How To Mount A Bottle Cage On Bike Without Mounting Screws/Braze-Ons

This is how to mount a bottle cage on a bike without bottle cage mount screws/braze ons, or that doesn't have the screws/braze ons where you want to mount the bottle cage. I have previously used this technique to mount a second water bottle cage on a mountain bike that only had mounts for a single water bottle cage.

Nice work. I fed 85mm of heat-shrink tubing round the mounting strip of the hose clamp prior to mounting it, looked a little tider on the dark frame I was using.

Nice trick! I figured I could use hose clamps for this, bit couldn't figure out how to attach the cage to the clamps. Beautifully simple method. Thank you!

Thanks! I originally did this on a mountain bike that I was doing a 40 mile cross country race with, but it only had mounting screws for one bottle cage. I kinda wanted a couple bottles for that distance. :)

You can get stainless steel bands intended specifically for this. They're not as easy to find these days though. Try going through vintage/retro bike people like Velo-Orange or Rivendell. They usually seek out these harder-to-find items.

Euro clamps are more friendly where the actual mechanism is.....so less damage to the tape/bike. It's the same worm gear principle but they're made so that the clamps don't gouge into the surface they serve.

Handlebar mounts are available also. I prefer them because you don't have to look down and take your eyes off the road when retirieving a bottle.

Thanks for the video. I bought a Schwinn Mirada last year and it has the mounting screws but they are on the bottom tube facing the ground, next to the pedals and the chains. This would make your water bottle nasty and dirty if you would go through a puddle or mud.

One used to be able to buy little, preformed stainless or chromed steel clamps specifically for this job. Still had a screw and a nut on the back of each clamp, but much nicer than hose clamps. Might look for them online. One problem: the clamps fit a fairly narrow diameter range. Need to have different clamps for different diameters.

I just found this, it's an old video. I wanted to see if I could make my old Raleigh Routier look a bit better, after 35 years. I actually bought a plastic mounting kit in a shop in Eindhoven about 10 years ago. I sort of neglected it for the last 2 years.

Thank ya! I’ll be doing this. My bike is now all deckt out in cool gear, but it only had the ability to hold a single water bottle. I need at least two if I’m to survive the Summer heat. Even tho it’s been mostly cool and wet out. Haha. But still, I don’t want anything to get in the way of enjoying a bike ride.

Hi shyflirt I have a bike with no cage, do most cages come with tabs projecting out if I buy it online is it pretty standard? Also thanks because life is short I'd rather have a great relationship with my bike and be adiy guy. The bike store probably charges more than an hours pay and I'll get it done in 30 minds including shopping
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 10 лет назад
Not all cages have the tabs like this. Some do, some don't. You will have to look around. Plastic ones probably won't, so look for aluminum ones. That will narrow it down some.

hey. do you have any ideas for attaching bottle holders to the underside of the frame if you have cables going there? Would like to be able to store a fuel bottle for touring on the bottom of the frame but the brake cables are in the way, just wondering if you have already thought out any solutions to this problem? Thanks.

Maybe this with some long screws and spacers: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qNLo2rIw5M8.html Maybe sure a bottle with even fit there.

thanks for the reply. I would really like to do it without drilling but i have some ideas using some plastic and cutting it the shape of the frame with holes for the cables, not sure if it will work though. good point about the space though, maybe i won't have clearance for the front wheel to turn freely.

I am editing my post because after watching the video again I can explain what I need to do better. 1st. my bottle doesn't fit on my down seat so I am going to have to place it on tube facing handle bars, hope you got that, then I do have my braze ons but I also have another piece that is not familiar anywhere. However came with kit. Help me
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 10 лет назад
I am not sure where you are talking about. If you have bottle mounts, use em. If not, you can try to mount a bottle someplace else. I mount it on the seat tube in the video. The down tube is also a common place for a bottle cage.
