Now THERE'S a recommendation ! No blah blah blah for giving me free stuff but a genuine first hand professional estimation of a products/service quality. Apart from that, HUGE respect to UMPQUA for stepping up and recognizing Scott's aforementioned professionalism. I bet the drivers also appreciate it when they know they're delivering to Scott...
@MattsAwesomeStuff
@MattsAwesomeStuff 6 лет назад
I wonder how they'd deal with a different situation. 1 - His first pick who wants to sponsor. Easy. You go with it. 2 - Say there's one company Scott's been working with for 10 years, they're his first pick, but they don't want to sponsor. And another company he's never dealt with before, they offer to provide the materials for free. Now what? Turn down free stuff from some place that's probably just as good but wouldn't have been your first pick? Of course you'd be open about that, and there's positive things to say there too "We've never used them before, but we often can't use all the suppliers and service companies we'd like, so they've offered to sponsor us and we're going to evaluate them during the build. We can't recommend or endorse them, yet, but they'll get mentioned for helping sponsor." 3 - Now what about a company that Scott has dealt with before and specifically doesn't like and doesn't recommend, but they were the only company who wanted to sponsor? Suppose it's a lot of money, a lumber yard for the whole build or a shingle company or some other major expense? It's simple to be noble, but probably better to be practical and, youtube ad rev is nothing compared to construction expenses. I wouldn't fault them either way. 4 - What happens if a company Scott dislikes offers to sponsor, but only if he recommends them? Not as easy as #1 above, but pretty easy to walk away from this since now there's an actual integrity issue. How should someone handle the times when it's not an easy choice? Be stubborn and impractical with sunshine and roses, or make the practical choice and just disclose what it is and isn't? The extremes are easy, it's the middle situations that make for hard choices.

MattsAwesomeStuff I'm not sure what your point is. Are you just telling us stuff everyone knows or are you complaining about the video or what?

Jesus in a handbasket, MattsAwesomeStuff. What will make you happy? I'll just bet this is a rant against advertising. Well, I was always successful when embarking on a DIY project (because I'm not in the trades myself) is to ask the pros who they use. It's as simple as that. Scott just saved you from asking the question, although we all know you weren't really asking a question.
@MattsAwesomeStuff
@MattsAwesomeStuff 6 лет назад
Rod - What makes you think I'm not happy? I think you mistake my curiosity (I literally open with "I wonder...") and discussion for complaint or criticism. It's great that the company they know and trust sponsored them. It's just interesting to me, how might they (or me, or anyone with a channel that sometimes takes sponsors and provides content) handle the situation if it was slightly different. Would you prefer that people only leave comments with thank yous or criticism and avoid discussion?
@answeris4217
@answeris4217 6 лет назад
MattsAwesomeStuff - I don't know if he asked for the free stuff or it was offered when he said what he was doing. Personally I think it was the second and for me personally I think its a good deal. At least he was upfront about what the sponsored gave him. Remember he wants to show a complete cost to what this will cost and he didn't say that any other people he promoted gave him anything. I think this was given and I think he wouldn't be promoting somebody else because big time concrete companies probably would make more from this than the one that he used

Thank you Scott and Umpqua Sand and Gravel for making this project more possible and investing in the trades knowledge Scott is passing along. I’ll say, this video is incredibly valuable for someone like me in both entertainment and educational content. When I consider all the video I’ve watched....the long term service to the trades is incredible with what is being shared. Not million dollar rebuilds of New England antique homes...but actual homes many could afford. Amazing project and thanks for showing the ups and downs of a professional dealership my with unpredictable job circumstances. Well produced and very enjoyable tribute to a local business giving to the cause and to the RU-vid community🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

It is always impressive when you see a small family owned business thriving in the face of big corporate competition. The interference of government in the marketplace has made it terribly difficult for an honest man to make an honest dollar. A friend of mine who owned a couple of business once told me there is no such thing as an honest businessman any more. At the time I didn't understand what he meant but that stuck in my mind. Years later I realized what he was saying is you can't comply with all the rules, regulations, permits, fees, licenses, taxes and on and on with government burden and remain in business. A past mayor of Denver, Wellington Webb, once said that 99% of all the legislation written and passed is for the purpose of keeping the little guys from being able to compete with the big guys.

It's minutia, but since you brought it up... It's nice to show your support, and to presume consistency, but I think you do your mentors a disservice by being a fan, or a cult of personality towards them. Either way you'd probably be liking the video, but judging them on the merits of their content, rather than fandom, would have a lot more meaning. And in general in life, from politics to opinion, the less you pick a winning 'team' and who you cheer for, and the more you keep yourself open, the better a world you make.

