How to melt plastic bottles and get a shiny finish

I have been experimenting with melting HDPE plastic from bottle and jugs. See what I did different from others on RU-vid. I found out that when plastic cools it will not stick to glass. Glass causes the plastic to have a shiny finish that looks absolutely great.

The last few days I watched a lot of videos about melting hdpe. Most people do not go higher than 350F. They say at that temperature there are no fumes and they (can) do it inside. Your hdpe is more melted and therefore it shrunk much more. Everything has its pros and contras because you have less air bubbles. Using glass is a very good tip. Thanks for sharing.
@CrackerSwamp
@CrackerSwamp 8 лет назад
+Hans de Groot Thanks for your comment, another tip is the way you prepare it for melting. Cutting up your HDPE jugs, helps keep air bubbles down. Take a look. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cWYxVYbE3hI.html Please subscribe.. Although they say you can melt this indoors without the odor it's still not a good idea... Please down melt this indoors or at least have plenty of ventilation. It's not what you don't smell that will get you!

Maybe you might have more success if you put both plates in the oven in the beginning with a lot more plastic and put the brass rod alongside so that everything gets hot at the same time. Then when the plastic gets melted enough you put the bottom plate on top with the rod in it to flatten it out while the plastic continues to melt.

Off topic, but Paul Williams is your cousin how many times removed? Amazing resemblance. Curious if that oven is convective and what your experiences between the two have been. Also, have you thought of loading the empty areas of oven with dense filler such as brass plate, then castings etc, and preheating them prior to inserting your crucible?

Make sure it says HDPE on those bottles. I can't say what the results would be with any other plastic.

You are lucky. Some plastics stick so well to bare glass that you will rip chunks out of the glass trying to pry the plastic off. Plastic milk jugs are HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) and water bottles/pop bottles are PET (PolyEthylene Terephthalate), so you know what plastic you are working with. Dense structural plastics like the molded inside plastics in refrigerators and plastic car bumpers/body parts are ABS.

Use a release agent.. cooking oil, WD40, motor oil ect. Some release agents gets hot and stain the plastic

First time I saw this method. Glass seems to work. Been melting in a small oven and in a griddle. Couldn't get that finish. Next I get myself Pyrex dishes :)
@inhibited44
@inhibited44 4 года назад
I tried your method except I had already turned the jugs into flat plastic cubes for storage purposes. Unfortunately, it didn't work well for me and the plastic melted onto the pyrex. It didn't melt completely either. I had to reheat the pyrex to separate the pie plates. Pyrex is an insulator to heat.My best results are using small, non-stick baking pans . I don't know how to show a picture of it here. Thank you for showing us your try and I hope others have success with it.

I found if you melt the plastic the second time it doesn't melt into the clear liquid so that hard bit would be the second stuff that you put in that you've already melted once I find it's better than melt the one time
@ftrikerfox

try putting more plastic in the glass pyrex dish to about 1/4" thick then retry it making sure the top glass is evenly weighed down then try to get square pyrex dishes never though about rolling it up I always cut it into 1/2" square or there abouts.
@bmxandbikegames

And if you use the side of the milk carton to the top milk can't direction made out of three different grades of if you melt the same plastic sides is the best plastic but if you just melt the tops and then you met some with the sides then you'll get that hardness in the middle

This is fantastic! Thank you so much for sharing this. It answered exactly what I wanted to know. :) I have recently learned that resin won't stick to HDPE so I want to melt some and use it to make molds of certain things that I can then cast with resin. I use a liquid silicone that I mix and pour currently. I have also tried several molding materials that you can melt and use again which were flexible like silicone. I didn't like how they worked with resins though. Silicone works great with resin but I can't melt and use it again to make a new mold. I figure I can do this with HDPE but I still need to test the quality of the mold made. I also may use it in the way mold putty is used by pressing the items I want to make a mold if into warm HDPE. - Heidi

Will do though my creative channel id is nettypreat and it may end up on Instagram instead of RU-vid. Maybe both. :) I also have to get over my slight anxiety about melting it in my house. :P I can use my clay toaster oven to melt it in. I also need to check and see if I have any glass containers in the right sizes and if not then visit my local Dollar Tree to get some. :P What is the best temperature to melt it at?
@Heal-Naturally
@Heal-Naturally 7 лет назад
I would make sure you have a vent just in case but set your temp to bake at 350 degrees F for 20 minutes is a good start.
@BlackCat_2
@BlackCat_2 7 лет назад
Cool I may have to do a test or two tomorrow. The entire top lid comes off leaving it open if I want to or I can just move it a little bit as well. It is a nice toaster oven that can rotisserie a chicken though with all I have 'cooked' in it I wouldn't use it for food ever. :P The lid comes off because there is a sort of grilling attachment pan thing that goes on there and also a griddle pan that goes up there as well. Edit: I can also probably use HDPE in my silicone molds in the oven as long as I don't put the temp too high. I would have to heat it longer. I also found a really nice patterned glass dish on the dollartree website and if I melted HDPE in that I would just leave what came out as is. :) Also learning that HDPE can be turned on a lathe so very happy to think of all the possibilities there. :D

Do you think it can be formed into much thinner pieces? Im trying to recycle into material useful for building storage bins. Boxes, office organization, shelving, etc. I was thinking, maybe if it was heated to a much higher temperature? Idfk. Anyone?

You can make it as thin as you want with enough pressure. They do it all the time with hydraulic presses.

Can making a mould out of cement be a good idea?
@Heal-Naturally
@Heal-Naturally 5 лет назад
I don't think so unless.. it has to have really thick walls in order to support high clamping pressure. Now.. if you were making electrical boxes, I would make flat sheets out of plastic then saw the sides out of it them, then melt corners together with a paint stripping heat gun. You can get at Harbor freight

This is not far from how cell cast acrylic plexiglass is made. The acrylic monomer and catalyst are injected between two glass plates in a "cell" and they react to polymerize in acrylic glass

Plastic injection into a mold. It's how alot of things are made but the cost to make molds varies whether you machine it for multiple pieces made or single / low volume runs made from wood.
