How To Mix Thinner For Cheap Acrylic Paint

Learn my simple recipe for mixing thinner, to use with inexpensive acrylic paints, for airbrushing fishing lures and crafts. This thinner works on thick, tube types of acrylics, to reduce them down to be sprayed with an airbrush. Works great for fishing lures, plugs, crankbaits, and all other types of crafts where a thin paint is needed.

In general, you thin the paint to a consistency about that of heavy cream. It will take some experimenting to see what thickness works with your particular airbrush. Thanks for watching!

The paint will be thinner, but brush application cannot match the thin, smooth application that an airbrush does.

Can you use turpentine oil or white spirit instead of the shellac alcohol?

I don't think I would try it unless I was outside, with a respirator on, and a fire extinguisher close by.

after mixing the mixture, i found out that the mixture become murky. Is this normal and usable? do advice on this thanks.

boysilvia15 yes it becomes murky because of water and alcohol reaction. It should eventually clear up.

Hi Chris, Question what type of glycerin are using ? is it vegetable-based ?

The glycerin I use in the video is from Soap Expressions, Item #376574. It is 100% vegetable based. I got it at Hobby Lobby.

If you don’t have denatured alcohol you can use 70-99% isopropyl alcohol.

You can use the iso alcohol, but it is basically diluted with water, but you don't know how much, hense the 70-99% label. It takes the formula proportions out of adjustment and makes mixing a guessing game.

Glycerin seeps the mixture smooth and flowing without spattering.

It’s always so confusing. In Australia. Denatured alcohol is generally called methylated spirits, while shellac, while also a solvent, is a completely different product. I assume your thinner would be much more potent than those made with IPA.
