How to Oil Paint Creatively with Imaginative Realism

This is the first time that I cover pretty much the whole process of creating one of my artworks, from sketching, to building, photographing and painting. I give away all my secrets (haha) in this small 9"x12" composition full of juicy details. Listen to me admonish young impressionable minds with my off-the-cuff firebrand mouth words.

Many, many thoughts I hadn't mentioned. This is a small piece but I will make a full video of the complete process for a larger painting some day as well. Please comment, I try and reply to all social media discussions. Thank you for making it through my off-the-cuff narration, the only form I can carve out time for, always looking forward to improving in that direction. Thanks to those who liked or shared this video. To my current small subscriber base, this is for you. Super niche channel. No aspirations of huge exposure, I'll keep it to my idiosyncrasies. Back to painting now off camera.

The process video we've all been waiting for! Your art is so similar to ideas and things I've had in my head for decades, especially with the glowing lights and miniatures. I had zero disposable income for years and kind of abandoned some dreams. Now that I am able I can actually see a path forward to creating the art and ideas that have lived in my head. Such big gratitude to you for not gatekeeping your techniques. Love the process and the thought process. thank you, thank you , thank you!

My favourite part were “old man” hands close ups. Very paintable. Almost took a screenshot for reference, but that would've been too creepy. I should say something less silly now: I enjoyed a lot seeing in real time the way you put down the paint, gave me new ideas to try. I’d love to see more real time painting. Unedited 5h session with random thoughts and asmr.

"to show me roughly what the light will do in that area.." yes... I think about that all the time. Since most of my work comes from my head but is of real things, I have to occasionally build a partial model... so this video is quite unexpected company to find. Thanks. Beautiful work and a unique mind. Actually I think masters had to do a lot of this kind of thought... the actual scene of something that allegedly happened a thousand years before wasn't there to look at, so they had to conglomerate real models, light on posed fabric, bits of this or that tree or building from their current environs and meld it together in their minds. Who knows maybe some made models....

Thank you for watching and commenting. Yes, Rembrandt made clay sculptures for example. It is great how we have so many more materials to build with today. The old masters would have killed to have what we do. The first four years of my painting career, I tried to be a purist and only work from imagination. It was a great exercise to work the visualization muscles.

I watched your whole video- so please read this... lol. I got into model making FOR my artwork... in the end, my art WAS the model! But that was never the goal. My models became studio quality- fully realized concepts for my science fiction starship designs... all scratchbuilt. My end goal was to photograph my model and paint it- but making a tiny ship look right without being just a box in the sky- having dynamic perspectives, lighting, and so on, is extremely hard when the model is only two foot long. Things blur, all the detail is lost. most of the ship isn't even understood... it became "not worth it" for the artwork... sadly. My focus shifted. So now my oil painting has evolved into super focused on the brush work- for realism, and I agree with your points about brushes and how to utilize them for realism. Nearly all of how I work is right in line with what you say- I'm so upset about how "artist" that RU-vid are celebrating such "artsy" and flimsy brush work and creation methods that don't ever get close to what you go threw to produce your artwork. I feel the same way. It is so hard for an artist to do RU-vid with this type of work, because it takes forever like you say... I work very much like you in many ways. I am a crafty person, and am no stranger to the workshop, I own a table saw, band saw, drill press, miter saw, Overhead radial arm saw, (Craftsman 12" ~1972, a classic beast of a machine) all mounted on tables and optimized for making panels for my artwork. I only work on panels covered by thin cotton canvas, sanded to a super smooth finish, and gesso'ed and seal using my own home made gesso. I tone my gesso- so it can actually become a painting by itself- and it absorbs oil, so the first layer dries in about half the time normally taken by oil paint- a game changer. I use many modern materials that reflect what the masters used, mostly because they are cheaper and far better than art store bought materials! I want to have a long discussion with you! You hit on so many points that resonate with me! It is great to see I am not the only one going through this! This is so creepy- but what the hell. I hope to talk with you online. You're my favorite artist on Instagram and your video is amazing. Would you put together a video on how one can make a living with their art and pursue this kind of time-consuming painting?

Aw thank you for saying so. That is a capital idea. I plan to make some videos in the Scott Waddell style with pic-in-pic live painting while chatting off the cuff. That would be a perfect topic.

I like what you've said in this video. Radical honesty? You've earned a sub on that alone. You and I would have some very interesting conversations. Love you work too. And, it's not the quality of the brush, it's the unique mark it makes. I believe Andrew Tischler says that all the time.

@@stevechmilar1215 Radical honesty and art co-conspired to lead me out of the abyss I dug for myself. It was deep my friend... Which is why I appreciate when people adopt the prior. It's hard to be completely honest, especially with a past like my own. It's not something you merely 'kind of' respect when you encounter it. You find yourself thoroughly respecting anyone who lives in such a way, even if you're not all that fond of them in some cases. I have a saying, 'when you're being true to who you are, people may not like it, but at least you can revel in the fact that you're not full of shit.' Also, much of contemporary art annoys me on such a deep level and I truly have no idea why. I still appreciate the value of an artists technique, the amount of time they spent learning their style, and so on... Too often I feel there's a FORCED aspect of it that's driven primarily by the age-old adage, "will other people like it, and therefore BUY it." As if there's a rulebook you need to follow to be successful. I digress, there is due process involved... Albert Beirstadt was ridiculed for the big dark patches he strategically placed through his art... Andrew Tischler was told landscape painting was dead... It's free thinkers that lead the way into the future by avoiding the pitfalls of stagnation my man. Lead the way brother, I got your back.

Hello Mister Steve Ch..., Thank you for your fine work. I would like to know the ratio of time spent on documentation to time spent on the painting project. Also, would you consider that documentation process onerous, taxing, acceptable, fun, or exhilarating? Finally, would you consider creating an even more secret RU-vid channel where you document your documentation process? Infinity likes to you and your projects good sir.

Salient question good sir. I paint off camera about 98% of the time. It's crazy how by capturing only about 2% of the actual working time, I still had so much extra footage to edit. That has been a learning curve. It has been worth it so far, not too terribly taxing. Overhead camera mounts help. I used to get so frustrated by a tripod sitting where I needed to be. My new 100mm macro lens will really help capture sharp footage from a bit further back too, as well as better close-ups. The whole first part of this video was filmed on my iPhone. Didn't get to use my new lens until the very end with the still shots.

@@stevechmilar1215 Wonderful to have your response! I hope to hear you use the phrase "100mm macro lens" many more times in 2024. My favorite one-liner is "100mm macro lens, not even in macro mode!"
