Enjoyed this video. I purchased several doors the same as the ones in the video and was a bit stressed about painting them. Thank you for the biggest tip which was to make sure you only use the tip of the brush and to feather the paint. This was a huge tip for me, so thank you I feel more confident about painting my doors now :)

Thanks for the tip about keeping the brushes in plastic bags. That's gold! Saved all the time and mess of having to clean them at the end of the day.

Always carry a wet rag too I don’t know if he mentioned that in the video.

Also, use clingfilm and then in a plastic bag especially if you’re using oil based or paint for wood or metal.

Ozito $40 corded paint sprayer works amazing too. Few swipes over the door with water based enamel paint, then let it dry, then go for the second coat within the next 5-10 minutes. I recommend doing a primer though if the door has not been painted before and has been freshly bought from the shop

Brilliant video! Thanks very much for all the great tips. I thought about taking the doors off but then thought it would be too much bother, however after watching your video it makes so much sense! I prefer brush on the whole door in older homes, most rollers leave a textured finish and I don't care for the outcome. A smooth broiler is certainly fine.

Good video, I like this guy. You do not have to make as many short frenetic strokes as he makes like they do in India. I like longer smoother strokes.I use PPG (glidden) gripper on varnished doors as a primer as it is real strong in 2 days whereas zinzzer 123 will fail and some expensive primers and most paint primers in one only work if it is not the laquer type finish i have on some varnished looking oak. I rolled and then quickly brushed smooth on cabinets, but on doors couldn't do it quick enough so I rolled with 1/4" (9" long) cover. Overall, good video.

Normal you would paint the 4 panels first. Then top rail mid rail then bringing down the lock stile hinge stile then finishing with the bottom rail. 👍🏻

Thanks a bunch for the tutorial. Our builder made a mess out of the door and isn't willing to fix it. Going to give it a try myself. One question. May sound silly coz I've never done this before. Our door is dark brown. Can it be painted into a lighter shade ?

Hi, you can do that however it will take multiple Coats to have full coverage or you can put an undercoat on first 👍

Hi nice video i painted my door with Behr Premium paint and primer in one but the problem is it very easily get stain and if one hand is not clean touching it it stay i am just wondering if there is some clear finish to apply so the stain can be easily cleared thanks

Doors need to be painted with an enamel paint. It’s hard wearing and cleans much easier 👍

Hi, I store them in a plastic bag if I’m going to reuse the brush with the same paint within a few days as it won’t dry out in the plastic bag. Other than that I always wash the brushes 👍

Hey Bill, I've noticed there was no sanding or any undercoat used? Is that not required with water based enamels? Will a water based enamel stick onto an already oil enamel coated surface without sanding or undercoat similar to the way you have done in your video?

Hi, no sanding is required. Regarding an undercoat, this only needs to be applied if you are changing colors from a dark existing color to a new lighter color. On a new door a primer is generally required, however most door come pre primed from the factory. I always choose an enamel paint which is an all in one paint and primer. Painting over an oil based door with a water based product you will need to lightly sand the existing door followed by a primer and then the water based paint ( or use the all in one paint and primer). 👍

Well, I wouldn't just paint a door as he has. I mean there was no prep on the door at all. I would have lightly sanded the door and cleaned it with sugar soap. His brushwork is good though.

I find the door will stick badly to the horse when you flip to paint the other side....bolt the top and bottom and the bolts rest on the horse.....no sticking.

I know this is old but a foam roller is best to do Gloss based. Mine was oil based gloss so it does a pretty clean job. Also learned the hard way.

Why do you prefer water based enamel? Which is better oil based or water based?

I find oil paints slightly more durable however , water based paints are easier to use, cleaning up can be done with water (washing brushes) and dry time is about an hour . Oil based paint has a dry time of 12-24 hours depending on weather conditions.
