Fear of going to the dentist could be from multiple reasons - such as past trauma, hearing about someone else’s bad experience, what your parents taught you as a kid, the dental office environment (drilling sounds, etc), and/or fear of the unknown. Whichever it is - this video talks about strategies and ways to overcome your dental anxiety.
If you are experiencing ongoing anxiety please consult with a medical doctor and/or licensed therapist. The tips in this video regarding dental fear do not replace advice from a mental health professional

I’m 32 and hadn’t been to a dentist since I was 17. I’ve had an intense fear of the dentist due to an experience there as a kid. This April, I developed an infection in an upper molar that basically caused trismus and I had no choice but to go to a dentist. I almost passed out and all that was happening was an X-ray was being taken. Lol. Yikes. But then...He was SO comforting! I ended up needing it to be extracted along with all four wisdom teeth. I was so scared at that appointment that I couldn’t even hold my pen to fill out my paperwork. I’d heard so many wisdom tooth horror stories that I was terrified. I had NO pain! None. I couldn’t believe it. I got brave last week and called my dentist’s office for next steps and I went for my first cleaning in over a decade on this past Wednesday and my hygienist (which is so cool to say...”I have a hygienist” lol) was INCREDIBLE! I had no pain or anything. A 15 year fear of the dentist is GONE. It’s unreal! Thank you for all you do and thank you for creating such a judgment free and informative environment! I’ve learned so much from your channel!

We're they impacted? I just flew to Colombia, was supposed to get them extracted AND OVER THE PHONE they saw my x rays and they just told me well, in your case there can be some nerve damage and possible jaw bone fracture. -instant panic And yeah, i didn't get them pulled 😭😭 And i reeeeeally don't want to be put under Any tips? Dentist said the older you are the harder it gets.
@PB_and_Jenny

@@thedoggroomerbrad_ 3 were normal and 1 was impacted so they had to go into my jaw bone to get it out. It was in May but the jaw is still healing. It does take longer the older you are for them to heal. My sockets healed up in speedy time with no issues. I had no pain. My oral surgeon used IV sedation so I was “awake” but I have no memory of anything. The worst part was the IV going in burned for just a second and everything else was a breeze. They told me about the nerve damage and possible jaw fracture risk as well. I didn’t have a choice, though. I had to get it done. It’s now December and I’ve had 4 premolars extracted also and am 5 weeks into braces. My teeth and I have been on one hell of a journey this year!

@tapiwanasheblessingzvidzwa8989
Just came from a filling appointment and I can tell you I wonder why I even feared this to begin with. I spent all night watching dental needle insertion videos and educating myself. I saw young kids not even flinch while getting injected and wondered why a 26 year old like me was freaking out. Turns out the procedure was completely painless. Uncomfortable yes, the drilling part, but totally bearable for like half a minute. I closed my eyes, did not see the syringe, I had taken Valium an hour before, I also asked for numbing gel and then lastly played my favorite music. It was so quick and painless I quickly arranged to have my next filling done within a week. I honestly dont know why I had the fear, it’s unfounded.

there are so much reasons for me: fear of pain that I used to feel when I was a kid, fear that dentist won't wait long enough for an aesthetic to work and not listen to me when I say I still can feel pain (been there too), fear that aesthetic won't work at all cause I'm stressing too much, then there are drilling noises and smell that make my stomach hurt, guilt that I let my teeth decay to this stage (even if it's not that bad, I feel like the dentist will be disgusted anyway and will judge me), and then there's the bill, cause you don't know in advance how much I have to pay and it freaks me out! My dentist offers headphones so that you don't have to hear the drilling. As for the pain, you'll be so numbed up you don't be able to feel your face... like the Weeknd. As someone that neglected their teeth for years, I went through a long process of many fillings, 4 root canals, and 4 corresponding crowns...please just go for a consult. :) BTW They sometimes offer sedatives like Xanax or Valium if you're really anxious, but you may need someone to drive you home.

I have sensory overload, anxiety and I’m on the autism spectrum. So going to the dentist is always a struggle for me, I had braces when I was a teenager which was not fun for me at all as I was also going through a tough time with my anxiety at the time. I then had to get my wisdom teeth taken out, which thankfully I was asleep for. Up until this past year, I didn’t go to the dentist regularly and my teeth brushing wasn’t regular either. But I found a great dentist and I am now serious about fixing my gums and teeth. They’re not horrible, but they could be better. I don’t want them to get any worse! I finally got the courage to overcome my fear and now I’m on top of things.

