How to open a magnetically locked Blu-ray or DVD without damaging the case

Occasionally a sales assistant will forget to disable the magnetised lock on a DVD, Blu-ray, or game case. Here is a method for unlocking the case without any damage. If you don't have strong enough magnets handy, try a hardware store. Magnets from an old hard drive work well.
#unlock Blu-ray case #unlock DVD case #magnet lock

Very very helpful!!!!! Thank you so much !! Me, my 4yo son and my husband had fun opening our 15 (!) DVDs 😂 I bought them from library some time ago. They didn’t unlock them, and we didn’t realize that it needs to be open in certain way. Come on, it’s December 28, you don’t want to go all the way to the library. And your video came up first. You are a smart man! Thanks a lot 👏

I am SSOOOOO happy this video came up in your search! Other videos talk about using sharp tools to pierce through the casing, but it's all magnets so if you have ones that are strong enough, this is the way to do it!

Also very useful info for librarians: sometimes we get a locked case via interlibrary loan, and since most libraries don't use magnet-locked cases anymore, we don't have any way to open them. I got a pack of strong fridge magnets 15 for $15 from the internet and just brought one into work. Extremely convenient.

Thank you for the helpful video! I appreciate you using a case that showed the magnet inside the case. KEY WORD: Stacked I needed to stack magnets to make it work - name-badge magnets worked great for me. A bit of fiddling until I could hear the internal magnet click and the external magnet hold to the case, and repeat on the other side. It took a few tries but it worked!!

I'm so glad this worked for you! It seems like such a common problem but I honestly couldn't find a good solution on RU-vid so I worked it out myself 😂

I disagrees with several comments far below. After when I have several Blus and DVDs of Australian version that was locked after bought it from K-Marts and JB Hi-Fis stores, then I was angry that the fucked-head counters didn't unlocked it accordingly. But this video instruction has saved my day only when I bought the powerful nickel-sized magnet from Bunnings and it snapped to released the inside magnets. Thank you very much !!

Aw shucks! I made this purely because I also watched some other videos first and most of them resorted to damaging or destroying the case 😅

Essa dica é boa. O meu estojo de DVD tem uma trava vermelha. Vou ver se consigo uns imãs de Hard drive e ver se dá certo com a minha trava.

Tried this with magnets from a hard drive. But it didn't work. I mean, I hear it clicking and and can feel where the magnets are, but they will not move enough to be unlocked. Very annoying I now have no choice but to make the hour trip each way back to the library.

Michael Bowden, What kind of weak ass magnets are you using, if you break open a couple of old mechanical hard drives and remove the neodymium magnets from it, 2 of these magnets placed side by side is strong enough for the top of the case and another 2 placed side by side for the opposite under side of the case, this opens that stupid lock easily, it's great though that your method works (and if it works then continue doing this) but using 4 strong mechanical hard drive magnets works a lot better and easier I think.

Is there any way to remove the plastic thing once its been unlocked?

Yes, it is easily removable once the case has been opened.

Where did you get the magnets from? All I have is thin fridge magnets. :(
@Bluecrown360
@Bluecrown360 7 лет назад
The magnets I used were from souvenir fridge magnets that had broken. Even then I had to stack them to get sufficient strength. You're right; the thin, flexible type are nowhere near strong enough. If you have an old hard drive to pull apart, the magnets they have are excellent. Otherwise you might need to get some from a novelty store or something. Good luck!

Thanks mate. I have a few old HDD's laying around so I'll give it a go. I have one movie which the store forgot to open and I can't be bothered going back there. It's happened a few times in the past as well so it's goo to be able to open them yourself. Thanks for the info. :)

Is this something that is In the UK exclusively?? I've never seen this on American Blu-Ray cases. I feel bad for you guys sometimes, it feels like you've got so many restrictions.

Wtf? Magnets to open blurays? Nothing like this in the us, why would they have this?
@michaelbowden167
@michaelbowden167 8 лет назад
It isn't common, but you can find this kind of lock on blurays, DVDs, and video games. The lock is a deterent to casual theft. The store has a device built into their counter so they can swipe the cover to unlock it easily, but in this case the sales person forgot to do it.
@curtthegamer934

Oh, they definitely have these in America. My Mom checked out some movies from the library over a weekend once, and the staff forgot to unlock them before loaning them to her. DVDs could only be checked out for a few days before they were due, and the library was not open on weekends, this menaing that by the time my Mom could return to the library with the problem, the DVDs would be due back, and movie renewals were not allowed. But luckily, the day my Mom went back, the person working there that day was friendly and let her renew them anyway, so everything turned out fine.

@michaelbowden167
@michaelbowden167 Год назад
Magnatile magnets are ferrite-ceramic and don't seem to be very strong. Fridge magnets are definitely not enough, no matter what. If you don't have strong enough magnets handy, try a hardware store. Steel magnets are good but for something even better look for rare earth, neodymium. Or pull apart an old hard drive.
@Silencebound
@Silencebound 5 лет назад
Just do it BUT DON'T TRY to place the powerful magnet(s) underneath the case where the discs placed inside it otherwise the magnet could erase some data off from it. Be careful !

If these can seriously be opened with magnets from a fridge, then these are shit. Any criminal could just open them inside the store or at home, that looks like a lock on a child’s diary.
@michaelbowden167

It's really just a deterrent from casual theft. Anyone who has planned ahead would be more determined than a simple opportunist.

My son made that comment! I’m sorry! We both tried for a very long time and were not successful. We used very strong magnets. We had to take it to the library for them to open it. They had a hard time opening it even with the machine. So I think something was wrong with the case. It took them several tries and then they threw the case away!
