Optimizing you mechanical hard drive with HD Tune using short stroke can boost speed and performance of that hard drive. This can be useful for people who store games on a mechanical hard drive.

Good old days are here again! Nice to read about optimizing HDD's, and it is also nice to see that Windows 10 finally does a lot of the job in the background. (Error correction, Defragmenting). I've been in the computer business since a 10MB drive was big, but today I've got 5TB at home. If asked, I would recommend NVME (or SSD) for Windows and programs and HDD's for data. Partitioning HDD's into sweet spots will certainly speed up your access time, and I got to try. Thanks again Britec!

My compromise, on a recent refurbish of an old PC that would have Windows and probably not much else, was to create a shorter partition on the 160GB I was using (so the MFT is halfway up the short partition, and in the faster bit) and then extend the partition using Minitool (not sure if other methods would relocate MFT, but remembered reading it previously as a "move" the MFT trick). So, when it's in the low usage state, it still hasn't crossed over the MFT, so will have faster seek and faster MFT than if the whole drive was originally selected, but the space is available if needed - OK, it will probably be worse than default if it gets to near full. Short stroking a drive is not a new thing, I remember a DEC VAX drive that had a specific fast but half capacity mode, and my reaction was "fast, I like", "half capacity, I don't like". Of course, with partitions, you do have the option to split the drive and put important stuff in the fast bit, and relegate other things to the remainder. PS. Will have to try HDTune, I've got so used to using HDTach in compatibility mode, and not sure if that saps any performance

So if we have a 2 TB HDD, we should make 10 200 GB partitions?
@MuhammadAhmed-gm1bv
@MuhammadAhmed-gm1bv 2 года назад
well no, only the 1st 200gb is gonna be the faster one (as you can see in the vid graph how the performance dips down after the first 200gb) since its on the outer faster spinning side of the disk (you can watch "How To Optimize Your Hard Drive For Speed" by " NCIX Tech Tips" if you dont understand, or probably some physics circular motion lectures 😁) and its advised to have programs NOT run on the other partitions cuz doing that will require the disk head to move in closer to the slower spinning side, so preferably just if you want consistent speed either just store data you never really access there or just occasionally or just expect it to perform slower when you do

@FlyboyHelosim
@FlyboyHelosim 3 года назад
Depending on your setup, Windows can make accessing large drives with a lot of data rather difficult. I've not encountered your particular issue, but in the past if I've needed to recover data from a drive that's not broken but not responding well within Windows, I've used a live Linux distro booted from a USB stick and accessed the problematic drive that way with little fuss.
@ryanrbose289
@ryanrbose289 3 года назад
@@FlyboyHelosim I don't know much about Linux, but, I have Linux Ubuntu, so if you please explain it to me what to do with that, then it will be very kind of you.
@FlyboyHelosim
@FlyboyHelosim 3 года назад
@@ryanrbose289 For a start you'll need a working computer to make the USB installation, a free USB stick of maybe 8Gb or more, the Linux ISO file, and a program to burn Linux to the USB drive (I recommend Rufus). Ubuntu is quite heavy for this task so I'd recommend the lighter Xubuntu, which is based on Ubuntu so should still feel familiar but requires less disk space and is more responsive running off a USB stick (which has slower practical data transfer rates than a hard drive). You may want to look up videos for the actual procedure, but basically you will: * Create a bootable Linux USB stick. * Insert it into your computer when it's off. * Plug in your problematic external hard drive. * Turn the computer on and immediately repeatedly hit whatever key gets you to the boot options menu (or you may have to access the BIOS and temporarily change the boot order to USB first). * Boot from USB stick and run Linux but DON'T install it. * When in Linux find and select your problematic hard drive. * Access data simply as if it's a drive on an actual computer running Linux. You can also transfer data from the problematic drive to your actual computer or another external drive this way, if you want to actually move the data.

@FlyboyHelosim
@FlyboyHelosim 3 года назад
@@ryanrbose289 No problem. If you get stuck then reply and I'll try to help you. I know the process is rather lengthy but Linux can read multiple file systems with not much fuss. Another suggestion would be to grab a program such as CrystalDiskInfo (Windows) and check the health status of that external hard drive to make sure it doesn't have any errors or bad health.

Does partition size really decides the performance ?🤔 I can't understand clearly.. !
@ikannunaplays
@ikannunaplays 3 года назад
No, different partition sizes use different cluster sizes by default, and it's the cluster size that determines the performance of read and write operations. This is because the drive can read more data per sweep of the drive head. But there is a caveat, the bigger the cluster size the higher the read and write operation but it causes what's called cluster waste. That is when a clusters space is wasted by being only partially occupied. Example: the cluster size is 64kb, but it's only holding 4kb of data, then that cluster is considered completely used leaving 60kb of actual unused space. This man doesn't really fully understand what he's presenting, but he's trying, and one the right path per se. You can manually set the cluster size in windows, for high performance pick a bigger cluster size, smaller cluster size for more usable disk space at the expense of read/write performance. The tool he's using can be very useful in helping determine the proper cluster size for your needs on the drive you intend to use, this is independent of the partition size unless you are using an old partition type such as Fat32 which has limits on partition sizes and cluster sizes.
@Britec09
@Britec09 3 года назад
Well you see it in the video
@ikannunaplays
@ikannunaplays 3 года назад
Cluster sizes are less important on SSD but my testing shows they should be set to 1024b for most SSD's for least amount of cluster waste and read/write performance. Though many articles will state cluster size is irrelevant on SSD/NVME's but real life testing proves otherwise.

@lonniebeal6032
@lonniebeal6032 Год назад
Yes, now I understand why I've always heard if you partition a mechanic drive it will speed it up, but it only speeds up the first partition you make. Which is nice to know. This, like ssd's only actually increases the loading time, once a game or program is up and running, you may not see any changes. So, if you only have a hdd, after a format, I'd partician 20 to 30% of the drive for the first partition and load WIndows and games on that.
