THE NUMBER 1 RULE OF BUYING A MOTORCYCLE IS NEVER BE AFRAID TO WALK AWAY IF THE DEAL ISNT RIGHT FOR YOU.

Yes indeed, otherwise they have near total control of negotiations. There is ALWAYS another bike out there. Top advice 👍👍

Agree completely. This rule applies to cars/trucks too. Every time I have walked away from the deal they have come back with a better deal, doesn’t mean I took it cause it still might not be right, but don’t let them force you into a deal that’s not good for you.

Number 1 rule fir buyin anything.......I believe Sean is straight up dude but salesman at dealerships, lol......cars, trucks, bikes doesn't matter, have fair price and if no walk away, go to next.....if your too low nobody will bite so has to be price people have paid for them.....

Fantastic review. I've bought and sold over 50-60 cars/trucks/MCs in my life and when I finally, about 25 years ago, settled on the concept of win-win, both buyer-seller happy, my own happiness increased much. It came about by studying Stoicism. Realizing that I can't read someone's mind so don't presume to know motive. Simply be fair for my own good. Life is so much simpler.

4:25 In a private party sale, it makes a lot of sense to ask for a completely firm price, and it makes a ton of sense as a buyer to pay that completely firm price, if everyone's asking $5,000 for a bike, it's really worth $4,600, and that "firm" price you found is for $4,400. That firm price is discounted a couple percent below market value without you even having to ask for it because the seller just happens to be a very fair person who doesn't want to field phone calls for 3 weeks. Firm deals are in many cases, the most fair deals you can find. You just need to make sure you know market value.

Mr. Sparkes ... why would you get a "losing feeling" like Vegas when you walk into a dealership?. You must be buying Harley Davidson because.. .Japanese manufactures artificially depress the retail value of their bike in the USA Japanese manufacturer own their own bank and off buyers 0 percent financing Japanese manufactures offer 130% financing of the retail price of the bike Japanese manufactures offer 5 year unlimited mileage warranty

Road out to a honda dealership in springfield, MO last night to get a trade value and check out the used bike they had, which was a good deal - turns out they have all the used bikes sitting out in an open awning and they are filthy. Then we start talking prices and the same guy who told me the listed price was the OTD price, tells me that there are some fees for them having *checked*(rather than changed) the fluids and chain when it rolled into the dealership months ago. They wanted another $160 just to check, NOT CHANGE, the fluids. Then they wanted a "maintenance fee" of $200 for keeping it clean. I guess water spots, crusty dirt and gummed up chain is the new definition of clean. They wanted to value my bike for $1500 under the NADA low value that they claimed they went by on their website and reviews. I physically laughed out loud and left. What a joke. 260 mile trip for a bunch of BS, will never do it again. Froze my ass off during that ride, so I learned multiple lessons. Thanks, Honda of the Ozarks!

Only other advice I’ve learnt over the years is that we generally don’t wake up in the morning and say ‘I’m gonna trade my bike today’. Normally we know in a little while we’ll be trading and start looking around. Keep an eye on the bikes that aren’t moving. Then when you’re ready you’ve got an instant hit list of bikes that have been sitting at a dealer a couple of months. It’s hit and miss. Generally I find 2/3 times it’s because the photos are overly flattering and they’ve had months of people rocking up and thinking ‘oh.’, but about a third of the time the ad’s as accurate as any other and it’s a good place to start. But as the video says don’t be a dick & rock up like ‘I know you can’t sell this bike, so you’ll sell it to me for half’, be nice, polite have a chat about the bike, and make them an offer. As is always the way, if they say no, just walk. If you’re too invested in a bike you haven’t bought yet yoy’re Not getting a good deal. Bikes are mass produced and most models you have a lot of options. If the dealer will cut a deal, take it, if not, try to understand why and try somewhere else so long as the reason isn’t ‘my expectations are ludicrous’ Great vid though. TBH one of the reasons 80% of my bikes have come from dealers is that it’s usually easy to find a dealer that will deal whilst private sellers are more often a total PITA.

