Join me as I paint this beautiful grey heron watching over her eggs. I show you in real time how to paint the bird, the tree branch and leaves, the grasses and the nest, in a simple to follow style.
The colours I used were:
Raw Umber tinyurl.com/y4...
Paynes Grey tinyurl.com/tz...
Cobalt Blue tinyurl.com/hr...
Permanent Rose tinyurl.com/bn...
Sap Green tinyurl.com/33...
Quinacridone gold tinyurl.com/2b...
Plus waterproof pen for the line work:
Staedtler Pigment Liner tinyurl.com/yr...

List of Recommended Materials and Equipment from Jacksons Art
PAPER
Both these papers (Bockingford and Langton) are ideal for learning to paint, as they offer correct response from the watercolour paint, and yet allow corrections and alterations which more expensive papers do not permit. You need Cold Pressed (NOT) paper. Choice of size is up to you, as is the format.
BOCKINGFORD : GLUED PAD : A4 (8 x 11 ins): 300GSM (140lb): 12 SHEETS : NOT (Cold Pressed Medium Texture) £8
This paper is ideal for beginners as it is tough yet responsive. It is easy to make corrections on this paper, which has an attractive and distinctive texture. It is available in lots of sizes and as pads, blocks and sheets. It is available in Hot Pressed, NOT and Rough.
Here is a link to an A4 glued pad (NOT texture) tinyurl.com/w8...
DALER ROWNEY: LANGTON : A4 (8 x 11 ins) 300gsm (140lb): 12 SHEETS:NOT (Cold Pressed Medium Texture £8.50
The Langton is a high-quality watercolour paper ideal for beginners. The paper is colour-stable, mould-made and acid-free, and is designed to withstand repeated washes without pulping or cockling. It is available in three surfaces: Hot Pressed, NOT and Rough. It is available in pads, blocks and sheets. Here is a link to an A4 glued pad. tinyurl.com/h7...
BRUSHES
I use mainly round synthetic brushes. You will need sizes 5, 7, 11 and 14. I recommend the following brand: PRO ARTE PROLENE Series 101 or 007
Prolene brushes use refined synthetic fibres specially developed by Pro Arte. A popular and versatile brush. Available in a full range of sizes and shapes. Click on link to see more.
PRO ARTE : PROLENE PLUS : SERIES 007 : ROUND : SIZE 7 £5.33
Improved colour holding and pointing properties. Set in a beautiful ferrule which is plated with gold. Polished teak handle completes the brush. Here is a link to a size 7.
tinyurl.com/be...
PRO ARTE : PROLENE PLUS : SERIES 101 : ROUND : SIZE 7 £5
Used mainly for watercolour, they are exceedingly hardwearing and unlike sable, will not damage easily. Finished with seamless nickel ferrules, and black polished handles with gold tips. Here is a link to a size 7.
tinyurl.com/nb...
Here is a link to a Winsor and Newton starters' paint box which would be ideal for a beginner.
12 colours: amzn.to/3a1IVko
This is a link to a Winsor and Newton Artists' quality box, which is ideal for a serious student.
24 colours: amzn.to/3tHJTKI
12 colours: amzn.to/3rC0IVj
TUBE PAINTS
I always have a tube of White Designers Gouache on hand for lights and corrections
amzn.to/2MZnqYK
These colours are very useful and don't usually appear in the sets the manufacturers make:
Naples Yellow
amzn.to/2NhAxEy
Quinacridone Gold
amzn.to/3qb3FMs
Permanent Rose
amzn.to/3d27oYK
Indigo
amzn.to/2Zl1YAl
Sepia
amzn.to/3jHnHvG
-
PAPER
Winsor and Newton Watercolour paper pad 140lb 9 x 12 inches ideal for all watercolour techniques.
amzn.to/3cTf3Zu
Canson MONTVAL watercolour paper block 140lb 9 x 12 inches ideal for all watercolour techniques. Exceptional resiliance and easy to work with.
amzn.to/2Z0iOnM
BRUSHES
Princeton do a good range of synthetic squirrel brushes. This is a size 10 round.
amzn.to/3q6Y35F
And Winsor and Newton Cotman brushes are also good. This is a size 10 round.
amzn.to/36Xn8Zb
I often use a rigger brush (called script liner in the US) and this is a link to the Cotman range of riggers, this is size 1.
amzn.to/3a0nikC
A size 3 would also be useful.
amzn.to/3q4O14Z
Staedtler Noris Karat Aquarell black watercolour pencils

Diane, I was hiking with a friend yesterday and we walked by a beautiful Great Blue Heron. She was in a fielded area close to water and trying to catch whatever little critters were hiding underground. We were close enough to snap some pictures and I was just in awe. I remembered that you'd painted this bird and so I decided to watch it again today and try painting it myself. After reading about this bird, I'm really interested in them. They use that long beak to spear their prey. I didn't realize their diets were so diverse. They love fish and rodents. Yum :) haha - this tutorial is so peaceful and the painting is gorgeous!

