hey love the content, i don't know if you are still reading these comments as it has been 5 months but i have a question. the satellite mount is metal right, and the fiberglass antenna has metal right. so does the lightning arrestor ground both of the items? do i need two different grounding rods and two different grounding wire's? i'm not trying to have lightning strike as rain season is approaching for me. hope someone could help me out, thanks.

According to the FCC documentation from Bobcat it can handle temperatures 0-60•C ~ 140•F . Makes me feel safe having it in the attic. I’m more concerned about the winter temperatures as it goes below freezing often

Connector 1 (Hotspot side) RP-SMA Male Connector 2 (Antenna/Arrester side) N Male Make sure you get more than 8' like I did. 8' is not enough and I think ill have to get a longer cable. i dont have a loop in the cable as well to prevent water leak so I'm probably going to get around 15-20'

Great video.Question, that 1 feet of ground rod which is fantastic is it enough, everyone uses 8 feet deep. And also does it needs to be a solid copper rod? This is what I had found so far. Not telling you that your installation is bad looks great. But make sure if this is correct and safe, I am also looking is very hard. I would love just to install 1 feet of ground rod but can’t find the right answer yet. Thanks for your help.
@chrisbagnell
@chrisbagnell 2 года назад
This is kind of opinion based, I live in an area with not a lot of thunderstorms and the ground is very hard to break through due to rocks. I switched to a 8 ft ground rod but only have about 3ft of it actually in the ground because of the rocks underneath the soil. It is different for everyone depending on where you live, and most homes have ground rods already that most people can just tie into.

will the mount work on a 915 902- 928 MHz outdoor helium antenna?
@bawobogo

8 feet grounding rod/pipe length is required by code to be underground. You can lay it in a trench at least 30" deep. It doesn't need to be vertical but can't be more then 45 degrees from vertical unless you lay it in a trench. NEC 250.53(G)

Did you only put one bolt on the mast mount that you put into your fascia board? I just got a mount that is 5in (pretty much the same width as my fascia board) and am debating getting 2 smaller width screws, tilting the mount (this would reduce my vertical height of the antenna by like 1/8in), or just put one bolt on the mount. Thanks!

Hey quick question, do you have to use a ground clamp or can u just like tape the grounding wire to the ground rod/pipe
@chrisbagnell
@chrisbagnell 2 года назад
It’s recommended to use a ground clamp because it is rated for the flow of electricity. Using tape could allow for the wire to come loose and fall off, they are super cheap like $2-$5

Hi Chris, I have a question, I decided to order an 8 dBi antenna, the Antenna Mounting Kit, an arrestor, a piggy tail cable with connectors. I estimated will run the LMR 400 cable on the side of the house and into a bedroom on the second floor. I calculated will need about 65-70 feet of LMR 400 cable at a $158 cost! Is there a less expensive alternative to LMR 400 cable? Thanks a million
@CallumBlacoe
@CallumBlacoe 2 года назад
That is too much cable, you will lose a lot of power which won’t be worth it. Your best bet is to buy an external enclosure for your miner and sticking that outside
@chrisbagnell
@chrisbagnell 2 года назад
Like Callum Blacoe said. You want your cable length ideally less than 10ft but 25 ft is okay. Anything above that you will start to see reduction in earnings and your signal strength will be weaker because your hotspot has to push that signal 65ft in a cable with no amplifier. I hope you'll be able to put your miner closer to your hotspot. Unfortunately sometimes you have to spend money to make money, and LMR 400 is not cheap!

What are pros and cons of connecting your hotspot via wifi instead of cat5?
@chrisbagnell
@chrisbagnell 2 года назад
The only reason I connected it via Wi-Fi is just because it is easier for me. I don't have a long enough cat5 cable and even if I did, it would be running all throughout the house. Ethernet is definitely a better option if you have the availability
@DarrylWarren1231
@DarrylWarren1231 2 года назад
Cat 5 is the old stuff, don't use it. Cat 6 or higher is your better option. More data can pass through Cat 6 and higher rated cables than Cat 5. In fact if you are currently using Cat 5 for anything upgrade it asap.

Most definitely change that grounding rod. Get an actual solid grounding rod from your nearest hardware store. They should be in 8 ft lengths and if soil feels loose when you drive it in 7 ft or so get another one with the coupler made for them and go down another 7 to 8 ft. You only need a little above ground to make and inspect your connection

@sandercassiers5163
@sandercassiers5163 2 года назад
@@chrisbagnell you have to be careful with that, as the existing rod is probably attached to the house it's electricity grounding. Lightning could potentially move back to your house via this way.. I would keep the existing electricity circuit and the lightning circuit separated.

That's not a good place to install the lightning arrestor. I'm sure it's probably too late - you already mounted the antenna. Take advice from someone that is a licensed amateur radio operator and fact check with other hams. For anyone else that hasn't done something like this.... You should connect the LMR400 directly to the antenna, then run the LMR400 coax down to the ground. Lightning needs a path straight to ground. The lightning arrestor connected directly to the antenna isn't going to accomplish anything - unfortunately. You can get a device called a Universal Copper Grounding Clamp (UCGC) made by Alpha Delta (via Ham Radio Outlet). Connect the UCGC to the top of your grounding rod and attach an Alpha Delta lightning arrestor to it. The lighting arrestor combined withe UCGC and the grounding rod allows lightning to find the ground. The Alpha Delta lightning arrestors have a field replaceable gas-filled capsule that breaks when it gets hit with lightning. You want that to happen as it ensures the electrical charge doesn't make it into your hotspot. Then run an additional length of LMR400 from the other side of the lightning arrestor to the Helium hotspot. Make sure you use some coax seal tape, cover it with heat shrink tubing, then go over the top of the heat shrink tubing with liquid rubber electrical tape. Great intentions - not the most ideal execution.
