Right now, think about something you want to change or improve.
How do you make lasting and powerful changes and life improvements? And how do you keep going even when you don’t have the motivation to do it?
If change was easy, we’d all have six-pack abs and a million dollars in the bank.
And that’s where this episode comes in: Mel is here to teach you the HOW.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
- How to self-motivate so you can take action
- What dopamine is and how it’s linked to motivation
- The simple steps you can take today to tap back into your internal drive
- The 2 truths about motivation that you are forgetting
- The research-backed reason you continue, initiate, or quit something
- What to do when someone you love is losing motivation
- The real reason you cannot #motivate others
- How to cope with not getting something you have been working towards
- How to navigate feeling “behind” or in a “comparison game”
- How to pick yourself back up when you feel like life’s punched you in the face
- The first (and most important) step in understanding what drives your motivation
- One powerful question to ask yourself when you feel “stuck”
- What role #dreams and #goals play (and it’s not always to achieve them)
- How to hack the moment of hesitation we all feel
- The most powerful reframe you need about failing
- How to get clear about the direction you are going in without wandering aimlessly
- Mel’s 5-second rule that will move you towards action (even when you are not motivated)

It’s often getting started that’s the hardest part. If you dare yourself to do just 5-10 mins of the thing you need to do, it often results in much longer or seeing the task through to completion. ✔️

Thank you, Mel. I’ve been procrastinating laundry today. “No matter how much I do, it’s never done” “the closets are trashed so how can I even put stuff away” CHANGE THE STORY! “I don’t feel like doing laundry, but I do REALLY feel like getting dressed in clothes I feel good in tomorrow. I will have a much happier day if I can do that tomorrow, so I’m going to do the laundry”

Our son had a similar experience. I heard this tip to tell h s seniors applying to their “dream” school. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Apply to a school you know they will accept you and also apply to your top 3-4 schools at the same time when you apply to your dream school. Last advice came from a Univ professor told our son when he didn’t get accepted to the major at his dream school. “You have the grades & the discipline, GO WHERE YOU ARE LOVED”. Our son choose his no 2 school and they offered him 60% academic schokarship for all 4 years. He got so much work experience from that school for his employment after graduation.

It took so many years for me to admit that my problem is not giving my all to what i want to become or do. I knew i was not but i never sincere enough to admit it. Here i am at a point tired, burned out, feeling lost and failed on things I've not tried enough to achieve or succeed, giving continuous excuses to quit and procrastinate waiting for the motivation that would never come. The shift happens now. I'd not wait for anything to come or happen. Thank you Mel! ❤

Something I have experienced as a woman going through menopause and how that affects motivation when hormones/health are NOT in balance... it plays a HUGE part so if this might be you and all of these strategies still aren't working or you just are not DOING IT... give yourself grace and compassion and get your hormones and health checked out... that could very well play a role! Hugs!

My friend is looking after my 3girls today so I can listen to you uninterrupted 😂and get some stuff sorted in the house. I was offered a day off to collect my thoughts and have me-time. I felt like a kid in a sweet shop...but I realised it's the environment that I have an issue with so going away always feels great, but coming back sucks. If I change my environment permanently, I will no longer feel overwhelmed etc. So I'm flowing on the motivation that this is a rare chance to change things

This is so true! "DO IT!" I heard Harrison Ford say, "Use the Force? NO! FORCE YOURSELF!!" And, I never forgot it. It's even better when you take inspired action. When you FEEL something come through, and it is SO powerful that you slip right into action with a firery passion that yanks you into it beyond your control. I hope everyone can find their passion. If not, well, they have Mel Robbins to give them an idea of how the human mind needs activation. I love this podcast! Always grateful for Mel Robbins 🙏 Thank you! Your 2024 workbook is on point. Hey there! Oakley for the win! 🏆 The Oakley story hit home, resonating so deeply. Your narration brought out the essence of his journey and how it pushed him to transform into the person he aspired to be. In my late 30s, I've been on a similar path, chasing evolving dreams. It takes time, right? Personally, navigating those small emotional hiccups and defending the positive vibes is a daily task. Your episode taught me a valuable lesson-being the conductor and narrator of your story. Talking myself into it, realizing I deserve every bit of success, has been a game-changer. It's a journey that often reveals itself in moments of struggle. Big thanks to Mel and Oakley! Your stories have added a meaningful chapter to my life. 😅😊😂🙏💫👊