I had a dentist scare me so much I didn’t go to the dentist for three years which resulted in a very painful tooth that pain meds were barely helping with which ended in a RCT. Where I go they’ve got tv’s on the ceiling you watch while they’re doing your procedure and only just from watching this video have a realised how much that takes my mind off what is happening, I guess I’m too busy concentrating on tv I don’t have time to worry what is happening and if it’s going to hurt.

I couldn’t handle the changes I saw happening at the dentist office of the person who bought her practice. So I move somewhere else. I now have a cavity. I am terrified! My previous dentist monitored things in such a way that I would probably never have ended up in this particular situation. And my new dentist has nothing to offer for my anxiety other than the medication that I already take just to get through a cleaning. The Dr and his assistant tried their best to calm me down and I managed to pull through until the end! The feeling was awful though. Really thank you for this. I sweat through my shirt, shake uncontrollably and burst into tears at the dentist during the "normal" cleaning. My teeth are so painful and my fear of the pain is horrible too. I do think i may have a good team now, because this morning i went for the cleaning and as i started panicking, the dentist stopped and completely slowed it down. We discussed and decided that was enough for today, and booked an appt for next week with an anti anxiety med and nitrous, to see if that will help. Taking off the pressure and telling me i didn't just "have to get through it" were very helpful. I'm incredibly ashamed of how i am at the dentist, and just hoping i can still change over time.

Most dentists don't believe me when I tell them what I went through and it's exhausting to have to repeat the story all over again to find a dentist who will. I will always have anxiety now.

Hi! I'm from the Philippines too and I finally found a dentist who genuinely listens and cares about my fears and phobias, and she really adjusts her techniques etc to not make me feel uncomfortable. She even lets me watch a movie on my phone during the procedure lol the dental clinic is called "Luxe Smiles" here in Southwoods, Biñan Laguna, and it's not that far assuming you're from Manila, the dentist's name is Keneisha

I try to be super open and honest w my dentists when I've gone, but some make me feel infantilised. When I went to get my wisdom teeth taken out, I requested to be put under for the procedure. I told the doc right before he put in the IV needle that I have a phobia about needles and I was panicking a bit, and all he said was "ugh you're fine" and jabbed me right then. I also feel looked down on/condescended to when they tell me I should come in more often and I I have to reply that I don't have insurance so I literally can't afford to. It seems like it's being taken as non-compliance when it's really not.

I went to the dentist today after years of anxiety and fear. Like my nerves were so bad but I had to go. Turns out this new dentist is so good and practical. He was also very pretty and kind! I would really suggest you guys talking to your parent or friend or anyone you trust, and taking them with you to the appointment. Talk to the dentist first before you get treated or you could book a separate appoinment. The video was really helpful! Remember, you aren't alone! ❤

My last dental appointment was probably in 2015, you've inspired me to want to make an appointment. I guess I have a super sensitive mouth, and part of the fear is the pain, cause it does hurt every time in one way or another. The worst is when they floss for me, I hate that so much and it hurts so bad. Part of it is trauma, I'm sure. When I was a kid I had a hygienist that would make me feel bad if I said something hurt. Your videos have encouraged me to reclaim my oral health. I've got a waterpik that helps me actually floss which I never used to do because it hurt with the string, I picked up an ultrasonic toothbrush that I know how to use properly, found some sensitive friendly mouthwash and toothpaste and have been trying my damnedest to get back on it. Just hope I can work up the courage to schedule one.

