sir, we only send what the customer orders. We are not responsible for ensuring you have the correct springs for your application. Please contact your installer." Prior to calling the installer, I called Dexter Axle. The senior engineer (semi-retired) asked me to take pictures and several very specific measurements. I did. He looked at the information and said, "Sir, your springs are TOO long. 26" from the factory is the "loaded" measurement. You need 25 1/4" springs for the proper set-up." I felt demoralized.... I trusted in a "Major supplier" to assist me. They have more install videos than God has pearls on the gates... But now, after watching your video, I realize they were wrong in their request for information from me.... And I thought I was doing the right thing.... I paid $2000 to have the trailer fitted with new suspension/labor. It's not that I couldn't do the work... but replacing three axles worth of hardware on the public streets with basic hand tools is a nightmare... (Note: I replaced the leading axle in July of 2018, by myself, on the streets of Las Vegas. The asphalt was over 165 degrees... F..k) So I contracted it out to a valid suspension/lift (super trucks) shop. He does great work. He too, trusted the trailer parts supplier to provide the right product. Now, I'm going to have to buy the right springs and install them myself (My lift guy has a new shop and no place to pull in a 40 foot toy hauler)... in the street. The springs alone are $300... including shipping for 6k axles.... I just went out and measured my old, original busted up and flattened springs. They measure 14" from center of bolt to center of eye across the face of the spring--as in your demonstration. Again, thank you for demonstrating the correct way to measure...

Yes but what do you measure to get diameter, all the way across or just to the eye?

How can u measure how much weight a spring can carry?

Unfortunately, there is no way to measure the capacity of a leaf spring without specialized equipment. A new spring has a rated capacity that it is designed to carry but there is no way to tell how much capacity is lost through years of use.
