How to Name a Color - Crafting Original Characters for RWBY 

"The Color Rule has to apply to first *and* last name!" *Stares in James Ironwood, Pyrrha Nikos, Cardin Winchester, Elm Ederne, Marrow Amin, Klein Sieben, Scarlet David, Sage Ayana and Vine Zeki) The Color Name Rule is really fun and honestly one of my favorite parts of making an OC is coming up with a name that matches the Vibe I want for a character *and* the associated color I have in mind, but while many characters do have a color in both their first and last name, it is not a requirement that *both* names have some sort of color association. Trust me, when you spend so long doing being the Name Guy that you end up creating a spreadsheet of over 1800 color-name-compliant names, you tend to notice a pattern or three in canon.

Honestly I think this is one of the most fun aspects of making RWBY OCs, especially when the color actually has meaning in how it relates to the characters' backstory/personality

The color struggle is real. You will spend an unknown amount of time on named unless you get it easy then congrats.

The best thing about this rule is that Monty has created a unifying experience for many RWBY fan writers creating teams and characters. I don't know if I can speak for everyone, but I also have spent countless hours searching through the colour wiki, translating colors through different languages, finding different alternatives, combining, separating and mixing words and I'm sure many others as well.

When i first read the color naming rule when redesigning one of my old rwby oc teams my brain exploded because despite how easy I thought it would be to name characters after colors and teams after colors, you realize you have to get creative with the names and perform tons of research on names that follow the color rules. (Basically it gets really easy to get confused and stuck on trying to name characters after colors etc, etc.) That said here is my first revision of one of my rwby teams; Team REGL (Regal) "Royal colors like royal purple etc." Radek Rust: colors, reds, reddish-browns (Czech and Slovak origin) Eryk Noir: colors, dark royal purples with blacks (Norse origin) Gwen Noir: colors, whites with black (Polish origin) Lilith Genesis: colors, blacks and midnight blues (Jewish origin) Tell me what you think!

Only way around this, characters who are either born in, or live in the time before the great war. Hence my very elderly OC, and even then, he's heavily influenced by Greek myth, and has a marble white and silver color schema to still abide by the rule.

I always thought Lie in Lie Ren was his last name and sence he is based on mulan the family name is said first and given names second.

Yeah I realized names can be anywhere from really thought out or really simple. Out of all my oc's, the intricacies of them vary heavily

I am good at finding color references for any names. Color allusions with Salem, ozma and ozpin. Oz means deer (browns, white) + pin means ‘dwellers of the pine tree’ which is green. Salem is another name for rosemary which has purple flowers (and green needles). Ozma can derive from ‘osmanthus’ which is a plant with white flowers and green leaves (sometimes other colors like orange and yellow).

When naming my OC I wanted the color name to have tons of significance so I went with Cawlan Burroughs. Cawlan is a rough translation of grey in Somali and my character is based on Tarzan of the apes who’s real name was John Clayton 3rd earl of Greystroke and his Faunus trait making him a silverback gorilla. As for his last name the author of Tarzan was Edgar Rice Burroughs.

The "something that makes you think of a color" thing seems really vague. I feel like any word could potentially make someone think of a color

My OC's name is Rei Solaris. Rei being Ray, which is light and light has colors. Solaris, well, solaris from sonic, the sun god. And Solaris has darkness within him despite being light (Mephiles the Dark), relates to the backstory of Rei growing up in a chaotic place and his violent/dark side deep down Semblance: danger boost, increase strength and speed depends on how much danger Rei recognize, key word RECOGNIZE, which means if he was off guard or didn't see the attacks coming, it doesn't activate. tier 1 being normal, tier 2 being "this might hurt", tier 3 being "I might lose", tier 4 being "this is really bad", tier 5 being "if I don't do something, I will die" team member being Duke (duke blue)(last name undecided), semblance: pumper, Duke needs to stand still and puts his arm in a up-side-down L shape and punch downward to increase the striking power of his next attack. Ashe (ash gray)(last name undecided), semblance undecided Tealle (teal)(last name undecided), semblance: color calling, Tealle has to call a color both she and her enemy currently has every minute, then both Tealle and the enemy can only damage each other on areas with that certain color. it works like this, if 90% of Tealle's body was covered by yellow, then her attacks will be massively stronger than it is supposed to be, but the same goes with the enemy, if they hit her in the yellow area, she will receive a lot more damage than what it's supposed to cause team name being radiant (RDAT), because anything related to radiation reminds me green