If a dealer offers a bike for a certain price then adds "Dealer prep" or whatever add-ons they can come up with...what the hell is dealer prep other then a way to jack up an already stated price, anyway?

Thanks for the insight Sean. Perhaps one point for buyers is to be familiar with your local dealer. Have a look around now and again, buy something from them like chain lube (unless you’ve got a shaft drive😁) or riding gear. Someone once said to me ‘It’s nice to be nice’. Regards, Bob M.

99.99% of Dealerships won't give you what Bluebook value is for your trade in and that's what gets my goat. I left a place once due to being low balled by $500 less than what the Bluebook value was. I mean, why bother even having a Bluebook value on ANYTHING if it's not adhered to? I ended up getting my trade in value met AND got a better deal on the bike I wanted at another dealership. Bottom line, if you're not satisfied and the dealership isnt willing to work with you GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!

I've been trying to buy a new dirt bike with cash. Its been incredible how rude the dealerships have been. I went to a dealership that Ive bought 3 bikes from and they wouldn't come off 1 dollar on a left over 2020 model. Its been very annoying and made we not want to buy from them ever again. They keep hitting me with the well there is no inventory but the bikes been on the floor for 45 days. Im driving out of the state to buy if no one local wants to make a sell.

I rarely pay what a seller is asking, but I have never left someone feeling like they shouldn't have sold it to me. There's a point where I save as much as I can, but when you can see the seller starting to get to the point of just telling you to leave, you're probably going past the good deal point to "Get the heck of my property!" Haha. Good points.

As a salesman in a different industry: this is probably the only video that I’ve seen that is spot on :) well done sir. I’d like to add that nobody needs to be an A-hole even if you decide to walk away. It’s ok to not meet on a price… if you are not ok walking away, pay the asking price.

I had a guy look at a bike I had for sale once. He was such a jerk I told him to get off of my property. He then offered me what I had asked for the bike . I said "I guess you didn't hear me. Last week I walked out of a motorcycle dealership because of the ridiculous price they tried to sell me the motorcycle. It was a 2012 Kawasaki Vulcan 900 for $3850. Great price until the sales guy says he’s going to run some numbers and came back with a $5950 price. $2100 on top of the original price. I was so shocked I didn’t even look at the breakdown. I know it he added sales tax, assembly fee, document fee, and all this crap. What is mind-boggling to me is that in this country they actually make you finance all these charges. Talk about bend over event. these charges should not even be added until the very end. you should not finance a document fee, or an assembly fee, etc. On top of that they came back with the 18% interest rate. The dealership was RideNow Motorsports. Crazy!

problem with this advice, it's all good, but it assumes the dealership/sales know what they are doing. I was looking to buy a specific Triumph model, but not a specific year, or whether a show room, or used version. There was 3 at the dealership, with prices all over the place. I called ahead, set-up a test ride, new the prices ahead, but confused as to why the used '17 version was priced higher than the 'new 18 model, while the '19 model had a dealer incentive. The sales person had no idea of any of it. What I wanted to be maybe an hour or two to figure out the best deal, this bloke wasted an hour of time to come back with MSRP prices that were not even from the website. I said, no way am I gonna waste a saturday while you figure out what serial numbers are worth whatever. Told him to email prices. He followed up with a text message if I was still interested. no prices, no specifics. fack you.

Most Harley Dlrs want full MSRP, freight & anywhere from $999 - $2100 Mark up or dealer prep. (same thing) here in So Cal. They will negotiate some, but want to hit home run with every sale. I've bought 3 new HD's but went out of state to smaller dealers for more reasonable deals on 2 of 3 bikes. I understand how HD sales are dropping year after year. Other factors like, aging demographic and millennials not buying cruisers factor in. I've always had more pleasurable experience buying Japanese bikes with discounts off MSRP, no freight or set up.

