I recommend the Michael Scott Method: “I have taken a unique part of who you are and I have used that to memorize your name. Baldy, your head is bald, it is hairless, it is shiny, it is reflective like a mirror, M your name is Mark.”

For 0-9 I would recommend the way Kevin trudeau taught it with the body list: 1 Toes 2 Knees 3 Muscle (thigh) 4 Rear 5 Lovehandles 6 Shoulders 7 Collar 8 Face 9 Point (The point of your head/crown of your head/or maybe it was just point to your head lol) 0 Ceiling Learned this over 20 years ago

The only hitch in this system (which I do like, because it's thematic) is that you have multiple consonant sounds within individual mnemonics, when each single digit (0-9) should have only one consonant sound. Toe and Knee would be fine, but Muscle to me conjures M/S/L, which translates to my mind as a 3-digit number.

I like this. Pictures with action are the key. 1. Peg ( a place to put info.. body/palace) 2. Turn INFO into a PICTURE 3. ACTION make the picture stick to the peg with vivid action using all senses, exaggeration and emotion. It takes practice but is more fun than rote memory.

Good vid but one potentially confusing bit - as written, both the 6 and 7 seem to stand for "ch." Obviously the hastily scrawled letters for the 7 are meant to be "ck" but unfortunately looks identical to the "ch" above it and the letters "ck" are never said aloud which otherwise should've cleared it up for those inclined to be easily confused.

Hey Nelson, What in your opinion is the most effective system for memorizing numbers? Dominic or the major system? I started with the Major system but found it confusing to decode it. If you follow the Major system, how do you generally chunk the numbers? Do you have a pre-built library for it?
@AnthonyMetivierMMM
@AnthonyMetivierMMM 7 лет назад
Brilliant and fun explanation! What do you think of the different explanations that have been offered for the origins of the Major, the many variations that have been offered and the number one need in the brains of many learners ... Why these sounds and not others? I heard a great one from someone for helping to remember 2=N the other day, by the way: Noah took animals on the ark in pairs. I guess you have to know that one from childhood or otherwise, but I thought it was a brilliant, "instantly-memorable" solution for those who already have that story burned into their brains. Thanks for the cool video! :)

Hi Nelson! New sub - love this channel! Can I ask you if this is the right system to use for my sales job (electronics & appliances). I need to memorize repetitive tech specs & dimensions attached to unique model numbers, and compare the differences. I think I have a vague idea on how I could break it down in common groups & spend the bulk of my efforts memorizing the model # to attach to the tweaked grouping that would fit it…but I just started learning memorization techniques and I want to make sure I’m choosing the right system for the job.

Hi Nelson! What would you recommend as strategy for a phonemic Major system when English is not your native language? How would you do it in Dutch?: 0 = nul (so n?) 1 = can still be t + d 2 = can still be n 3 = can still be m 4 = vieR so r. 5 = L (roman) 6 = z ? 7 = z ? 8 = Acht 9 = n ? negen? repeat from 2 and 0? Orrr just stick with english?

@JeffTheHokie
@JeffTheHokie 3 года назад
21 can be net, nut, night, knight, nod, nude, Nadia, Ned, etc. You can make up whatever image you want that fits what you are trying to remember. In fact I disagree with the idea of using pre-made pegs. To learn the system just play with a bunch of random numbers free-form (phone numbers are great for this). You may be surprised how fast this becomes automatic. Once you have mastered this , then (and only then) start making pegwords to memorize lists (but free-form the lists' content, pegs are used like loci-for the list position).
@gregmartin3425
@gregmartin3425 2 года назад
I wonder if you can use this system to help memorizing two-digit multiplication products? For example if you always arrange it so your multiplicand is the smaller number: 45 x 72 = 3240. This turns into: rl gn mnrs or real (45) gun(72) manners (3240)? So when someone asks "what is 72 x 45?", you immediately put 45 first, so it's rl gn mnrs all over again. Will this work?