this rule in regards to teams is either easy as hell or a living hell, if you have the team name already, easy as shit, if you have the character names 1st however it can be painful, the biggest streach i had for a team name was team SIDD, team Acid

Well. I didn't even know about the rule of color and my OC accidentally fulfilled it. Nathan Grenadilla. Nathan is a Hebrew name meaning 'gift', and most of us would associate a gift with colorful wrappers, parties, etc. Grenadilla is a type of blackwood used in the manufacture of some musical instruments, like the clarinet. So it references both a visual color (blackwood), and color within the context of music (musical notes and chords).

Phew, I was beginning to wreck my brain over the names having to be based on colors. The fact, that I can go as far as just referencing something, that has a very distinctive color makes this so much easier. Also, in the design process, I have so far always started with a weapon and associated fighting style (because I am quite great at cooking up those inside my head and I really enjoy playing around with imaginary, versatile weapons) and went from there, thinking up the semblance, that would be most useful to have with such a weapon and then thinking of the character, who would have and use all of these. The hardest part in all of this, for me, is the final piece in the puzzle, which is the character's backstory, since I have not quite kept track of how the various kingdoms look and function on a grander scale.

The color naming rule is such an interesting challenge for writing OCs but its spawned some amazing characters for me.

I’ve made a lot of OC’s so far, all of them followed this naming rule. However, you explaining it makes it 1000% easier to understand and do. Especially for my side characters. You’re awesome man!

I thankfully found a way to work around the rule if i have to but it also help to differentiate between how comes from the kingdoms and who doesn’t.

I think the hard part for me when coming up with making an original character would be either the weapon or giving the character itself a backstory, which is something I sometimes struggle with, even with more original stories. But I always have lots of fun with it. 👀

I'm glad someone actually went more in depth on the naming rules. I'd take a random colour, then go with the naming. (I.e. "Ivory". I.V.R.Y). There is something about the concept, that is quite compelling. Also, I think they used Lie Ren's "R", due to the naming of other countries. Like in Japan, they use the family name, followed by the first name. (Son Goku as an example)

Had found your channel a few days ago. But yeah, I do enjoy the Color naming rule and really the most fun and the implications implied behind them. Though team names are a drag, but a good exercise is by getting the color names and mad gab them to condense or cut off parts to make a Team acronym. (Kinda cheat sometimes by using Last names too at times…)

Can confirm that the naming is one of the hardest parts of this whole thing, I had a team theme figured out, and got the general semblances, weapons and colours but the naming part took to longest to finagle with and especially looking up colors and synonyms for various words the make a name that would sound good

I came up with a name first, and developed my OC around it. Chrys Flowers Chryso means Gold, and Flowers brings many colours to mind, but "chrys flower" is another name for the Chrysanthemum. With that name in mind, I thought of vivid yellow hair, with strands of various other colours(matching the known colours of chrysanthemums), a verdant green armoured dress, and a semblance that absorbs sunlight to augment herself. Maybe not the most unique OC idea, but it's mine

I wasn't aware that both the first and the last name needed you to think of a color. When I made my OC team I only focused on one or the other. It's too late to change their names now as I've written way to much of my story to justify changing their names. I did try to be creative though. Sapphire Zhūwǎng : last name is Chinese for arachne Leon Hyacinthus: last name is latin for the Hyacinth flower. The flower comes in many colors but I was focusing on the yellow one. Akari Sugiraito: last name is Japanese for sugilite which is a pink/purple crystal. Mai Ruyeppelya: last name is Russian for Rueppell for the Rueppell fox which are silver grey in color (and she is a fox faunus). Instead of the first letter of the first name for the team name I used the first letter of the last names. They form team SHRZ which is German for black. I tried to keep the color rule as much as I could and I probably took a light liberty with the team name using only the first letter of the last name but I think it still works.

honestly glad that i realized that the color had to be with both names..i never got around to fully developing them, but when i tried to make a ruby oc for a group of friend's oc team, i named him Cerise Coral, both pink colors.

