Why paint when you're just going to paint over it? Here are some of my musings on the beginning stage of the painting process. This piece is 44 x 55 inches, oil on aluminum panel. The panel is gessoed with a mixed light grey primer to about 7 or 8 on the value scale. Millions of hours will go into finishing colour layers after this stage.

The material (sometimes known as dibond or compbond) is found at sign shops or industrial supply stores all over. It comes at 1/8" thickness (3 to 4mm). I make my own support boards for the back which requires a miter saw. If you don't have those tools, there is a company called Artefex that makes them and ships. Tell them I sent you. I also made a video about how I make a small aluminum panel.