My 205th. Again nice editing😊: a video of a heron life, the music and the sound of real birds (open studio door or window probably. After all the wind and rain it is moodlifting. Again a successful nice painting with lots of possibilities to work with. T😊hanks 😊Wim

Great blue heron. I love them from years of living on lake in Massachusetts. You did a wonderful heron and I felt you read my mind as yesterday I was thinking of doing one in watercolor. I watch all your videos here in Florida since finding your channel, and love the flowers - I am a flower and color person - birds too. And dragonflies which was how I found you. Interesting how one can watch videos for more than a year and then find new artists. You make it seem easy but that is because it’s you! This is my first comment to you, I rarely do them but seeing the heron felt so happy I wanted to tell you. Love your intro today btw, farm scenes, yay! Also, I love England and spent weeks traveling around there… wish I lived there! Cheers!

Hi Barbara, thanks so much for your comments, I feel absolutely honoured that you’ve chosen and decided to follow me and even better still to comment on the channel! It means so much to me to have such positive feedback from people who are touched by what I do. It helps me realise I am doing something right! I try to incorporate everybody’s ideas into my projects, and hearing from folk like you that you love colour and flowers and nature is really really helpful. As you say it is easy to overlook some people on RU-vid, and we are battling that all the time because there are a few who seem to dominate, and it’s hard to get past that barrier - myself I started off by watching people like Paul Clark and Karen Rice, but I kind of knew that I could do something different from them and that’s maybe how we would be found and seen. Thank goodness - and especially thanks to people like you we are beginning to be seen! Thanks also for mentioning the intro, the video is all thanks to my daughter who does all the work that is to say all the video editing work! And a lot of the creativity comes from her. All I have to do is paint! Again thanks ever so much and I look forward to your next comment! And if you have any suggestions for subjects you can either send them telepathically or put them in a comment! Oh by the way do you know that we have a Facebook group with 16,000 members and also a website where you can get the tracings if you want to download the sketches that I do for free!

@@DianeAntoneStudio thanks much for the lovely reply. Loved the wisteria also. Give your daughter👏 a pat on the back for me as she is doing a fabulous job. The blue flower at the end of this one is gorgeous and the flying heron likewise. Your painting seems effortless, your voice so calm, you do not stress or try to make every little detail just so, you don’t fuss with expensive paint choices. You just get on with it - which makes me want to try a new subject. Your love of nature shines through. I hope you get more notice, remind people to give you “likes” because it’s easy to forget. You are better than so many, who maybe have been doing this longer. I feel that maybe it’s helpful 🤫to chose key words for titles so it pops up in searches because if you notice, the videos of various people have more views when they paint popular subjects mentioned in the titles,🎨🌹etc. I have hand arthritis, so hardly write at all anymore but fun to communicate with you. What area of England is your farm in? No need for long reply as I know you are busy…
@DianeAntoneStudio
@DianeAntoneStudio 3 года назад
Thanks Barbara! That’s very kind of you to say. We do try to put the right keywords in the titles, and I’m curious to know what you searched for when we popped up for you? It’s always helpful to know what actually shows up. We spend quite a lot of time trying to figure out the best thing to put in the title, and still we show up very poorly in search. Too much competition! But it’s okay, we are growing quite fast, and are very happy with the way it is going. While you’re still a little bit on the smaller side you can communicate with people so much better, and that’s what it’s all about! Sorry to hear about the arthritis, I’ve got a couple of fingers which are playing up too like that but luckily they are not yet not interfering with my painting! We are actually living in Brittany, in North western France. I’m originally from London and the south of England, but before we came here we were living in Devon. I would have loved to be able to have land in England but we could never afford it!

I recently moved to an area where I see animals every day that I last saw in the wild in my old home more than 40 years ago. Today I am privileged, to have, among other things, at least one field hamster in the orchard, to see a great variety of birds of prey, wild swans and geese, flying past my window, or herons and cranes just standing there in the meadow. Beautiful. Then there is Diane. She just pulls such wonderful pictures out of her hat. I'm sitting here biting a paintbrush in frustration and anger because I can't create something so beautiful 🥴🥴🥴🥴

I am brand new to watercolor (came from photography) and love your loose style and color choices. Yours are my fav tutorials. But I wonder why you chose pink for the beak and chest. I'm learning that watercolors don't have to be true to life, it's better that they aren't. I've photographed many herons and they have bright yellow eyes and beaks. Of course that wouldn't work in your painting and I have to get over distractions.