I loved the naming but the thing that got me with my OCs wasn’t the names or anything but the stories behind the characters, that inspired them. I can’t really have that because my current OC was inspired by the idea of “What if a faunus had their faunus trait in the form of eyes” as in like big irises and vertically elongated pupils. And the other characters were just their teammates that I made to work off each other.

I had to rework my whole OC team, but your videos really helped. This is what I have now: Erin Forrester (Erin being a shade of green, Forrester referring to the forest. Based off the woodcutter from Red Riding Hood) Bianca Azure (Bianca is Italian for white and Azure is a shade of blue. Based off Arthurian legends) Neli Sirena (Neli is derived from carnelian and Sirena is Spanish for mermaid. Based off of Little Mermaid) Yale Iliad (Yale is a shade of blue and Iliad references the Greek Isles, therefore connecting it to the sea. Based off of Odysseus) Team EBNY (basically based off of several European tales) I hope I didn’t miss any of the criteria. This is such a struggle for myself as well for the fanfic I am currently writing. Now that I know there's an actual naming rule, and a layout for me to follow, I think this might make it slightly easier. I've always loved the name Ryker. It's got a nice, sharp sound to it. Ryker Arkanni is what I have for right now. Arkanni is a placeholder until I have something a bit more inspired (and I honestly just thought it sounded cool, lol). If anyone happens to read this, feel free to drop a suggestion. :)

I mentioned in one of your previous videos that there are aspects of my characters that prevent them from fitting into canon, like Rayna being a dragon Faunus, or Lucius having an "All-for-one" semblance. But I at least kept to the naming scheme in some way. Rayna's name is phonetically the same as "La Reina" or Queen in Spanish, and Purple is a color associated with royalty. Cian's name is based on Cyan, since it's his color scheme and also the color his eyes become when his semblance is in use (they're normally a light green). I also learned recently that Cian is an actual Irish name, which fits since Cian is inspired (albeit loosely) by Cú Chulainn, a figure of Irish lore. Gilderoy's name comes from the word "Gilded" or the act of coating something in Gold leaf, since his inspiration is King Midas, who in all versions of the story is given the ability to turn anything he touches into gold. (And Gilderoy's sister is associated with Gold because her name is Audrey; Au being the Atomic symbol for Gold) Lucius has probably the weakest connection to a color. His full name of Lucius Feroh connects him to Lucifer, and demons are often portrayed as red. I say it's the weakest because in my fanfic AU, his family is one of the few that try to resist the naming scheme (I haven't ironed out the reasoning for it yet, but I'm working on it).

Never knew about this. But I took a couple of characters I made for my own story and since i am a artist first and for most i wanted to put them into a RWBY look and with weapons fitting RWBY. The Characters' names aren't based on colors but the team is kinda. The names are Zagen, Haran, Eido, and Scyreis. The team is "ESHZ" which me and my co-writer/worker pronounce "ashes" which is a color. So yeah XD just thought this was a fun thing to share 😅

Seriously, the naming rule is the hardest part when it comes to making RWBY OCs. When I was making my characters, I legitimately spend over a week up thinking up names that followed the rule accordingly.

With the enlightenment of that both parts of the name have to follow the Color Naming convention I at first though it would be hard but with enough fiddling around I found something that actually worked out in a hilarious manner.

Me and my friends have been putting a team together. Similar to you, we were also inspired by Greek mythology, though we're using monsters, and other supernatural entities exclusively. So far, we only have one complete character, being mine. His name is Aureus Moirai. Aureus, being Latin for auburn, and Moirai being another name for the three fates of Greek mythology. Technically speaking, his full name translates to Auburn Fate.

