Oh my god, the way you describe lessons in stories is basically how it works in real life. Of course characters learn lessons over and over in different ways, people do that in real life all the time. We come up against our limitations until we find a way through or around or over them. LIFE LESSONS AND REAL TALK WITH BONES.

The comparison of scenes and the end of the story to classes and a final test is now my favorite writing hack! Thank you! :)

so I was planning on doing subtle storytelling and just made a little extra set of info pages with background knowledge in my comic.... and then my mom who reads my comic complained that one week's page was way shorter than any of the others so far. So I posted that extra thing probably a bit too early. I guess it might get people more interested in my comic, or it might dissuade people from reading past all the text.... aaahh

I think that page was okay since you marked it as non-essential; even if people skip over it, they can always come back to it if they really wanna know :] (also, hi again :D)

Hiyaaa :”) I’m glad it still got across that it wasn’t 100% necessary to read the info dump haha

my way of telling a viewer a bunch of info. is make that info important to them so they want to hear it. teachers teach, kids that want to learn. The format is the icing on the cake

At the end I think you were admitting to doing an info dump about how not to do an info dump! haha. I love the practical lessons you have to share. Thank you for making these videos!. Your general impressions of your lessons are fantastic. However your in-depth discussions need some honing. You wander all over the place. This is the first of 5 videos of yours that I've gotten through. I'm trying to be constructive, yet direct. Every one of your topics I've seen about writing comics reels me in and I'm anxious to learn what you have to say. But then when you present it in such a disorganized manner that it starts to become confusing to me. Your lesson plan is all over the place. Do you have notes in front of you when you make these videos? Or do you do it totally extemporaneously? I think you need to gather and present your thoughts in a more easy to understand lesson so I may learn of your wisdom! You're starting with abstract concepts and you kind of keep them too abstract to grasp. I think solidifying your thoughts with metaphors would help (at least me). So here are possible metaphors for the awesome concept of info dump review: - The chorus of a song. Or better yet, the 12 days of Christmas -- everyday you add a new gift and give copies of the previous days' gifts as well (?) - Have you ever seen how to make a candle? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-L8P-zyw-ryo.html If you dip a wick into the wax over and over again, you still have the previous wax underneath. When you review your story, you need to include the previous information in a similar manner. - When I train people at my day job, I use what i call the "yellow brick road method." We start at the beginning of the spiral and we venture out. I give them the simple parts of the lesson first. I tell them to follow the yellow brick road, but I don't tell them about the pitfalls ahead. As they get comfortable on their path of discovery, I add more information, fine tuning, and eventually the pitfalls. Then they are more capable to understand and anticipate the road ahead. But every leg of the journey they will still need to be reminded where we came from to get to this point on the yellow brick road. What I try to do with each scene when writing my comic strips is to include context | goals | conflict | resolution as per Tim Stout - timstout.wordpress.com/2011/09/03/how-to-use-3-act-story-structure-in-comic-strips/ I know this is a comic strip, but if you break down any scene of any story, these are the steps when done properly. And the dipping of the wax and the story review come into play so much more as the story continues. I hope these tips were helpful. And thanks again for posting these videos!

Thank you so much for all of your guys' videos. They are super helpful and are really encouraging me in creating my own webcomic. I have a few questions for a comic I'm trying to write. I'm trying to figure out how to start it and I'm afraid that when I start it, I will be info dumping. The main character's backstory is important to the plot, but it includes a lot of information: hat he is, why things are the way they are, a few "rules", etc. However, this is all leading up to him moving into a new place (officially the beginning). I'm afraid this will be way too much, even if I separate them from each other(like as chapters). What should I do?? For some reason my brain isn't comprehending that the comic will end. I want it to last long, but I know I need to outline my story and make sure it has structure. Do you know good ways to come up with good endings and what makes an ending good? Sorry, I'm kind of asking a lot, but I really would love some help. Please and thank you!

Greetings. I know I'm not Bones and Ursula but I have a little advice. So, maybe you could have the 'why things are the way they are' and 'rules' put in throughout the story? Like one day he's walking around and sees someone break a rule? Or have him see a sign with all the rules written on it? And perhaps he (or someone else) could reminisce about the times before and how things got to this point. And maybe have his hat as a flashback or prologue (I'm guessing he got it before the start of the story). For endings, it's hard to really come up with one without knowing the story which I don't. But I think that you have to think about what type of ending you want your story to have e.g: tragic, bittersweet, cliffhanger, etc. and work from there. Perhaps working backward could help? To make an ending good, you have to think about the story and what would bring the readers closure (or want them to know what happens next in the case of a cliffhanger). I'm not sure if that is exactly helpful but there it is.

You have a very pretty art style, and I really like the lessons you give in this video, but as an artist myself, it was getting on my nerves that you weren't zooming in on your drawings when you were filling in the black background. You kept erasing and re-lining the characters in black and it was just like aaaaaaaaa
