How to Paint a Spotlight Effect

James Gurney

James Gurney explains how to focus the light on one part of a plein-air painting of a 1962 Chevy Impala. He starts with a casein underpainting and paints the first washes with a limited palette of watercolor, then introduces some gouache passages for the final details.
He also demonstrates these effects using a white cube in actual sunlight, blocking some of the light with a cardboard frame, and showing what happens when the sun goes behind a cloud.

I am now positive that you are the Bob Ross of watercolor. You hit all the criteria- 1. You’ve got a satisfying voice 2. You videos aren’t abrasive 3. Talent, you’ve got lots of that. 4. Nice antidotes that keep you entertained. 5. Probably the most important, your authentic. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful art.

The guy across the street from me had one of those 62 Impalas but his was the two-door. He put an L88 Corvette engine in it and damn near killed himself hotrodding around town in it. Your painting is so nice and is exactly what one would see while walking through a dark parking lot with the overhead lights casting pools of illumination around and on top of the various cars at night. Thanks for this.

The physical demonstration of lighting scenarios made my brain snap to attention, super effective summation of a broad subject. I'm a digital artist so I think my brain is badly craving real, dimensional knowledge.

James, what you're calling "ambient occlusion", I've called a "dark accent". Good to learn new terminology. Love the instruction.
@leandrotarsia7212
@leandrotarsia7212 4 года назад
Dark accent is not wrong if you use it in the context of compositional choices. Ambient occlusion is an area of the geometry that won't be receiving as much ambient bouncing light as the rest of the scene. It's a scientific term that's also heavily used in 3D rendering and video games.

James ... " Let me take you to the studio " ... is a wonderfully cinematic cut. It is so so Japanese cinema, where in the middle of a Samurai battle, we pause suddenly before the battle and we cut to a quiet preparation for the battle done long ago... and then we resume to the battle. You are a Samurai Master of Gouache ! Looking forward to more cinematic magic. Kudos for the added drama of non linear time.

The thing I really admire about highly skilled and professional artists like Mr. Gurney is that they have the ability to knock out a quality painting in a single session. I have enough skill as a painter to do something along similar lines as this painting, but I'd literally spend months in the process, using oil paints, going back and forth trying to get it right. The last painting I did I spent almost a year on. It's why I never became a professional artist.

I was planning on taking up painting after i retired but hadn't decided what medium to concentrate on, I think I'll start with the cheapest thing close to gouache, cheap tempera paint, black white, dark brown to start. My abilities don't merit the expense of even cheap gouache. I love the idea of using index cards for quick studies and practice. I've got a jillion of those that will never be used for anything else. Your instructional videos are about the best and there are lots of good ones. I was tempted to try transparent watercolor first but didn't want pencil and wash effects, opaque looks more like what I want. I love your studies.
