Welcome to Kona Academy. In this video we will teach you how to paddle sideways. Yes, you read right Sideways.
This technique may require some time and effort to master, but it's a valuable skill that can significantly enhance your abilities as a stand-up paddler. By diligently practicing this technique, you'll not only improve your strength and stability on the board, but you'll also develop a deeper understanding of how to maneuver effectively in various water conditions.
Here is how you do it:
- Begin by standing in a parallel position at the balance point of the board, usually around the midpoint handle. Maintain this position throughout the movement.
- Hold the paddle with your hands as you would in a normal paddling stroke.
- Keep the paddle on the side of the board facing the object you want to move toward.
- Place the paddle blade a bit out from the side of the board and level with your feet, with the backside of the blade facing you.
- Keep the blade in the water throughout the movement.
- Start by pulling the backside of the paddle blade straight toward your feet, causing the board to begin moving sideways.
- Then, angle the blade outward and forward in the water toward the bow.
- Next, pull the backside of the blade straight toward the board slightly in front of your feet.
- Immediately afterward, angle the blade outward and backward toward the stern.
- Now, pull the backside of the blade straight toward the board a bit behind your feet.
- If you notice, for example, that the front part of the board is not keeping up, then move the blade forward and pull it toward the board again, and vice versa, so that the side of the board always aligns with the object.
- Repeat these Z-shaped paddle movements until you reach the object.
And thats how you paddle sideways.