It`s depenging on your purpose. If you are interested in memory sport, when yes. The most of successfull memorizers actually use the 3-digit system. If you study these techniques only for daily for information, 2-digits must be enough.

My approach to memorizing numbers (on humanbenchmark) was always: Verbalizing the last 4-7 digits and repeating them in stable loop. Memorizing the remaining digits visually while constantly repeating the verbalized loop. If your loop is stable from the beginning, the amount of remaining digits is easier to memorize by only looking at it. That got my personal highscore to 14 digits. At least thats something.

Sir With Major System we can memorise only main name and its dimensions right ? and secondly I'm bit confused about soft g and hard g,can I use different,why ch for 6 and 7 ? Thanks
@NelsonDellis
@NelsonDellis 7 лет назад
Soft g is like: "giant" or "general" or "germ". Hard g is like: "grow" or "gull" or "grand." Make sense? The 'ch' for 6 is like : "cheese" or "change," while the 'ch' for 7 is like "chemist" or "Chris". So 7 is any hard 'k' -like sound that you make (hard g is quite close to a 'k' sound). And 6 is any j-like sound.

Suppose you have a dental appointment at 4:30 PM (or 16:30 in military time whichever works for you). 4:30 is "rams" and 16:30 is "touch mouse". You could picture the dentist doing dental work on a ram (with a line of rams waiting in the lobby) or you can picture him playing with a mouse (touch mouse- hear the words being said while you form the mental image).

Can you use extra consonants? For example, I was trying to come up with a word for 212. I eventually came up with nation, but I really struggled to get there. Could I use extra consonants and ignore the extra ones?
@JeffTheHokie
@JeffTheHokie 3 года назад
It is more flexible than that.. The consonants w.h.and y (why) are unassigned so you can use them anywhere just like vowels. Also you go by sound, not spelling. For me, I group the "th" sound with 1, and the "ing" ending as 2 rather than 27. (At first I imagined it pronounced that way so you only hear the n.) 212 could be nothing, needing, not in, notion, netting, nodding, etc. As for "ing" being 2 rather than 27, you are free to slightly customize the system for your own mind, if you are consistent and can keep it straight. If you just start throwing in already-assigned consonant sounds you are likely to trip yourself up.

@JeffTheHokie
@JeffTheHokie 3 года назад
For that you need a pegword system (look it up, that technique is a separate lesson). Pre-memorize a list of words to associate with each of the numbers 1 through 15. It can be based on this system or rhymes. 1-run: form a mental image of a racetrack. The first thing you are trying to remember can be riding on one of the horses. 2-zoo picture a gorilla cage. 3:tree and so on. For the first mountain, you could make a pun out of its name, and picture it riding on one of the horses (or running on horse legs as if it was a horse). Use the number system to make a word (or phrase) out of its height and put the height in the picture (maybe on or as the second horse). Do the same with mountains 2 through 15 with whatever pegwords you end up using. When I was learning this system, I took my physics book and used pegwords based on this system to memorize the entire periodic table including atomic mass up to the precision in the book. I did that just to see if I could. It took a couple days, but I was able to do it.

It's a great system but the matching of consonant sounds to digits doesn't make much sense (you did your best to explain them but K and two 7s? That was a bit tricky...) Derren Brown, in his book Tricks of the Mind, adapted this to (some are the same BTW): 0 = s, z 1 = l (they look the same and l has one downstroke) 2 = n (2 downstrokes) 3 = m (3 downstrokes) 4 = r (fouR) 5 = f, v (FiVe) 6 = b, p (6 looks like lower case B and both are pronounced the same way) 7 = t, d (7 looks like upper case T and both are pronounced the same way) 8 = j, ch, sh 9 = (hard) g, k (9 looks like lower case G and both are pronounced the same way) This seems to make more sense to me.

if u have a number like 31500 how can u have 2 zz? or how would u memorize 36555
@JeffTheHokie

