Great video as always. I use a Gopro 10 on my helmet, a 9 on my handle bars for the "hero" shot, a 360 Max, and an Innovv K5. I really only use the audio from the Innovv for the sound of the bike. To sink up the video on all the cameras I honk the horn for the audio spike, all the cameras have no issues picking it up where as I've had some not pick up the hand clap. One note on the Purple panda, the first time I tried it I got horrible audio out of it. The Purple Panda has a TRRS plug and the media mod has a TRS port. My original set up I used a 90 degree TRRS to TRRS adapter. When I revisited the Purple Panda, after a multitude of failed experimentation with other solutions, I realized my mistake and used the TRRS to TRS adapter Purple Panda includes with their mic. Way better audio. I have the mic tucked into the left cheek pad and it does a great job picking up my voice. It's a lot of effort to share my rides with my family back in the U.S. but they do enjoy seeing Japan from a motorcycle.
@motorcyclingdetectorist6053
@motorcyclingdetectorist6053 2 года назад
I agree on the Purple panda, it is the best in-helmet mic I have found. I've got one conencted to a Zoom Z1 audio recorder. I went with Akaso action cams and they only support a proprietary mic, so a dedicated recorder was needed. It is more work, but I prefer a dedicated audio track when editing, it makes the swapping of video in/out from several cams easier, but it does come at a sync up cost initially. Akaso cams can create great video, been a good alternate camera for getting started in motovlogging.

Good points here, Ian, particularly the audio. Poor sound will send viewers away from a good video, while good sound may keep your audience watching a lackluster filming effort. I like the Rode mics as well, for the GoPros as well as video camera work. Nice summary of the process, and you did not omit the time required to actually edit our footage into something presentable. It's a lot of work, and I support your comment earlier... "It's nice to just go out and ride without cameras!"

Spot on install Big Rock Moto! I have a different challenge - my GoPro is mounted out in front of my windshield. In addition, I do not want any wires coming from the GoPro back into my helmet (tethered) so, I'm flummoxed. I chose the location of the GoPro first so there is nothing in the way (tall windshield). I have a great stout mount so that part is done. I have a USB charger in the dash to run to the GoPro to record and all-day session. I'm thinking get a GoPro case with the mic adapter space to get that part done right up front. That leaves two cables coming back to inside the windshield - the "new" USB-C to my charge port and the mic cable. I'm thinking a wireless mic so, the receiver is on the handlebars or the like and the transmitter (smaller the better) is in the helmet or on the helmet with a short mic cable inside the helmet. Done. Any advice? would be welcome.

Regarding syncing multiple cameras and even audio from an external audio recorder, if you bring all these files into Final Cut Pro and convert them into a Multicam clip, Final Cut does an excellent job of automatically syncing the multiple files-provided. you captured hand claps or other distinct peak audio sounds! Cheers, and good job on the vido.

Important message Ian. I have accumulated GoPro attachments & accessories for 11 yrs now and learnt a lot. For me, a 3M adhesive mount for GoPro has never failed. If mounting surface is prepped properly, they stick well. I'm spoilt for choice between all my GoPro & RAM gadgets. One of my most important accessories is a remote for my GoPro. I am always fully aware of filming & camera status and film much 'smarter' with less boring & excessive footage. Next investment is a 360 camera - GoPro Max or Insta?

Super tutorial on motovlogging. I’ve been doing it for about 5 years now and learned most of this the hard way by just trial and error. Getting the audio quality acceptable was my biggest challenge. I use the Purple Panda microphone inside my helmet connected to my chin mounted GoPro Hero 8 with the media mod and it works great. I’m adding the Insta360 camera soon and look forward to learning how to use that to make my vlogs more interesting from a video perspective. I use PowerDirector for my editing software and find it easy to use for multiple cameras. I would be interested in your opinion on that software. You have a great channel and I enjoy all your content. Thanks!

Great video, the new GoPro 12 allows to sync up your cargo or center via Bluetooth just like your phone and you can record all the audio from the mic from SNL or Cardo. Emma would be your conversation yourself or if anybody else within the group seems like a really good option to illuminate external microphones and cables and listen, Nat. Secondly, the Insta360 has the little adapter for audio so you can use the SS6 360 as an as a microphone to just like you’re the media by like that and you don’t need a medium mosasaur little after the clips onto that and it’s invisible and use and capture audio for your 362. Thanks for sharing.

This review was excellent, thank you so very much. I've been so unsatisfied with the results of my Akasa 4K and RickRak custom fairing mount made for my Harley Ultra Ltd's fairing. I tried another model cameral and still get "warbly" results. I'm not sure a different camera will fix it, as I have already used two different models. I had the gyro turned on too. Possibly a different brand of camera but more likely the mount is the culprit. You've given me some great ideas to try and thank you very much!