Just some trivia,the slump test is 30 puddles per lift with each lift penetrating the previous one by a minimum of one inch. The rod should not be a piece of re-bar but a 5/8" smooth rod with a bullet tip. Also,spend the extra money for plasticizer to adjust the slump. It is worth every penny.

Just a bit more on designing concrete mixes: If the plans call for a specific PSI requirement, say 3000 psi, a brand new mix design will be designed for 1200 psi above the psi requirement. So if you have test cylinders made for that 3000 psi mix and broke at 28 days (industry standard for testing concrete strength) they will probably average 4200 psi. They do this to account for anything that may adversely affect the strength ( poor mixing, aggregate size/strength, too much water, ect.) The 1200 psi covers the standard divination (think statistics and bell curves) so that at least 95% of the time, the concrete will be above 3000 psi. If a mix is used a lot, and has lots of testing to show the properties of the mix, they can start to change the cement/water content to make a more economical mix that still nearly always meets the strength requirements.
@arkansas1336
@arkansas1336 6 лет назад
Brian Helmold --- Our 'job site placed' 3500psi concrete would usually break at 3800-4200psi range in 7 days. 4000psi would break at 5100-5700 in 28 days.
@brianhelmold1332
@brianhelmold1332 6 лет назад
Was there a need for high early strength? In our work if we need to put loads on the concrete early we pour a higher psi mix. Example: for a footing needing 4000psi, we would likely pour a 6000 psi mix to get the strength earlier. Concrete gets about 70%-80% of its 28 day strength at 7 days.

I bet one could use a laser or LIDAR scanning system to capture and build 3D models for your concrete forms. Then, one could very accurately compute the volume including all the irregularities. Another benefit would be the ability for a designer/engineer to run some FEA/CFD models to determine the optimal way to pour and let the mix set to achieve the desired product. A little more work, possibly overkill for some jobs but possibly a great risk-reduction step for other jobs.

Clean up? My clean up load was 9 yards and it took more than an hour to arrive and we had to keep churning the face of installed crete while we waited. That was embarrassing. 81 yards in total. Monolithic slab with 2' wide, 4' deep perimeter footing and 1' by 2' at all interior footings, load-bearing or not. I built 4' by 8' forms for the outside of the perimeter and installed rigid insulation all around afterward. That's what happens when a novice builds his first house. That slab is going to be here 10,000 years from now. ...and then, it turned out I had married the wrong woman and lost it all.

It's interesting to me to hear you speak about slump and its importance with respect to strength of the concrete. Far too many people who should know better will add far too much water for ease of workability, which is easily compensated for with admixtures. That said, I remember several years ago watching a video of the Burj Khalifa being built in Dubai and the slump was, near as no difference, the complete height of the test cone, rather shockingly. The mix was actually designed that way for pumpability, and had a bunch of admixtures and a special silicon additive for extra compressive strength. Thanks for this series, Scott.

Concrete pumping: I've been reading in forums where concrete pumpers have discussed using dish soap to lubricate the lines and adding additional water to insure it pumps. These guys know it has adverse affects with concrete strength but they're more concerned about a pump not pumping. I've also read that apparently a lot of line pumps are not concrete but grout pumps. That many a contractor will pay more for the mix to pay less for a pump and so quite often are pouring weak pea gravel or just slightly larger aggregate mixes that look good but aren't strong enough. For my project I want a very high strength mix with large aggregate, water reducers (Plasticizers) and fiber to reduce shrinkage but I'm concerned this isn't possible and that on sight a pumper is going to modify the mix to work with his pump. Kind of pisses me off.

I'm a structural engineer working in Australia with 25 years experience. These videos are excellent. Just a quick observation without trying to cause a massive ruckus here it blows my mind that in the US you are still using imperial measurements. I was watching you talking about cubic feet and ordering concrete in cubic yards and thinking 'what a nightmare'. I guess though that's all you know and you're used to it so fair play I guess. Anyway keep up the great work. This is a brilliant series that I've just found. I'm doing an owner / builder build on my house and watching all of these with great interest.

Dude...your making cutting rebar way to hard! Get a Short handle rebar cutter...mount it (handles off the end), on one end of a waist-high table bench! Now you can put your rebar on the bench and not bending over to pick the rebar up from the mud... Now...put a pipe about 18 inches long on the handle on the rebar cutter that moves up and down and you have a secure, long handle, rebar cutter without all the backache... I have a Dropbox to catch cut pieces and wheelbarrow wheels on mine so I can move it around!

I don't know if this happened to you in the PNW but I remember in the 90s and early 2000s concrete redi mix companies were loading all kinds of crap, like way too much fly ash for instance, into the concrete to try and reduce the amount of cement in order to save money and we were having a heck of a time putting a finish on that junk. The concrete would come up to strength in lab tests so thats all they cared about..It was garbage to finish. They have now seemed to gone back to putting the actual weight of cement that a 5 or 6 sack mix is and the concrete is nice and pasty like it used to be. Its like finishing concrete from the 1980s lately, which is great. I don't know if they went back to mixing like normal or if they have new and improved admixtures, but the finishabilty of our concrete has drastically improved.