My main gripe with dealerships are bait and switch tactics. I typically email or call dealerships first prior to driving 50 plus miles and ask about specific bikes and ask if there is any room for negotiation on the price. If they say yes then if I go there they better be willing to wiggle. However some dealerships I've found bait you in and the say we wont budge (Cough BMW Motorcycles of Long Beach cough)

I just did that, we negotiated my trade in for their bike, everything was good, the salesman from Woodstock Harley Davidson mike morgan asked me if I’ve earned his business , and I said yes I’ll be in tomorrow, when I got there he and his corrupt finance guy sal said some one put money down on the bike this morning, I got to their lot at 10:38 he left me a voice mail at 10:45 bs, we agreed , that that bike would be mine yesterday, he never asked me for money to secure the bike, so I guess he thought I wouldn’t say anything, wrong, he basically already ran my credit for a new bike, had all the same numbers on my trade in, but for a new bike, so he attempted a bait and switch tactic, and what makes matters worse is the the owner Bill Nugent didn’t come out to correct the bad tactic, so he had to know, they called the cops on us because they said we were unruly, no we were loud and pissed off, they had no honest answers. Crooked Harley dealers ship in NY. Stay away! Great video man👍

Typically actually buying the bike or car, especially at a dealership, takes all the fun out of a normally exciting, happy experience. So many salespeople are slime balls. You seem like a good person to buy through. I am older and have purchased a few cars and bikes. My technique is to receive an out the door price over the phone. I want to be in and out of the dealership in 30 minutes not 3 hours. Start all the paperwork so all you need is a signature. I usually pay cash or have financing from somewhere else to speed the process. Glad to hear your sales people do not work on commissions. Some larger dealerships are switching over to that model to make purchasing faster and a good experience.

Agree 100%. I've sold a few vehicles over the years, and it always pisses me off when a potential buyer says, "I'll talk it over with my wife and get back to you." I mean, if you can't make that decision on your own, why are you wasting my time?

I found a bike I really wanted all done up 2014 Harley Davidson fxdb at a car dealership for 8999 when I contacted to pretty much try and seal the deal on the purchase they ended up selling the bike a couple days prior . I found the exact same bike from that dealership up for sale at another car dealership for 15999 lol. My question is do you think it’s possible to get that price lowered .

Probably the most important piece of advice I give people is: "Be willing to walk out empty-handed." If you throw a number at a dealer and he absolutely won't budge, you HAVE to walk out. If you stick around after you've made your "final offer" and it gets rejected, that dealer has you by the throat.

I agree 100%. I made that mistake when I bought a new car. Years later I went though the same thing and walked away. 2 days later the salesman call me and I told him I had bought from somewhere else. That was so sweet !!

I agree! Times have changed and places like Carmax are pushing “no haggle pricing” which is a rip off. However calling and negotiating over the phone is huge!! Just like you said you don’t waste anyone’s time and usually when you’re persistent they will give in in the moment

A dealer in Las Vegas advertised a new bike for a grand under what list price had been plus dealer costs, ($3,599 for a Yamaha TW200). I called and said I am an hour away so before I drive for two hours there and back, I want to know the out the door price. It was $5,600. A $2,000 mark up. I saved myself a two hour drive. Now I know the price still wasn't bad, but it upset me that they would bait me with an artificially low list price.

The best advice I can give to ANYONE reading this is DON'T DO BUSINESS WITH BOB'S BMW IN MARYLAND!! Theyre a bunch of crooks, if you bring them a trade in theyll practically tell you your entire bike needs overhauling. Meanwhile it just had a recent Pa inspection and had no discrepancies. Bottom line they absolutely SUCK! The "technician" who said my rotors were out of tolerances didn't even have calibrated calipers, AND THIS WAS A PLACE THAT DID STATE INSPECTIONS!!!

I agree, if it is a used bike, telling the salesman/seller that there is another bike at another dealership that is less money has zeeeero bearing on the bike in front of you. However, if it is a New bike and you have an actual WRITTEN Agreement, then that is a completely different story, and you can show the current salesman/manager the WRITTEN Agreement and make a better deal for yourself, if there is any more room in the deal and they want to actually take that deal.

