Hey, I am a mother of 2 kids. I got terrible memory loss due to pregnancy since 4.5 years ago. (At this time, I did not remember most of the evens in my life before I give birth). Then I decided to practice to gain my memory back since 3 years ago. I saw your video 6 months ago but I did not ready yet. Now I am ready. I could remember 12 cards in....5 mins now. For others people, it's nothing. But for me, it means a lot. Today, I continue to practice for the full deck of card. I will do it because I want to show for other mothers (in Vietnam) that they can gain their memory back after loss memory due to pregnancy. Thank you for all your videos... I am a fan of you.

I assigned cards by people's initials, the suits being the first letter of the last names (D, C, H or S). First names, Ace & Jack are A & J, but the queens and kings are actual or fictional monarchs (eg - King David, Queen of Sheeba). 2 = D (arbitrary choice), 3 is a backwards E, 4 begins with F, 5 looks like an S, 6 is an upside-down small g, 7 is L flipped and backwards, 8 looks like B, and from spelling, 9 = N and 10 = T. Works 4 me, the 10 of spades!

Thank you for your great video. I changed things a little. Using all Super Heros Characters. A - 10 are Heros, 7 - 9 are monsters, 3 - 6 are Villians, and 2s and love interests such as Mary Jane, Lois Lane, est. I did this because it alines better with card counting. Then... I felt that Object and Action were too similar. So I when with Person, Super Power or weapon, and Location. Location conflicted a bit with my memory palace so I shrink everything down to a miniature scale and that seemed to help.

Hello Nelson - I have just started learning this and find it fascinating. Can you offer suggestions on how to practice learning a deck of cards, multiple times, in one practice session? I'm not able to get through the entire deck yet and so I begin again from the start. I'm having problems with mixing up images in my loci from previous attempts. Can I use just one memory palace for my deck of card memorization or do I need to have many places and rotate them? How do you clear memory palaces? Hope my question makes sense! Thanks in advance!

All those tutorials are fantastics and very well done. Thank you for making them, I'll be spreading them around. I'm also working on filming and editing a bunch of tutorials about memory and learning (in French). It's a whole new skill to learn and much more time consuming than I would have thought. So far I've been experimenting and getting both good and bad results. Any advise on what type of not overly expensive camera or editing software I should use? Any particular website I should check out?
@NelsonDellis
@NelsonDellis 7 лет назад
Thanks! I started with iMovie (on Mac) for editing, which is very basic and it was totally fine to get started. Now I use Premiere Pro (expensive if you're on a budget, but worth it). As for cameras, you can see the gear I use in the description of the video. To make tutorials, the gear doesn't really matter honestly. I've done bits of my videos with an iPhone even, in a pinch. If you have a story or a good idea, then camera doesn't really matter. What I think is important is audio (At least for tutorial), so make sure you have a good external mic (see the ones I use in the video description - there's an awesome one that plugs right into your iPhone).
@LearnToJuggleNOW

Awesome Video Nelson. I took all 52 cards and linked them to people using the major system For the spade cards I used a shovel meaning people who passed away. Sometimes the person doesn't follow the major system but that's alright with me. Hearts are movie characters example 6 of hearts is Jason Bourne 9 of hearts is Obi Won Diamonds are presidents so I took presidents 31-43 and stuck a female in there for the queen. Maybe I will rethink it though.

I find it difficult to remember who it is in my memory palace that is doing the A and O. For example - If I have Tiger Woods eating a beard. I sometimes can't recall if it's Tiger Woods or Michael Jordan or Jack Nicholson eating a beard (for example). The eating of the beard I remember no problem - it's the person that I find hard. @NelsonDellis
@NelsonDellis 5 лет назад
@@ryanlee1195 Great question. My thoughts: the most important thing is to train a little bit every day. Doing too much can quickly get overwhelming. You want to stay motivated every day to get better. So choosing one event (cards is a great choice) or maybe two is a perfect place to start. Yes you're getting good at just one or two events, but you'll be simultaneously building a foundation for your memory techniques, which can be easily applied to other events. In short, GO FOR CARDS!
@NelsonDellis
@NelsonDellis 5 лет назад
Will H couple remarks here: actually a 6 card PAO does not exist. Yes there are 2 card systems, but they are not based on PAO. Secondly, a lot of competitive memorizers have broken 30 seconds while using PAO. The current world record of 12.75 seconds was done with a 3 card PAO.
@ryanlee1195

@@NelsonDellis I keep practice at least one time a day I can now do it around 6 mins, but here comes another question. Every time when I try to practice more then one time in a short period of time, I always mess up the people on the location in my palace, this is really limiting my practice. Are there any way I can just clean up my palace? Or I should prepare more palace for memorize cards?

Hi Nelson. I can't seem to get below 15 minutes without sacrificing accuracy. Any advice? Do you suggest 1) ignoring time, getting the recall perfect, then trying to reduce time, or 2) maintaining a shorter time, ignoring the accuracy, and then trying to improve on the accuracy?
@danielmcpherson9062
@danielmcpherson9062 2 года назад
It's been 2 years, so I might not be of help to you, but maybe to others. It all depends on what you're planning on doing, are you memorising them just cause you can (perfectly valid reason) or are you doing it for competitions? If it's the former, then do what you want. But if it's the latter, then I would recommend focusing on accuracy since (as far as I'm aware) in competitions, it doesn't matter if you've memorised all 52 cards, if you make a mistake on the 6th card, then you're only going to get points for the first 5 cards Happy memorising :)