I'm glad to hear you say that Mel. It sucks, after I was demoted on my job, no fault of mines and my company just expected me to get over it. It mentally took me down, questioning myself, am I good enough, after I worked so hard for 4 years to get the promotion. I felt so defeated, I was left with such frustration during all of 2023. Now I have to restart all over again to prove myself that I can do the job one more time. I don't feel motivated at all, but in order to keep my job and able to pay my bills, I have to mentally motivate myself to perform in sales once again.🙁

Cleaning up and creating that feng shui vibe brings serious joy, especially with the incense- SIGH Feeling in control, peaceful, until you sit down and face the chaos of tasks. Why's is it a struggle? Not the doing, but the time and energy it takes. Trying to build a system, it's a journey. Thanks a ton for the inspiration. Love ya! Paula here. I actually rarely have a problem with self motivation. Since changing to my carnivore lifestyle 467 days ago and seeing the amazing improvements in my health has shown me how being self-centered motivates me in every aspect of my life. I know people will be appalled at my being self-centered but it does not have to have negative connotations. Because my interconnected consciousness with every living thing on earth has expanded and I have more love and peace in my life. This motivates my every decision to get things done and keep things moving. Mel you are a great Mom and did the right thing when your son was rejected. This was actually depicted on the TV show, Last Man Standing, when Eve was rejected from her dream school, West Point. It was their best episode.

This conversation was a beautiful one to listen to especially since this morning’s Daily Jay was focused on where and from who we seek approval. Jay mentioned his friend Mel Robbins and then this episode popped up while I was still mulling everything over. It is helpful for letting go of things that no longer have a worthwhile ‘why’ as well as forging gently forward in a spirit of the things that call us in the depths of our being.

Omg !! How much did I need to hear this Mel! 😮 how did the universe put this on my recommended videos….idk but boy I love how the universe works. Just last night we had by far the most defeating nights. My son, he’s an amazing hardworking kid! His coaches, other parents, teachers…say so. Kind, with a HUGE heart! He’s been wrestling for a year & 1/2, on the varsity team, fought fair & square to keep that spot. Has had a few wins, but mostly losses. Last night the kid that beat him, turn to our team and bowed and threw his hands up as a sign of complete disrespect. My son was crushed, upset beyond measure. Not over the loss but over the other kid’s reaction. My heart completely shattered 😢

I love how you mentioned that you never see the rejections online. We are often so ill equipped to handle the hard times… parents have so much pressure to never show their kids their personal struggle and how they get through it- it’s this idea that we have to be “strong” for them. I think it had a real paradoxical effect, because they don’t get the benefit of learning from our resilience. I also love how you acknowledged how it sucked. That’s something that I’m learning with my 9yo now… I was telling him “it’s okay, don’t worry” etc and he was resistant to that- and it created a sort of friction. But, I’ve learned it’s so much better when I put myself in his shoes and acknowledge the suck… then he’s way more open and can accept my guidance, instead of fighting to get me to understand/accept his feelings. It may seem like a small change, but it’s been a HUGE blessing. I would love for you to make even more parenting videos! ❤

THANK YOU MEL!🎉😁 SO needed this one! I'm doing the workbook and dealing with the setbacks of past years....last year I was sick and weak from gallbladder issues, in October had surgery and now pain free!😊 In 2022....TONS of car repair and other medical bills just cleaned out my funds I'm saving up. And I do feel like last few years life has kicked me in the face...and wondered how to get the momentum back and get rolling again on my goals. My goal...buy a bus and become a nomad, taking my business of drum wellness program on the road. I only focused on the "when I accomplish this goal I'll be happy" trap, instead I also need to focus on the journey of building my drum wellness business and now adapting it to work with different populations. How much I will learn about myself and grow along the way before I can go on the road.😊

I had a year of the worst moments of my life. My husband passed away, my cat died, I had to give up my home, my dogs, everything I ever dreamed of, and more. Motivation after all of that, is hard. I had to move through the mourning that happens after all of that. Woah, I started a list of things I hated, and what do I really want and need. Last year I wrote a list of what I wanted in a partner. How do I feel better about myself. The changes I made, and the new life I have is amazing.