Advice on buying a new bike from a dealer?
@joetortoriello9306

Hey guys, I'm wondering if you guys can help me out. California as of model year 2022 is no longer registering off road vehicles as red sticker. This is a problem not only because every competitive dirt bike (90 percent) would be registered red sticker but also because they have not even finished writing legislation for how these current red sticker emission bikes should be registered. It's a shit show. So, for example, currently you cannot register any MX bikes AT ALL. Of course, being new to california, and finally having the funds to buy my dream bike, this bullshit happens and I can not longer ride practically any bike on any california public soil... I am wondering if you guys can reach out to me privately and potentially do a dealer backend bike search for me. Either a 2021 250cc KTM xc-w or a 250cc Husqvarna te250i. And let me know which dealers have these bikes still (if any) in california. I APPRECIATE YOU GUYS AND YOUR VIDEOS!!!

I'll add a copy/paste of a question/comment I shared on Sean's 6 dealership things to watch out for, circa 2018. Thought I'd ask over here......"Old video, I know. However, question is....with new or used bike, is cash still king? I'm fortunate to not have to finance (anymore!). With vehicles, cash is no longer king, they WANT you to finance so they can get more outta you with finance charges. Appreciate any response! Thanks for all your videos, Sean!"

What if I tell them I'm going to finance the bike, have them give me the total price and breakdown then go in and pay the total with a check instead of financing with them? Would the price be lowered compared to if I told them I'm paying cash? MSRP is $8,599 and the total is $12,528. Am I paying too much? I know there's taxes and assembly fees.

Ive seen plenty of bikes when looking around to buy and my biggest pet peeves is this. I can't stand it when someone is trying to sell their 5yr old bike for what they paid for it when it was new. Just because you put on a new chain and change the oil doesnt mean its value goes up 1,000 bucks. Why would I spend my hard earned money on your crappy old bike when i can just get it new? You just want to get your money back in full to rebuy the same bike but new like some recycling scheme.

Dickheads are the biggest turn around for me. I think most functional people can agree they don’t want anything to do with people who are ducks for no reason. I’ve walked away from many a transaction because I didn’t like the other guys attitude. The next one down for me is acting like you know more than you actually. That drives me nuts. But don’t be a dick! Number one thing not to do

I have this issue.. i CANT negotiate. I simply can not do it. lots of background stuff that is the cause for it... but i simply can not do it. When i see a price listed for a car, a bike, a watermelon... that IS the price to me. I purchased a Tacoma a few years ago, new off the lot, i paid exactly what the sticker was(and all those lovely fees and taxes of course). All the bikes i have purchased so far(all from dealers) i paid what the initial asking price was. This has led me to do a TON of more research before i make those buying choices though, i will look at way more options i have before i pick something. Even then i will of course kick the tires so to speak before pulling the trigger.... and hand them exactly what they were asking for it. So i generally know i am getting at least a good deal, or paying around average for that item.

First motorcycle I actually bought distance did get me a discount, but the guy and I worked that out beforehand. Was asking $2k, I asked if he'd go lower just since I needed to travel for it, so he lowered it to $1800. Well he ended up having something come up to where he would be busy over the weekend, lowered the price to $1600 if I could come get it that day. So in a way we both negotiated in my favor lol.

I have one Kawasaki Voyager. & vaquero Looking into purchasing a particular bike 2 different models available two dealers have a used 2017 version at $11999(3500 miles) & 12999(1750miles) The lower end model 2019 used with 150 miles at oanother dealerships $13999🤔🤬 Same model up top serval hours several dealerships 2019 new 14999🤬🤔 Same features on both models except one has a trunk. I do not understand how these dealers are pricing used bikes with a low mileage so close to the price when they were new or a few hundred dollars less than new bikes!

The best way to deal with someone on the bike they are selling is for the buyer to be honest. If the bike is a bad deal, walk away! If the bike is a good deal, tell the guy. He may give you a better price if you are nice rather than knocking the guy's bike down. Another person to look for is a guy who bought a new bike and needs to sell his older bike. Or if the guy is looking for a new bike to buy he will be hungry for money and get desperate or anxious.