I think the most difficult roadblock I have experienced is making a weapon that goes in harmony with the clothing and/or semblance of the character. I have a team (made together with my siblings and cousin) which is based off elements that describe "outer space" in general so they consists of (in no particular order) Cirrica Fleuri, Sentrion Alarum, Perisus Deimos, Equinus Shio (or Xi) (my character).

This will be abundantly helpful in the development of RWBY: Viewpoint!

12:26 Actually, this has been deconfirmed by Kerry Shawcross in a reddit AMA for one of the books (I think Roman Holiday): The rule only applies to one name. As long as one name satisfies it, the other can be literally anything.

I think I finally have my character's name finished. Well, i'm down to the last couple options to decide from. I went through several stages of turmoil on it though. I think the hardest part was picking something that didn't seem "lazy" or super "common". After combing google translate for a couple hours and a site that provides meanings to names, I finally decided to settle on "Akane" for her first name. Turns out that name means "dark/deep red" My character has dark red hair. As for the last name, I'm still debating a couple options. This is where the next stage of my turmoil settled in though; I didn't want the last name to pull from Japanese origin as well. Seems like too much of a cop out to go with a full name that is Japanese or any one language. So then I spent a large amount of time searching again with small changes each time until I found some options that sound decent enough. The other part of the problem is that just because the name fits the character as shown in present day, doesn't mean that name would make sense at birth. "Akane" fits because of my characters distinct hair color, but at birth, that character would have no hair and thus that name wouldn't make the connection at first. However, "Akane" is still a valid name regardless of any color rules, so it still fits as a good name. And as she grows her hair, the color rule fits into place. Her last name is going to follow the rule of course, and in her case, will be based on her fire semblance. (Again, haven't decided for sure yet) But yeah, this was certainly the hardest part.

In the RWBY D&D game I'm in, we have had so many NPCs from Vacuo that were named after plants that it just kind of became a trend that Vacuo born people were named after plants. How this happened might have had something to do with our DM and myself. My insect faunus was named Sage Fuego. He never actually went by that name because he was separated from his parents when he was young but that was his birth name. Instead he goes by Zilar Rekkr. Funny enough, it does mean silver warrior. He does have silver eyes but in the campaign we mainly have it as silver eyes are a recessive gene. We've worked around the canon information so everything is explainable. Including the genetic lottery. Although, I find the idea of cat + Insect = fish to be highly entertaining especially when it causes our DM a headache XD

The case could be made for Lie Ren and May Zedong that they still follow the "first letter of the first name" rule. Lie Ren and Zedong are chinese names, and chinese names are actually Western naming conventions tend to westernise the order and flip them so technically, Lie (given name) Ren (surname) would be written as Ren Lie in chinese. When written this way, the surname is the "first" name. Same with Zedong, though for people with chinese and english words in the names, the naming convention is often written as .

One of my biggest challenges was making the character names coincide with the desired team acronyms while also wanting to keep the desired colors for each color.

With my OC, Turquo Mauve. It was easy for his first name since I based it of my eye colour but shorten it. As for the last name, it was rather hard. I searched for a suitable name that I liked, but finally stumbled upon Mauve another term for purple. I wasn’t sure at the time but decided to follow the colour rule for my weapons; Saphrald a harp and Fire for six-shot revolver.

The naming rule I actully find to be really hard since I had already names picked out for two of my characters. As some one who is part of many fandoms I have a couple of OCs that I work into the world somehow always retaining the same name and general apperance. So having to come up with new names is actually kinda hard cause I have grown attached to the names of Soren and Alistar.

I was actually able to come up with a name for my OC, because I saw your characters, and the fact that they were based on Greek mythology, and while I didn't exactly incorporate the myth part into it, I looked for different names that mean purple. I came up with Hyacinth. I'm still looking for a Greek last name for him. I'm thinking about using the Greek word for black, but I'm not sure. Not to mention that I still need to come up with three other team members. It's going to be fun

I once made an OC team called Vanilla (VNLA): Violet Reach Nick Coppers Lauren Crest Alice Hearts (Sadly, only Alice actually has some inspiration coming from outside of Remnant (Alice in Wonderland), the others don't)

I've made two teams already, and I've found that making the team name first helps. Figure out a name and get the members' names from there.