Another really well done video presentation. It might be too boring for some but how you go about organizing your shoot in relation to the final production is a whole other topic that many may not be aware of. (You know, when to get B-roll or whatever…) I believe that’s what separates the pros in the types of presentations you do. Along those lines, one of the challenges I’ve found with the Insta360 and editing is parsing out clips from a really large file. At times I’ve had to leave the camera running for 5-10 minutes at a time just to snag maybe three three-second clips…planning your shots helps unless you’re in unpredictable filming situations like what I tend to shoot. That’s when the Insta360 editing app gets to be a pain. Edit: Ha! Well I guess you did touch on that…teach me not to watch the last two minutes of your piece before I comment! 😎

This is the 3rd time I’m watching this. My sound has been quite good but now that I’ve switched from my GSA to the Scrambler 1200, the lack of the windscreen has introduced a wind whistle which I think is from the peak of my XD4. I just put some gorilla tape over the deadcat to try on my next ride. Oh I tried the Hyperview on my GP11, I think the Superview is still the best view as the detail closer in is better without the Hyperviews distortion.

Hi Ian, some great tips. I'm still debating on getting the 360 camera to add to my gear. It's a $700 camera so I want to be sure it's not going to end up on the shelf, but I think I will use it if I can make the investment. (lucky you got one free!) I'm more interested in it's super wide angle reverse view ability than the funky 360 shots. Even Itchy boots stopped bothering with all that after only a few videos, but today uses it for rear facing views and to record people she talks to by the bike. She started using this technique shortly after spending time with Charly Sinewan who does it extensively. I think it's a good perspective and could be well utilized. As for the resolution, I've always struggled with this one. My videos have been recorded using 1080p at 60 fps thus far. My reason is because when I record at 30 everything always seems to come out choppy and blurry while riding. I get a much smoother and clearer video at 60. It makes a big difference on things like trees passing by while riding, it's a lot of detail to process at only 30 fps so they tend to blur out while riding down a forest road. (as an example) I've also heard/read that most people's video monitors don't even support 4k viewing, so when looking at a 4k video on a monitor that only supports 1080p is only going to give you 1080p anyway. When you gave a sample in this video comparing 1080 to what you recorded in, as a viewer online, I really didn't see any difference. If anything the 1080p pic looked sharper because it was downsized. Third, my internet is not great in my area for uploading, and may not be for others too. With DSL, my only option, I get 1 mb/s max when uploading a video, which means a 15 minute video in 1080@60 takes up to 2 days to upload, and that is if nothing goes wrong during that time and I have to start over. If I start doing 4k video it's going to take me a week to upload a single episode. I do however, understand that there are advantages because of the bitrate stuff that youtube does once you are uploaded. I've noticed when viewing a big vlogger's video in the same rez as my videos, the big vlogger's videos play clear, smooth and in higher rez than my vids do, even though they are both set for the same resolution. I'm curious if RU-vid also supports a higher throttle rate for accounts that have much higher viewing traffic. In layman's terms, your video will playback clearer to viewers if you upload higher rez, even if their monitor doesn't support it. I think I'm going to try half way and do some 2k video, but at only 30 fps and see how that goes as far as video quality, size and upload speed. Keep up the great work Ian, we always appreciate your input to the world of motovlogging! youtube.com/@baldandbiking

Very useful video. I will certainly take on board some of the tips as someone who makes lots of mistakes when Moto-vlogging. Can I just say one thing though; which is that bringing down the highlights and bringing up the shadows does NOT increase your dynamic range. IF you are lucky and don't have any clipping, you might be able to recover some detail in either the shadow, OR the highlights. BUT if you do it too much, footage will look grey and muddy.

Chin mounted Go Pro Hero 8, Purple Panda, and DaVinci Resolve are my go to tools. Go Pro 360 footage is sometimes mixed in but I have not been too happy with the GoPro 360 editing tools. To save card and hard drive space, I typically shoot at 1080p 30fps then use Davinci to upscale the final edit to 4k. I have a hard time seeing the difference between native 4k and Davinci's excellent job at upscaling.

With my Purple Panda mic and Shoei modular helmet I'm still wrestling with mic placement...In fact, using iMovie (yes, I'm a beginner), on a couple of videos, I've muted all the wind noise, and audio input, then narrated the video using the Panda plugged into the Mac. Great video! I'm trying to make some videos of my rides and document my trips, but I'm not comfortable speaking in my it, any advice for this? Btw the bloopers where very funny, how much tine did it take to make the video, like recording and editing? Thanks!