Today we got the rebar for the trench foundation on the house my wife and I are building here in Michigan. I'm reviewing your videos on the concrete process for the spec house to double check my thinking (and, in the case of the rebar, guide my correction - I didn't allow for the "development length"!) . We're at the point of getting quotes on concrete from a couple of providers in our area and will soon have a truck on site dumping mud. You've been a tremendous resource. Thank you.

Hey Scott I m not pouring concrete but if I ever do I’d refer to your wealth of knowledge. As a young man in my teens I was a hod carrier and it’s hard work and some of the most enjoyable work. We did outside plastering in California as well as inside. We did allot of hardwall inside and in bathrooms we would put a putty coat finish where we troweled it down to where it was as smooth as a babies bottom. I learned from a 65 year old master. I think it’s a lost trade. Sorry for rambling on you just gave me flashbacks. Your such a joy to watch and listen to,your a great educator about trades and being an exemplary human.Your son was spot on when he suggested you do RU-vid and I’d like to thank him.

Enjoyed the video. I'm a concrete contractor and I think you pretty much nailed it. And I'm the same way with my ready-mix supplier. We are loyal customers of theirs. The only time we don't order from Carlo Ditta is when we're working in an area they don't service.

5 trucks, 9 yards each, 45 yards. You said maybe it overruns to 49. Then something about "order a cleanup" but didnt really explain what that is. Isnt the entire point of the video to learn how to order? Is there 1 extra in all the trucks ? and you can scrape it out ? I sincerely dont get it

This is an extremely interesting series especially to a non American. Very detailed and very well presented for a novice. American labour is so undervalued that one would spend hours to save a yard of concrete, seems somewhat wrong in a country as prosperous as America. As phoonesnax says below ".... this series will be legendary when it is done" but can I live that long? Al Woodhouse is intent on building house in two years we may get the slab poured by then; Man is it slow moving.

The math for estimating is more fun in Canada. Where we work in feet, code is in millimetres, and we order concrete in cubic metres. (And soil in cubic yards, just make things confusing.)

As far as concrete goes with minerals and additives, be glad you don't have the problem that the folks in Ellington CT have. www.ellington-ct.gov/DocumentCenter/Home/View/1279 their concrete had a mineral which caused it to crumble 30 years later. Now there is a mandate for all those installing , manufacturing, even hand mixing concrete, to keep all of the information for 50 years. Where the materials came from, how it was mixed and who supplied, and installed it. From the CT website, Some highlights of the investigation’s findings are: The mineral pyrrhotite must be present to result in the foundation to deteriorate in the way observed. The minimum amount of pyrrhotite needed to trigger deterioration is not yet known. Becker’s Quarry, the main source of concrete aggregate for JJ Mottes, includes more than trace amounts of pyrrhotite, and is located on a vein of rock that contains significant amounts of pyrrhotite.

There are regions in Quebec, Canada that have this pyrrhotite problem. It's quite a severe issue!

There is a local company here in south eastern Kentucky where I'm from that built a concrete ramp for me when I was a child because I've been I. A wheelchair all my life and my childhood home is up on a hill and my mother was having to carry me up the hill to get to the house. They didn't charge us a penny and the way they found out about me was that a concrete truck driver that was driving for them was driving by one day and saw my mother having to carry me up the stairs, and sometimes I would have to crawl up the hill myself. That driver went to the owners as soon as he got back to the plant and in less than a week the owners of the company showed up to our house with a whole crew and a truck full of concrete and told us they wanted to do this to help us. By the end of the day I have a brand new wheelchair ramp to get from the driveway to my house. And they even let me help a little bit spreading and smoothing the concrete. I was 12 years old so I didn't do much but really enjoyed watching them. I'll be 32 this Thursday and still use the ramp every time I leave my home, and it's still in perfect condition.

This is off of the subject, but I think your the man to go to for construction problems. What is sour concrete? Our local concrete criminals sold the new school this product and now it has to be torn up and replaced. There are four complete schools that have this problem.

When setup the edge board , I saw you put top board and then bottom board , how to specify the width of the bottom board ? Cut to size on site ? Seems bit difficult because it needs to rightly fit in the gap between top board and ground.

You rod it 25 times per lift with a 5/8 rod. I remember that one from the red seal exam I'm assuming that's what it would be down in the states to I know it's what it is in Canada anyway sir

When rodding a slump cone, do not use a piece of rebar. Use the proper rod which is smooth. Otherwise, you won't be getting the proper test results.
