The best way to improve your watercolor paintings is to improve your handling of value. Improving your values means your contrasts are stronger and your painting stands out! If you're struggling with paintings that feel flat and lifeless, try starting with a value study and learning to push your contrasts as you vision your painting in shades of grey, black and white.
In this lesson, I'm using water-soluble graphite to paint architecture. It's a bit out of my comfort zone, so keeping to one colour helps me to focus my attention on painting the shapes and values that I see.

I have watched this value study twice and ordered the water-soluble graphite. It arrived today and I can't wait to try it out. Thanks so much for the lesson.

I love the phrase 'Value does all the work and colour gets the credit' - monochromes are a brilliant way of exploring a subject. Hadn't thought of using graphite for them though. Thank you!

I think what I love most is watching you do this without a speeding up that can make it so much harder to try. Also not having to feel the painting needs to be an exact photo style copy but a lovely personal expression of what you see. I do find values tricky and this is so well explained I can try it. Thank you so much❤️

You're so right that learning how to work more precisely - monochromatically speaking - makes you a better artist. So true!

Thank you for this great lesson on value! And I love painting architecture. It was amazing to see how you brought out details just with the values.

Glad to see this. I really enjoy my artgraf water-soluble, have their 3 piece set (carbon, graphite and white) Carbon being my fave, less shine when dry. I agree with the texture it gives 😁

Hi Angela, thank you for this presentation. Architecture both fascinates & frightens me. I appreciate seeing you paint & I’m inspired & better equipped to make another attempt. 😊

I love how the graphite gives that rough stone texture. Great job!

Many thanks for another valuable lesson. I must say that I absolutely enjoyed staring at the photo, the beautiful textures and so many interesting contrasts. There is so much detail in one small area! You picked a difficult subject but for a value study, it's a great one! O yeah, I gotta get some water-soluble graphite, just like that. Thanks again!

This was a great exercise! I really over detail my architecture and was actually just thinking of this very topic. I may have an opportunity to do some traveling again this summer and want to do some watercolor sketching. This was a perfect example of what I need to practice... Thank you.

Thanks for this inspirational demo! I really like your simple approach - I am not big on painting buildings either, and always feel the angles challenging - your demo gave me new inspiration to push myself to practice these subjects again. I don't have the watercolor graphite, but I have found that I like to use the black Tombow pen for these types of value studies. They are also easy to take on the go with a water brush to keep it simple.

Good reminder for B&w study. I thought I had it in my last painting. Now I see that I really didn’t simply enough. Have to put in not done pile, and start on a new architectural painting. Thanks for this excersise, I need more practice.

I love working with Value Studies, (thanks for the classes on that in your Watercolor Mastery class.) There were times where I thought I didn't need a value study, and the painting would not be what I was hoping for, so I would re-do it with a value study and then wha-lah like magic (not really) my paintings were composed stronger, I knew where my focus needed to be and I could be a bit more intuitive by looking at my value study more than my reference photo! Value Studies are so important! Great video on learning your process on how to see the value!

Thank you for pointing the values out in this demo. I do forget about the light values as I'm painting. You reminded me I have to do more value study's. Oh by the way I love drawing with grafite and I do have water soluble but haven't worked with it much but I will.😊 Thanks again.

You mentioned that this could also be done w/a neutral or grey eg. Paynes Gray. Is there a specific advantage to the water-soluble graphite?

I think the graphite gives it more texture, but there are some really neat Primatak colors from Daniel Smith that may be close to the watercolor graphite. Just my opinion :)

I really do struggle with value. I would be interested in seeing you develop your painting from this study, Would you paint from your reference photo or just from the value study....or both? Thank you, Angela.
