Muay Thai seems to attract more than its fair share of "nice" people...
So how can a nice person hit another person with the kind of destructive power that Muay Thai is designed to inflict?
In a recent Heavy Hitters program support call, Arnaud asked how he can overcome the fear of hitting and hurting people?
It was a great question, and one he was happy for me to share to help out others too. Thanks Arnaud. :)

I have exactly the same mentality as you when it comes to sparring. I think I needed to hear from a high profile fighter that he’s thought it through the same way. It really helped my confidence! Thank you!

I hear two different ideas that need to be separated to be resolved with the fighter. We need to differentiate between wanting to hit someone and wanting to hurt someone. They aren't the same thing, though there is overlap. I think once you find where the person is you can help them perform better. They can still fight well if they don't want to hurt someone as long as they want to hit them. Sparring is a good example. I don't want to hurt my training partner but I do gain satisfaction in landing clean shots with a thud. I'm just pointing out that there's a difference and the two were treated the same in this conversation.

Absolutely! And there's definitely a big overlap - due to the techniques used in Muay Thai, and the scoring criteria being primarily to show an effect on your opponent. And yes, sparring is completely different to fighting... something that I do mention in this conversation, but you may have missed.

Even in fights at school, I would prefer to grapple because the thought of permanently damaging someone over whatever minor thing is super unappealing to me.

I grew up with a lot of physical abuse. There is a part of every person that they spend their entire life trying to suppress because it is dangerous and not fit for society. But it is there.
@heatrick
@heatrick 9 месяцев назад
I can only imagine what growing up with physical abuse must have been like, and how it would still affect you later in life too. What I do know, is that facing these traumas is the most effective to diminish their negative impact on you. And, yes, like you said, there's a part of everyone that physically wants/needs to unload. Finding a healthy outlet for that benefits everyone, not just the individual. :)

What about sparring? I'm typically taller and heavier than the people I train with, I am worried about throwing round kicks vs smaller guys because to throw it fast with proper form I have to use my hips and I worry that it will hurt them too much
@heatrick
@heatrick 2 года назад
Yes, that's always a problem when you're much bigger than your training partners. I recommend focusing on defensive practice when sparring smaller folks, and even adopting a fighting style that I don't usually use... For example, avoiding an Aggressive style and aiming to employ Elusive and Tricky styles instead. Check out this video here for more thoughts on fighting styles: heatrick.com/2018/12/14/muay-thai-fighting-styles-and-becoming-a-complete-fighter/

I struggle with that in sparring. Not fights though but a lot on sparring.
@heatrick
@heatrick 10 месяцев назад
I get that. Sparring is amongst your teammates, and it should be playful. Fighting is different. That said, if you catch a training partner with a shot in sparring, it’s their fault, not yours. You are pointing out an opening. However, you should not use appropriate power in sparring, and not go for the “finish” like you would in a fight! 😬😜

i do mma and i am right now watching this because id imagined myself knocking someone out and it made me fear freezing mid fight after maybe landing a big punch or kick or seeing a ko strike as obviously no one wants to go in there trying to kill their opponent but you have to go in with the mindset of im trying to hurt you and try my best to put you out, do you have any tips about this fear or anything to help at all ?
@heatrick
