This easy to understand painting tutorial is designed for watercolorists of any ability or experience level.
I try to cover some basic watercolour theory that applies to all subjects, as well as some bird specific tricks & tips to help you improve and progress your own watercolour paintings.
The Puffin, or more specifically in this case, the Atlantic Puffin, must be one of the most recognisable and loved seabirds out there. Certainly here the UK.
With the strong black and white shapes contrasting the more refined but very colourful areas, they make a truly wonderful painting subject.
I try to use a simple approach these watercolours as we are looking for great results but with freshness and excitement to the way we use the paint.

Great demo, liked the 1.5 speed and really like the split screen showing your palette and mixing techniques etc. Tips on darks were enlightening especially why opaque colours don't produce good darks. I have some photos of a young Nuthatch, so my pick would be a Nuthatch for a future demo

I adore puffins so this was a joy for me to watch but I did learn so many points as well, particularly the idea of using the blues for darks rather than black. I also understand now the importance of combining detail with abstract to make a piece more interesting. Thank you for an informative tutorial.

Thank you for this great tutorial. I did it for Margot Loft’s Tom Shepherd challenge. I love how you simplify things and the lesson on creating blacks was so helpful. I jotted down a few notes. Going to Iceland soon so had to choose this one! I would love to see you paint an acorn woodpecker. We have a lot of them where we live and they are so dramatic in looks and behavior!

Yes Puffins are beautiful birds but I learnt today, there are two Countries that slaughter Puffins and one even eats them! Horrified and deeply Upsetting for Puffins actually ‘Trust’ humans and will eat from our hands and recognise you and get to know you. I just did the Puffin drawing yesterday that I found on Your New Art School (which I am a member) and I intend to paint it today. So thank you for another great tutorial. 🐝🐝

Dear Tom.. I've been a great fan of your work.. both as an artist and an excellent teacher..ive been folowing your bird series especially.and desperately need help..well my colours are not as bright as your and the colours dont mix or merge together even in wet on wet techniques . Wat do you think is the problem..quality of paints or the paper..ive been using Pelican paints..n various brands 300 g paper
@tomshepherdartist
@tomshepherdartist 8 месяцев назад
Firstly. Thank you for the kind words. The issue could be with a few things. It’s hard to tell without being there in person. It may be not quite enough water in the mix to encourage wet in wet. Paint consistency is so key in watercolour. It could well be materials issue. I don’t know pelican paints. Are they a budget paints? Sometimes cheaper paints don’t behave as they should. Often if you are using very opaque colours they can be heavier and more dense and behave very differently, as well as make heavy mixes if not used with caution. What paper are using? Paper can make such a huge difference. More so than paints in many ways. T

Could you try to paint a mallard or wood duck drake in breeding plumage? Specifically do you think you could show a realistic iridescence using only watercolor pigments with no type of Mica or iridescent treatments of any kind? I'm thinking of the wood duck drake in water and with a dramatic sunrise or sunset. This beautiful Puffin piece is very, very nice! I wish I could be free to paint in that way! You do it so well! I started out as a self I taught watercoloist where I tried other mediums. The 2 mediums I loved to work in were pastels (being a pastelist) and hand-painting on 100% silk. Painting on silk is most simi!lar to painting on Arches 140# up and stea Do you think you could try to create a wood duck drake in water with dramatic lighting showing the iridescent areas? I do love how free and with ease you paint your pieces. You have beautiful technique. Thank you for generously sharing your skills and beautiful gifts with us. God Bless!
@tomshepherdartist
@tomshepherdartist 3 года назад
Hi Denise. Thank you for such a lovely comment and the kind words! I’ve never used pastels and the silk painting sounds very intriguing!? It has taken me along time to break away and be more free!! I used to do very painstaking and detailed work believe it or not!! If you’re intention is to loosen and free up, you will get there! Just stick at it :) Wood duck and mallard are both on the list all ready and I think realistic iridescence, with normal pigment, is a great theme for them!!....I find it very hard to do!!! But I will give it my best shot. And even if it doesn’t work it gives a good talking point. Kind Regards Tom

@tomshepherdartist
@tomshepherdartist 3 года назад
Hi Sheila! I do know the feeling, your best bet is just dive straight in!! The best time I find to paint a piece is directly after drawing it...you keep momentum that way and also not putting it on a pedestal, so by the time we get to it we’ve put so much pressure on ourselves!!!....if you are really happy with a drawing you could consider tracing it, then if you really mess up the painting you can very quickly and easily using the tracing on to another piece. Knowing this you may find helps with being less scared of ruining the first one, and as a result will probably be less likely too!! Of the joys of watercolour!! Good luck. Hope that helps :)

Puffins remind me of sad but wise old men soaking up the sun. You caught the expression perfectly. One and a half times isn't bad but too fast is a total waste of time. I stopped watching time lapsed vids. I watch the vids in order to hear and really see. I'm the odd man out though. What do I know?