Ok, new subscriber...I have to go to the dentist! cracked tooth and gum line and nerve pain now is making me look at going. I am just going to say...I really REALLY don't want to go! If it wasn't for this pain, I'd not even be searching like I have been trying to get past the anxiety. I am part of the population that traumatized as a kid and swore once I got to be an adult, I'll never step foot in a dental office again. Two pulled teeth and decades later. Here we are! Thank God for youTube! I'll find my dentist and get my deep cleaning done. This is video #6 for me. Even if it is older. You present a calming tone and make me feel as if it really will be ok. I’ve always had struggles with dentists, I would scream when I was little every time I went and the dentist couldn’t get me to open my mouth. Eventually he sent me to a “specialist” who sat on me, and I was choking and he wouldn’t let me out. It only got worse from there and I didn’t go again until I was 9 or 10 and we finally found a dentist I can trust. @@Agatha_vv honestly if they have a dental office they work at, it might be best to see if that office has a "contact us" or a "new patient info" section. The dentist I reached out to had both, and under the new patient page they had a way to reach out to them and you could add comments to it. I was up front in it and said that I had a lot of anxiety around the dentist and also some white coat syndrome, and they were super kind and worked with me through it! I ended up not going to them (insurance problems) but they were able to help me find a good dentist near me who also took my insurance! I have had fears of the dentist as a kid but I got over it when I would ask my dentist or hygienist to tell me what was going on and what they were doing. It made me feel much more comfortable understanding what was happening and that's actually what started my interest in dentistry. I had to go in for sever pain in a tooth. I had not been to the dentist since I was a kid, I’m 28 now. They found a very sever and deep cavity that needed to be done right then and there. It was close to being a root canal. Three minutes in, the local anesthetic mixed with my very high anxiety made me start to have a panic attack. Doc said the anesthetic had a side effect of rising your blood pressure a small bit but with my anxiety I already had on top of it worsened it. They gave me all the time I needed to take some breaths. Apologized like crazy and they asked if they should do small breaks in between filling it. Helped immensely. It’s been six months and I’m going in tomorrow for a cleaning nervous but remember how amazing they were helps me so much

I just had a root canal and before I went, I was petrified. To anyone who is reading this, and has extreme anxiety, rest assured that your worry is way worse than the procedure. It did not hurt at all, absolutely no pain. I was only in the dentist office for 45 minutes. Do not believe all the horror stories that people tell. I faint so easily, and it's always a fear I have but I went to the dentist well prepared. I brought my own little fan to plug in, listened to music with my earbuds, wore my compression socks, and my doctor prescribed me low dose of Xanax to take an hour before my appt. Just had to have someone drive me there and back because I was slightly groggy. For those who suffer with anxiety know that we have to do whatever makes us feel a little more comfortable, and I made it through the appt with flying colors, and you will too. Also, try to get an early morning appt so that it is done and behind you. Relax, your fear and worry is worse than the actual dentist visit.

@@funzie6407 Yes I live in the US. Our imaginations tend to take us places we don't always need to go. Many years ago I had another root canal, and it was terrible, BUT, times are so different now. I honestly didn't feel any pain and I was honestly out of the dentist's office faster than I expected. I'm pretty sure that your mind will be way more scary than the actual procedure. Try to remember that a root canal saves you from having to get your tooth extracted, and when it's all said and done, you'll be glad you did it. I was so nervous too, but after the appointment, all I had done was worry myself for nothing!

I always thought that when I’m older and can control it, I would avoid going to the dentist as much as I can. Then 5 months ago, my mom took me to a new dentist. It changed my entire view on it. Not only is my fear slowly fading away, but funny enough I actually can’t wait to go and enjoy being there. I have gotten over the last few months and still need a lot of work done. I have a ton of cavities and most were filled already. I also need some root canal’s and crowns. I’m still a tiny bit nervous, but I trust that I’ll be comfortable during it all. My new dentist is kind, caring, will always make sure I’m comfortable, explain everything step by step and reassure me. I’m sure there are plenty of other dentists like that. All you need to do is google dentists, look at reviews, ask people you know and make sure it’s all good before going. It can change everything

I have anxiety in general and mainly it has to do with things that make me queasy and I have a fear of passing out. This anxiety has stemmed from trauma and has been hard to cope with. I have been putting off going to the dentist even though I have cavities that need to be fixed. I still feel uneasy about the unknown and it’s hard for me to bring myself to go because of my anxiety. Thank you for making this video. It definitely made me feel better but I still feel trapped by my fears. I think I just have to make myself go but it’s very hard to convince myself.

Dentist have caused my dental anxiety. I had one drill right into me without me being numb after I told them I didn’t feel numb. Then a different one lied about what my insurance covered and I almost paid 1400 out of pocket - got a second opinion and insurance covered all but $35.00. Another one told me my front tooth needed a root canal and a crown due to bone loss- got a second opinion and the other dentist said I had great bone around my front top teeth and showed me the X-ray to prove it. I am terrified of dentists and almost feel like some are just scammers