That son is an amazing young man. We went through this and it was a difficult process.. But today when you broke it down I was reflecting and I’m really realizing how hard and determined my kids worked to get into their dream school and never gave up. Our daughters were wait listed and got into different schools then waitlisted called the week before. Our son dropped out off a UC school he didn’t like and went to another UC dream school and then private school USC paid for his PHD program. It all works out the good news is it’s all about learning how to deal with disappointment and frustration but never giving up its really about life as we all know it. I think your so. Should do the UC common application UCSB Santa Barbara would LOVE him 👍 He will bloom anywhere because he has fantastic parents who care!

Hey, hon. I realized awhile ago that motivation is an emotion and emotions are ephemeral. It takes some work to summon emotions, but the emotion doesn't last. Motivation to me is excitement about doing something productive. You can be productive when you do it for self-respect or to be rational. Being excited about being productive is more fun and stimulating. But being productive out of other reasons is just fine, too.

Mel I heard this on your show and loved it. The It founder said “rejection is God’s protection”. I loved it! Pass that on to your son. God has a bigger dream for him.

Hi Mel, idk if your influence could’ve made any difference for your son being accepted or not. But I do know of parents who feel their kids are entitled due to their money or standing. But I know that the fact that you never used this to push it through for your son is so admirable! You are a wonderful mom by allowing your son to work hard towards what he wants, it is the only way to handle his situation. My daughter went through this same thing as your son. She was absolutely crushed. All I could tell her in that moment, was that it was because there is something even better for her in store. That she needs to trust the process, and other colleges are better suited for her. And shortly after she received a scholarship to the better school, that’s harder to get into. She graduated as a Registered Nurse and works at Primary Children’s Hospital in Oncology. You always amaze me, and I love listening to you! You’re real, your kind, and I dig ya! Keep shining Mel!

All of these ups and downs that we all experience are part of our life’s journey (rejection, disappointment, etc.). Each experience I believe has a reason to it whether or not we realize it at that particular time. I believe that God directs our paths sometimes when we don’t see why our course in life doesn’t make sense to us at the time. I also believe that this (reaction) is part of our human condition.

My daughter is applying to 25 top med schools, same issues. The best way to motivate is to let go of the outcome. Do your best that’s all your son can do at this point! Good luck and keep filling out applications, take a gap year if he doesn’t get into his dream schools. It will all work out- I promise🙏

Three days before I had an interview and did not went well that I sensed from her facial expression and she told me that she will call me by Friday if I got the job. Today is Thursday and I am going to call her for the follow up whether I got it or not. I was so depressed when she said I will call Friday and sensed like a no. And, I seriously needed this particular topic podcast to understand life. Thanks Mel!

GM Mel. Question: Why does Oakley 'have' to continue his education? I highly recommend being self employed. I too am dyslexic but we dyslexics are creative as hell and have a high intelligence. He is brilliant. Always has a following in his podcasts, for one.
@bethmcdaniel4094
@bethmcdaniel4094 8 месяцев назад
I obviously don't know Oakley, but I would answer because he has goals and dreams. My 15 year old has dyslexia and wants to be a dermatologist. Will she achieve that? It remains to be seen, but she has wanted to do that as long as I can remember. I am not going to tell her she can't. I can say she is working her buns off. Congrats on finding success in self-employment

Because education opens doors. Oldest Masters in early education, specialized in literacy second kid is a court judicial clerk who does warrants for state court house BA criminal justice/Sociology Last Masters in Sports Exercise science/ Marketing working as support for national broadband company. Great insurance; trips to Hawaii, Australia, London, Costa Rica cuz they have great incomes. My husband worked for a newspaper as sports and editor for decades without a college degree, raised family without health insurance. We’re in debt. That’s why!
