wlop is THE goat man I discovered wlop when i was waaaaayy back in highschool, over a decade ago... and seeing his skill grow is just wowowowwow. But even back then, it was actually so good too! it's just been refined. I sub to wlop's patreon for about a year ages ago, to try and learn, and I think the most amazing part is just how he makes drawings look so effortless - there is like no form via excess detail, you are absolutley right it is so reminiscent of the speed painting BOOOM. Wlop is such a master at this, and is such a display of the PERFECT mastery of value control and LIGHTTTT, and less is more.... and more ... when you watch his drawing of the character skin, its SO basic! he doesn't spend much time on painting the form of body much at ALL, but it comes through so clearly and so fast. Then all the rest, the jewellery etc.. Its splotches and scribbles and marks even, but his knowledge of texture and value makes it read PERFECTLY compared to someone trying to mimic. the way he controls lighting, value, contrast, etc. to control the visuals and how we read his art is so much like the old masters. and i really love WLOP because he has maintained his integrity in art and what i mean is his vision, storytelling, the MEANING behind drawing .. its not just like sakimichan or others that got good, and dropped quality in favour of money and lost their storytempping and composing art.

It's nothing short of magic to my eyes. I look at the details and the art is just a bunch of messy lines, borderline gibberish. But look at the whole picture and its focal point and it utterly convinces you that you're staring at a beautiful, super detailed rendering. Just crazy. It almost makes me want to hate the human brain for being so fooled into imagining the details that aren't there.

Thank you so much! I love WLOP and when I studied his art in detail as you did, it was a surprise to see how the details were painted. I'm very obsessive with that part in my paintings and the detailing take me so long that at the end, I feel tired and bored and don't finish, which is really sad. So it was a real master class and eye opener for me to see WLOP's process, and how is not necessary to paint every single thing, but better dominate lighting, color and composition. And yes! I would love to watch a series about this with other artists. The ones that made me love digital painting were Linda Bergkvist and Melanie Delon. Linda is no longer active in the art world (as far as I know), but she inspired so many people to enter into this, that it would be nice to see a disection of her artwork too. So as Melanie's, of course :D

WLOP is one of my favorite artists, and you are my favorite art instructor, so you have no idea how excited I am to see this video. The specific thing that I love about his art is the story telling in it. It is rarely just "pretty girl is pretty" but usually there is a narrative in it - particularly if you know his writing and recognize the characters from there. The high rez stuff serves as sort of an epilogue for them. Would love to see a study on some old school fantasy artists, but not sure how much there is about them. Folks like Elmore, Easley, or Franzetta. They don't really do digital work though. A personal favorite of mine who does digital but no one really knows is Christopher Hastings.
