Honestly, this is the best tutorial on the internet, thank you so much! i’ll have a question if you dont mind. Lets say if we use toms or subkick instead of sub bass, does it make our mix sound thin without sub bass ?
@DowdenProductionAcademy
@DowdenProductionAcademy 2 года назад
Thank you! Glad you liked it :) umm - it could! It really depends on how much low end the subkick or tom has. If it has a good amount of subbass (similar to an actual sub) then you should be fine! Just make sure you are EQing and compressing carefully :)

You can also tempo-sync compressor release times if you want to be clinical about it. The calculation is 60,000 / (your project's BPM) = milliseconds/beat. To sync your compressor release to an 8th note, divide that number by 2. For a 16th note, divide by 4. For a 32nd note, divide by 8. Etc.

@@dver89 That is the clearest explanation I've read. 60,000/BPM/2 = release time (Or /4 or /8) Easy and simple. Thank you

Awesome tutorial as usual ! How did you do to display the Gain reduction metering on the compressor ? I don't have it displayed on mine !
@DowdenProductionAcademy
@DowdenProductionAcademy 2 года назад
That's only on Ableton 11, unfortunately! You can try using SPAN or Ableton's peak meters to try and guage how much gain reduction. :)

Amazing Bro!! Could I use utility and set to mono the Sub and kick to avoid the phase problem?
@DowdenProductionAcademy
@DowdenProductionAcademy 2 года назад
It could definitely help! If there is side information in the signal, I believe down mixing to mono brings both elements from stereo into mono. If there is phase issues between the two signals, then it won't help.

Great tutorial, pretty clear. When EQ'ing the bass were you EQ'ing the group as a whole (The sub, main and top layers); or just the sub component? Also noticed you're using the x4 to roll off your low-end, why use this over the default?
@DowdenProductionAcademy
@DowdenProductionAcademy 2 года назад
I tend to EQ both the group and the different layers separately. It's important to focus on each layer, and then an overall EQ to do final overall toning. The x4 cuts off more db/octave. This will ensure a more aggressive cut, and reduce the posibility of the layers overlapping.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:00 🎛️ Mixing low end is challenging without proper room treatment or sound systems. 02:03 🔊 Creating room for low end by EQing overlapping frequencies is essential. 04:45 🎚️ Rolling off frequencies below 20-40 Hz helps avoid muddiness in the mix. 05:57 🎛️ Sidechain compression clears space for kick by reducing bass during kicks. 08:08 🎵 Adding saturation can enhance bass warmth and presence. 09:16 🔼 Adding harmonic content through waveform changes can improve bass presence. 11:36 🎹 Adding a harmonic layer, like a pluck, can enhance bass presence and warmth. 12:58 🎚️ Careful EQing after saturation can prevent muddiness in the mid frequencies. 14:31 🎚️ Light bus compression enhances cohesion and presence in the low end. 15:42 🎛️ Balancing mix levels to a reference track aids in achieving a professional low end. 18:44 🔄 Checking mix compatibility in both stereo and mono is crucial for consistency. 21:04 🔄 Using mid-side EQ can address phase issues in stereo-imaged low end. 22:52 🎧 Test your mix on various devices to ensure it translates well across systems. Hey Dowden, what's up? I had missed the beginning of this video the first time I watched it. I was surprised by the Subpac, I had to google what it was because I had no idea what it was exactly. Sometimes I saw you live with that on your back and I wondered without too much importance what it was, I swear I came to think that it was a back corrector of those that are sold now (lol). My question is, are you still using it? Would you recommend it?
@DowdenProductionAcademy
@DowdenProductionAcademy Год назад
Hey! I still use it but not as much as I used to. I used it more when my studio was much smaller and the bass response was terrible. I will use it when checking final mixes, but not so much for writing anymore :) I definitely recommend it but it is quite expensive so it's not a priority purchase.

Also how do you know what frequencies are f#. Is that just common knowledge or can the eq tell you?

After years of music production you get an idea of some frequncy and keys, but I always double check with the EQ readout :)

At the end you stopped changing the EQ8 on your Reference track, along with the one on the Master, that was a bit confusing.
@DowdenProductionAcademy
@DowdenProductionAcademy 2 года назад
I'm not sure what you mean, but sorry if it was a bit confusing for you! Unless you mean I was changing one EQ or the other, they would both have the same effects in the processing that I was doing. :)