Awesome video! However, I am trying to memorize each card with each corresponding position in the deck. Since you put everything into chunks of threes and you therefore use 17 memory palace places (instead of 52), you cannot derive the position of a card in a deck. Do you have a solution for this as well :)? Can I somehow combine the PAO-System with the PEG-System to solve this problem?
@jmm5765
@jmm5765 3 года назад
Osho Mosho This works for the positions as well! :D So, for example let's say you have 5 images memorized, and each image had 3 cards (person is the first, action is the second, object is the third) So if you want do know card number 11 in the deck, you just count the images, but count each image as 3, so: first image, 1, 2, 3; second image, 4 5 6; third image, 7, 8, 9; fourth image, 10, 11, 12. So you see the eleven is in the fourth image, and it's the second number of the fourth image: So it works like this: (image = x1(person), x2(action), x3(object)) And since your eleven is in the x2 position of the fourth image, it is going to be the action of the fourth image, and that is going to be the 11th card :D More questions let me know

I use pegwords based on the major number system, and a second pegword list for the cards. For example my pegword for 13 is "time" (13=tm) and my pegword for 4 of hearts is "hare" (h for heart, r for 4). If the 4 of hearts is in the 13th position I form a picture of a rabbit associated with a clock. I usually can't memorize a shuffled deck in a single pass, but have done it a couple times. But with a little study I can memorize it. One of my favorites is to hand someone a deck and say "name a card" and in one second, tell them where it is.

For instance dream is Freddy Krueger, the verb "to dream" means to slash with a razor glove, the adjective "dreamy" means in the process of morphing into Freddy (like the car at the end of the first film), and the setting (if I need a place) is the boiler room. For all of these I still think the word "dream". "Steam" is not that memorable, so for SQ I changed the rule Squid squishes squeaky squash in squalor. Right now I'm trying to convert everything into clusters of 5. Person- action (transitive verb)- adjective (can hyphenate a noun or add ing to a verb if needed), object (can be the same as the person), and place. For the most part all are based on the Lorayne systen, but if I have a strong enough image I'll make exceptions and link to the person instead. I prefer clusters of 5 because we think in base-ten numbers. Also I already have a system to automatically get ten locations out of any room: 4 bottom corners, floor, 4 top corners, ceiling the leftover adjective-noun pair can just be floating in space. Outside I can use a pair of familiar buildings: the corners and the roofs. A couple examples: AC = Cat: Cat cuts cute cat in a litterbox. 5S= Sail: Popeye sails (uses as a sailboat) slow sail in a boat KH: Hank hangs hanging (or hung) Hinge on a Hankey Ks: Sing (or Sting): Sting sings(to or about) singing(or stinging) singer(or stinger) on a piano bench 10S Zeus: Zeus Zeuses (throws lightning bolts at) saucy Zeus(or Suzie) on Mount Olympus. These are only redundant in the description because in a single deck, the card won't be repeated. It's still a work in progress. I'm still having getting it completely error free.

Also: For JH "Heart" and QH "Queen", do NOT use the bands in your mental image. Queen had a male singer, yet is represented by the Queen, and Heart has a female singer yet is represented by the Jack. Furthermore, Heart has a song and album named "Little Queen". It makes it far too easy to get the two crossed.

awwww no goood. you have two swinging actions! lol jk nice video. I use PAO and i have my names, actions, and objects all down to one or two syllables. Despite the picture in my head being the REAL thing that matters, i found even having the P,A, and O down to short words has also helped me with regard to speed. While using a 17 location mind palace.

Isnt there one card left in the end if you use a 17 location mind palace? (17 times 3 = 51).. what do i do with the let over card?
@davidgrass4184
@davidgrass4184 4 года назад
so how do you distinguish repeating actions once they are "disassociated" with the person doing the action? So once swinging is inside a different person/action, how do you know if it was Tiger or Serena?
@NelsonDellis
@NelsonDellis 4 года назад
Yup, what Nathaniel said. It's the same verb word technically, but in my mind, two completely different actions.
@davidgrass4184
@davidgrass4184 4 года назад
So you would typically avoid actions such as singing for instance? Cause that would be difficult to distinguish?

I've read many and the most fun and interesting I think clearly is Moonwalking With Einstein. When it comes to good training tips, Dominic O'Brien's books and some other ones are good, but I actually found websites like mullenmemory and memory-sports and artofmemory dot com to be the most helpful ressources.

Hey Aavash, sorry I missed your other comment. "Moonwalking With Einstein" is a great general intro to the memory world. But for nitty gritty techniques, I'd tell you to get my book but it won't be out until next year :D In the mean time, I'd check out artofmemory.com (they have a great forum with tons of content).

Do you have a separate pao system for cards and numbers?
@NelsonDellis
@NelsonDellis Год назад
The number system is 00-99. The cards are only 52. So, yes, the cards are mostly a subset of the 00-99 images.

Quick question, do we assign a POA to all 52 cards? And as we memorize the deck, group the cards into 3s? Also, love the content Nelson!

I am a big football fan and I remember jersey numbers of many players. Is that a good way to remember the number cards ? Hearts can be Manchester united for example, and then 6 of hearts will be Paul pogba.

Lol, Tiger Woods just won the Master's so your comment was funny that he used to be the king of clubs. But I really like your method. I used a similar process to memorize three graduate papers in theology for my comps. I broke down each paper into roughly 26 parts. For one I used letters in the alphabet. Another was numbers from 1 to 26. The third paper I used my room and objects as I walked around it that were in consecutive order as I thought about the room Then just made wild associating images for everything. We had to write without any notes for 90 minutes for each paper. They provided a clean notepad and a computer without internet. Immediately I wrote the alphabet and my 26 image words, then just wrote my paper. Same with the other 2. But I practiced in my head for weeks with just note cards till I had it down. Considering that I was 60 years old with not the best memory, I did very well and passed with flying colors and got my masters.
