How to pass a Road Train. In this short video we show you how a caravan, fifth wheeler or mobile home can pass a road train safely in three simple steps.
Overtaking a road train can be performed safely in 3 simple steps.
00:00 Establish Communication
00:23 Tell the Road Train driver your Intention
00:35 Be Prepared to overtake when advised
Step 1: Establish Communication
Change your UHF radio to channel 40, to call the roadtrain.
Identify the roadtrain by its unit number - in this case its PM12.
Caravan - “Copy in PM12”
Road train driver - “Yes got you go”
Step 2:
Tell the road train driver your intention
Caravan - “I’m in the vehicle behind, can you please advise when it is safe to overtake”.
Road train driver - “Copy that”
Step 3: Be Prepared
Be prepared to pass when the road train driver advises it is clear to overtake.
Road train driver - “copy in the caravan behind PM12, its clear to go.”
Caravan - “Copy that we’re on our way”
Always ensure the road ahead is clear with ample room get well ahead of the road train before returning to the left lane.
This road safety initiative is brought to you by Kenworth Trucks and Fusion Contracting WA.

Buy them a coffee at the next rest stop - they don’t go that slow so will arrive sooner than you think

Excellent. We have been doing this since the 70's and not once was it even remotely dangerous. I also don't mind a short chat either, especially as Destoir says below - Just to say thanks and have a good day. We can get bored in cars as well.

It's a bit more safe to do it this way, but in my experience not completely necessary. If you start looking for oncoming traffic while nearing the back of the roadtrain, you can see if the road is clear for the upcoming kilometer. Then push the pedal to the metal to finish the action quickly.

Waiting...waiting, 60 miles later, "OK mate you have a 15 second gap in traffic" Goes for it...makes it. Rounds next corner. Slows up for tractor :)

I find dropping a gear and disappearing the best method, followed by a left and right indicator to say thanks

Most of us will give the right indicator a flick when it's safe to go past. And if you don't have a uhf when you put back in front just chuck on your right then left indicator quickly and it says thank you.

@@Xtralge4ee I indicate to the left and move a bit to the left to give the go-ahead to the car following me to imply that I am pulling over... a roadtrain indicated to the right and I thought he is showing me that I can overtake, but he turned right - I nearly ran into him, just realised in the last moment that he is turning right...

Truckies sit on the road all day every day. It gets extremely boring on the road. People do what they can to relieve the boredom of travelling. That could be the smallest thing like giving the oncoming drivers a wave or helping out a driver on the road like in this video. Smallest things help keep your mind active on very long boring trips.

It’s not the responsibility of the road train driver to advise the motorist behind of a safe time to overtake. The motorist has to assess for themselves the right time to overtake. Also to overtake while towing a caravan is sheer madness.
