As my country, South Africa is notorious for its oak trees, I've never attempted it. Thank you SO much. I think I will make a scene with the oak tree as the focal point.
Loved the tutorial! It’s helping me a lot on getting the idea for a tree that I am painting. I’m having trouble creating those “leaves” on the tree since I’m drawing on a bigger scale (it’s almost like a mural tree). What kind of brush would you recommend for a much bigger tree and have almost the same effect that you have on your video? I’m painting it on a canvas, I’m using acrylics and... I just erased the whole thing right now :( because at the end it seemed like I was just painting big dots for the highlights.

John, Today I managed to paint one good tree. Although my tree is no way as nice as yours, but I was so happy, I tape it on the wall anyway.(I use canvas paper) . Thank you for your tutorial, I really improve a lot. And I practice MANY times to improve my skill. You are right, just keep practicing.
Thanks so much for a great tutorial. But the brush you are painting with most of the tree, looks much softer than a normal number 11 bristle flat brush, which it is hard and unyelding. In any case, I can only get your results if I paint the leaves with a natural bristles brush or with a fan brush.
Yes, from what I figured watching his videos, when he mentions bristle hair brush he mostly means natural bristles. For synthetic he specifically mentions as nylon. So the flat brush he is using in the video is mostly a natural bristle haired brush

John I love your videos and style. Do you let each layer dry before moving from shadow tone, to mid tone, then highlights? I needed this video for a recent painting that I was struggling to get an oak tree right. This video really helped. Thanks for your content John. 👍🏼
you're welcome... you can let it dry of add layers when it's still wet.. but acrylics dry very fast so no need to wait it dry just add the layers when it's haft wet...
