In this video I'll share another way to simply and affectively notch/cope tubing on the cheap using common garage and metal working tools. I hope you learn something from this and can apply these tips to your own projects! Thank you - Tim
You'll need an Angle Grinder: amzn.to/2fxOvQt
A 6" cutoff wheel as seen in the video: amzn.to/2e6orGW
A 5" flap disk as seen in the video: amzn.to/2faBBUn
WARNING, larger wheels can be dangerous...What we normally recommend is 4.5" wheels:
cutoff: amzn.to/2fxQODb
flap disk: amzn.to/2eV35xS

Just thought I’d mention that on your bench vice there’s a V section just below the clamping teeth. That’s specifically for pipe so you don’t leave bite marks

Not that I don't think I could have figured it out on my own, but the way you oversimplified the process was incredibly helpful and likely saved a ton of time because I understand the approach so much easier. Good video.

Just seen your video out of boredom. Just popped up. 1 thing I noticed you done SO RIGHT! Wish you would've commented on it! You laid your grinder down wheel up!!!! Take your 'ears downa bit more. JUST A BIT!! weld will go a little more flat and better penetration for solid weld. Good job.

Thanks for making it look simple to do. Boy there are some "nervous girties" on here about the guard being removed~!!!! They obviously haven't used these grinders extensively.

For long layout on your 6 and 12 o'clock. Lay tube on long straight piece of angle or unistrut to get linear all in line then take tape measure to get spacings. Works on any diameter. I use this method for orientation on PVC plumbing.

That is the way I have done it, though I use a bandsaw instead of cut off wheel. And usually a 6" disc has a different centre size centre than a 4" ? One racecar fabricator I know uses the end of a belt sander. Looks so quick and simple though I found it hard work!

You're correct but he he said 4 1/2 grinder not 4. It steps up a size when you go to 4 1/2.

Awhile back you did a video on the Hobart Handler 140. I just picked up a new one. I'm going to use it to weld up a cage on my Cherokee. I'm new to welding and was wondering what I set those gauges to on the tank regulator...Thanks

+eugene hensley Usually you run about 20 cfh.
@bleepinjeep
@bleepinjeep 8 лет назад
+eugene hensley 20 CFH is the norm for indoor welding. Set the gas flow while pulling the trigger and welder/gas cylinder turned on. If you're outside in a slight breeze don't hesitate to turn up your gas flow to 35 CFH or higher. It just means you'll run out of gas sooner but you'll certainly get better shielding if you need it. - Tim

Make those cuts at 32° instead of 45° leaving about a half inch flat on the end and you’re done. No grinding just deburr and weld

Is that tube you're holding 1/8 thickness?
@billpickelheimer8142
@billpickelheimer8142 3 года назад
Cut way less of a cresentl off the tube and you won't have to knock the points down. You only need to cut back on the tube about 1/3 of the tubing diameter you should have 2 small cresent pieces with about 5/8 or so flat end of the tube left. Even with no clean up after the cut work it should fit nice and it could be welded as is especially if your mig welding, remember a little gap helps with full penetration ! Remember that you want blunt edges of the tube when your done grinding ,no knife edges !
@morganmorgan8962
@morganmorgan8962 3 года назад
You could just take your measurement add 3/8and cut back on a 45 to your 3/8 mark with a cut off wheel or a bandsaw If you’re using 2 inch tubing And sand the bevel off But your method is a good way.

most chop saws are capible of a 45° cut. most chop saws are cheaper than a decent grinder.

@pierdolio
@pierdolio 8 лет назад
I wonder, if instead of starting the cut on the centerline, you would start off maybe 1/8 to 1/4 inch over using the same angle. This might yield a perfect fishmouth that didn't need to have the center point trimmed away??

+Adam Pierce I second this motion and Raise Tim @ BJ, by one video showing us if this works!! Do you accept the Challenge, Tim?!?!?!?! ;-)
@bleepinjeep
@bleepinjeep 8 лет назад
+Adam Pierce Absolutely! That would expedite the process. I find it easier to make your cuts 90 degree to each other and keep them straight up and down by making a sharp point. Your thinking is valid for sure though! - Tim
@imautoobershooter1377
@imautoobershooter1377 7 лет назад
Adam Pierce the formula for making the best cuts is. You make your cut 1/3 the I'd of your tube. This will get you perfect results every time. The only thing you have to do is grind the cut flat as he did in the last part of the video.

I mark the cut, then cut it QUICKLY and accurately with an Oxy-Acetylene Torch. On steel anyway I do, it won't cut aluminum or other metal, but for STEEL why not use a Torch, it is easier and faster. BB

Good video...but you're driving me crazy and I gotta ask why you're not using the tubing jaws on your vise?....I mean, you're working with tubing...and it's a tubing vise. Don't you get tired of the tube jumping and scratching the hell out of the product?
@scootin123
@scootin123 6 лет назад
Grant Davis That's a good question. I often don't use the tubing jaws in a vice until I'm reminded they are there when my tubing slips in the straight jaws up top

@scootin123

firecloud77 I know what it can do to the crotch of my pants. . It burns a hole through them grinding without a guard allows the operator to precisely see the cut of the work . Using a grinder w/o a guard is dangerous to my eyes , my clothes my fingers and it's a fire hazard but so she many other jobs using personal protective gear. SAFETY VEST AND HELMETS OVERHEAT THE BODY FAST . Back up alarms are so ubiquitous that on a job site it is not recommended to be a laborer everybody on a job site should be an operator in their vehicle