31500 = "Midol sauce" new hope for PMS sufferers who can't swallow pills, or "metal sauce" for Iron Maiden fans to put on their wings (or perhaps for someone with a really bizarre eating disorder to put on sheet metal). 36555 "Mitchel Hellhole" or "Michelle Hellhole" someone named Mitchel or Michelle who lives in a really bad apartment (a hellhole - hence the nickname)

@@JeffTheHokie Yeah that method makes no sense if you don't know who those people are. Dominic O'Brien's system seems way more powerful because you already have people cemented in your existing memory. He takes 00-99 and breaks the 2 dig pairs into people's initials you know already. So A=1, B=2, C=3 etc etc. So if you had 3322, example: 33=CC is the initials for Charlie Chaplin, 22=BB=Bugs Bunny. Each character also has an action. So to join 33 to 22. Imagine Charlies Chaplin's action was swinging his cane or bowler hat, and bugs bunnies was eating a carrot. You would just remember Charlie Chaplin eating a carrot to link them. I haven't done this major system, but it sounds confusing. That hardest part about Dominic's is remembering the initial characters first, but once you get them down, you won't forget them.

@@Scrottobaggns "Who those people are"? I ask you to imagine something called "metal sauce", What does knowing specific people have to do with imagining a bottle of sauce? The major system has nothing to do with specific people nor does it require any pre-made pegs. It assigns consonant sounds to each of the ten numerals, To learn it, you just play with a bunch of phone numbers by making words and phrases out of them. For me it became automatic very quickly.
@Scrottobaggns
@Scrottobaggns 3 года назад
@@JeffTheHokie I was just saying if your consonant sounds happen to create a persons name, like where you mentioned, "36555 = "Mitchel Hellhole" or "Michelle Hellhole", for me, my characters are pre-made pegs, as you call them, so they already exist in my memory. I have a visual image of who my character is already with an action to go with it. Being as i'm a visual person, for Michelle Hellhole i'd have to create from memory what she looked like in order for me to remember her. But I've never used this system before so i couldn't say for sure. It just sounded like making up new stuff each time would require more work. I guess one benefit of this system would be if numbers repeat, for me i'd have to use the same person and action every time, whereas you could create something new each time.
@JeffTheHokie

 I see what you mean, but you are used to a "this particular word represents this particular number" system. With the major system, that is not the case. For me, the sounds-to-numbers conversion became automatic. I don't have to rack my brain to remember what number Michelle Hellhole represents. Who she is is irrelevant. I immediately know the number by the sound. I could picture a lunatic spouting the gibberish "mush lalala" and would instantly know without any pegs that the number is 36555. I disagree with a lot of the RU-vid creators about the role of pegs. Pre-made pegs are an essential part of the Dominick system, but for the major system, you want the sound-to-number conversion to become automatic. To do that, you need to PLAY with the numbers. Learning pegs at the beginner phase hinders that.

How can I memorize black jack payouts with this?
@NelsonDellis

S Marie memorize them how? In what context. Are you a dealer? If the player wins, just match their bet. Or are you trying to know the 3:2 or 6:5 payouts for blackjack wins?

The gambling game this seems best suited for is the PA skills/Queen of Virginia "skill" games. Those are essentially slot machines built around a loophole to state gambling laws. Whenever you lose a bet, you are offered a side game ("touch here to follow me") that gives you your money back (allowing the company to call it a "skill game"). "Follow Me" is a 20-rep game of Simon with a 3x3 grid- impossible for almost everyone to do by rote, but equivalent to memorizing a 20-digit number on the fly. I label the grid positions 1 through 9, and since zero isn't used, I use s for repeated numbers. The memory part is super easy with this system. The "muscle memory"/habit memory of always sending my fingers to the right button still needs work.

@@NelsonDellis you are correct as it was developed in the century prior. However, he did help bring it into the limelight and push it a lot. That said, he would tell you up and down that he did invent it and needs to be better about granting credit. I think some in history on these techniques are really pretty interesting. I would definitely watch any content that a small dive into the history of memory techniques.