I just feel like dropping my team here. Petunia Violette - purple Olivia Pearl - white Lucas Azure - blue Travis Dearg - red Their team name is VOLT. (The colour association is yellow) I know that there names don't fully align with the colour naming rule but I tried my hardest and to me each name dose reminded me of a colour.

As someone who loves color theory and name meaning? Believe me this isn’t an easy in practice. On paper or theory? Easy. In practice? Not easy. Also? I’m so glad last names is an option. It’s why I stuck to gemstone/metals when making my teams. As for the story basis? Strong unsung leads for the girls & zodiac members for the guys. Though the tricky part for me? Writing out fight scenes. I can make weapons, form semblances, build characters but when it comes to describing fights or landscapes? Yeah I struggle there

My RWBY character is a wolf Faunus named Sterling, but I was planning to make his team represent two things. Those two things are: Fairy Tale Villains and Norse Mythology.

The fanbase made a giant fucking spreadsheet with over 1600 potential color names. It’s useful, but it puts into perspective how limited naming can be. The “makes-you-think-of-a-color” rule makes this a bit easier, at least.

The most difficult part for me is figuring out which colour to use for the Team Acronym, so I've started doing two things, the first is designing characters and keeping note of them if I can't find a Team/Colour for them, and the second is make the Team Acronym first and find colours and names to fit it, because I don't(or at least very rarely) have the colour play an important part of the character(I know I should, and I might start doing so when my current process gets easier/faster), currently the only character whose colour is important is Mars(haven't given her a last name yet), as her colour is red thinking going to have her team be named for the planets/celestial bodies.

Color names and team was easy for me but finding a fairytale/myth/legend to match and/or inspire is hard for me like right now I got Team name MINT and the leader name Mia (me-ah) Blackwood which Mia means either sea of bitterness or star of sea and others but sea can equal dark blue which ties in with Blackwood (even though its close resembling Ironwood but it sound most fitting with Mia) being use for the word black which is the darkest color. After countless tries of finding myth/legend/fairytale, I come up with Maia, Hermes mother and daughter of Atlas and Pleione the Oceanid soo the backstory would be Mia originally live in Atlas but then move to Mistral

My OC team is team IDC(S)T (Iridescent) led by Iradessa Loyolar, a winged snowy egret faunus who is more supportive over aggressive in combat. I'm still working on the rest of her team.

My OCs name is Clyde Macro. I didn't really have a colour relation to his first name when I made it up 😅. Although the word macro reminds me of a macro lens used in photography, and I thought that his semblance relates to his name because the semblance involves the use of his eyes.

Also here’s an idea for anyone whom wishes to try it. Make a team based on the argonauts. I’m not the best when it comes to ideas and writing for this kind of thing, so might as well allow others to enjoy the idea.

One detail about Character creation that seems to be ignored (even by the RWBY Producers), is that RWBY characters are based on a character from an existing piece of media, or that characters within a same team share a common element in their character basis: Team RWBY are all based on Grimm Fairy Tales characters (R.R. Hood, Snow White, The Beauty and Goldilocks) Team JNPR are all based on people who crossdressed at one point in their lives (Jeanne d'Arc, Thor, Achiles and Hua Mulan) Can be a character from a fairy tail, a myth or even a historical figure, but most RWBY characters are based on another figure.

I've have one OC who follows the color naming rule his name is Lucis Cyan Kresnik Lucis meaning "of the Light " it's the genitive singular form of the Latin word lux which means light cyan is lietlery a color cyan having many shade's of blue and Kresnik is based off the name of the Slavic god associated with fire the summer solstice and storms so his name means light blue fire or if you want to be poactic about it could also mean light of the blue flame so tell me what you think if this is good enough or needs work
