I tend to have the wider end of the tie on the outside (and facing the outside), the rationale being that the larger part of the circumference gets less fold, and that's the part of the tie that will be displayed when worn. There is a risk of it getting messed up since then the most important part is on the outside, but you could also put it in a bag or wrap it in tissue paper to prevent this.
Very nicely done you should work for NASA though- I am an exec with Silicon Valley tech giant moving to London.
