Clouds are challenging to paint. Maybe a bit daunting yet important in any landscape painting. I like how you shared your dry brush technique to create fluffy 3d-looking clouds. Cheers!
This is exactly what I’ve been looking for for this type of cloud. I haven’t been able to figure them out. This is amazing! I’m excited to view this video over and over and then attempt them. What’s so funny is that I watched these clouds get painted. I saw it happen. Yet…..I look at them as they form more and more and think “What the heck? Did I blink? How’d he do that? How is there suddenly a perfect, realistic cloud??” Even though I just watched how it was done. Skill like this blows my mind. It’s nothing and then WHAM it’s like a photo. Whaaaaaaat?? AMAZING! Thank you for this wonderful insight into how you paint clouds!
Thanks a lot :-))) I let the first layer dry completely, it really needs to be bone dry. And as a medium I am meanwhile using only linseed oil on my water mixable oils. Sounds stupid, but I need the longer drying time, really can`t stand it when the colour dries up so quick that you can not blend it properly.
Thank you :-))) No, I will not stop, dont worry :-) And yes...its not easy talking in a foreign language without any script (simply do not have the time to make REALLY elaborate videos in which everything is just perfect) - but I keep on painting and hopefully getting better at it :-)))
I t is the fine details that you incorporate in your tutorials that really bring the paintings to life. I strive to attempt your patience and talent. Thanks again :)
Veru helpful, thank you so much, am at my first clouds, see you at the MOMA Roberto (Malaga) PS U r invited for lunch or dinner with your companion of course.
Hi How long do you leave your background to dry before doing your clouds? (I haven't used oils before). Could this technique of yours come out as good with acrylics? I'm new to all this. What would be your go-to colours you use (I have noted the colours at the beginning) for your cloud pictures? All the gear and no idea! (Yet). Thank you.
As long as the background needs to completely dry - and I mean bone dry, not just a bit dry. A couple of days, even a week or two if the painting has to dry in a cold area. You could use drying retarder for your acrylics, this might helpt to extend the drying time but as I did not use any drying retarder in my "acrylics days" I have no idea if this will work. I use the same 7 colours for all of my paintings: Titanium White, Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Red, Raw Sienna, Dioxazine Purple, Phthalo Blue and Lamp Black. You`re welcome :-)
I started to paint well over 30 years ago....but I had some "dry" episodes where I did not touch any brush for years (ove 8 years and then another episode where I stopped painting for another 2 years). So all in all I have around 20 years of painting under my belt.
Great art but really frustrating to snatch away within 2 seconds the image of the final art. Can we see the 'entire canvas' when finished, not just a fleeting glimpse of it.
You can :-))) But it is way more difficult than painting with oils...acrylics are basically dry the moment you put them on...so you have to layer, you can hardly blend them if you do not add some drying retarder. Therefore I always recommend to switch to oils - it is really a lot easier than with acrylics!
Even if I use acrylics, your tutorial was so incredibly helpful for me, from the beginner point of view. Thank you so much, you truly are good at the craft :)
It's a fantastic way of doing clouds. What oil medium are you taking. When you do your sky, do you let it dry ? or you begin right after ? Thank you for you advise, if you have time to give it to me and others.
Thank you Angie :-))) I am solely using linseed oil (no harsh thinner like turpentine or white spirirt, this stuff is going to kill you if you paint a lot like I do). I apply the first layer, the blue of the background, let this layer dry completely for a couple of days (bone dry, rather 5 more days of waiting than the second layer of colour lifting off the first layer of colour) and then I apply the next layer of colour. The next layer needs to be nearly the pure paint out of the tube, it really needs to cover the blue of the background so do just use a hint of oil to give the colour a little bit of a better flow.
I’m really struggling with getting my sky flat (I get brush strokes) and then not ruining it when I blend the clouds. Do you use any medium for this? And how long do you leave to dry? I’m using Alkyd, but thinking of switching to Artisan when doing the sky
I use linseed oil but in the stage of the underpainting not that much, just a few drops to give the colour a better flow. I use very big brushes (1-2 inch, VERY soft ones) to blend the colours and to get a very flat surface. Give this method a try - and do not apply a lot of pressure while blending, just like petting a parrot, VERY soft and VERY gentle movements with hardly any pressure at all, it flows more or less...hard to explain. I am pretty much like you when it comes to visible brush stroke marks...I do NOT like them opposed to other artists that even use some medium to enhance that "artisty brush stroke" look.
It depends...when you use water it takes a few days, if you take oil (what I prefer meanwhile) it takes a few days more. And it needs to be warm, so in winter time it takes even longer.
Every time i want to paint clouds i come back to your videos. The fact that you can do this is just extraordinary Your eyes see things we simple people dont. Its just amazing !!!! I hope to have your skill someday
Thank you so much :-))) And keep on painting...it all boils down to the amount of time you spend in front of your easel...determination and perseverence can easily surpass raw talent!
@@10arieli water mixable oils - a kind of oil colour that can be blended with oil but also with water. Although I prefer to use oil to thin down the colour meanwhile not water - that leaves me much more time to blend.
Hi Susan, I`m using here water mixable oils from Winsor&Newton (link is in the description box). I am using here Titanium White, Cadmium Red, Phthalo Blue, Dioxazine Purple and Lamp black. I am mixing all the colours with this selection.
Thank you!!! I'm attempting to do this with acrylics, although I know it's not going to be so easy not able to blend as easily as with oil based paints. The purple colors you're using for shading are beautiful
@@susanbothwell2234 Thank you :-))) Yes, you will need to drybrush a lot to blend the colours really nice with your acrylics. But stay patient and I bet it will come out really nice :-)))
First, I enjoy your videos not only for the excellent instructions and great video demonstrations but also just to hear you talk. 🥰 I was hoping that you could provide the paint colors in your videos. The tubes of paint used are flashed so quickly it is impossible to read. One screen of a list of the colors would be more helpful.
Thank you so much Ruth and Michael :-))) I will include a little list of the colours that I use - that truly is a good idea, the small letters on the tubes are really hard to read.
Very, very realistic! You definitely have studied a lot of clouds in order to capture such realism. What are the brushes that you were using? Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
I`m sorry, but I don`t have any acrylics as I even use my water mixable oils for the underpainting now. So there will unfortunately be no acrylic painting tutorials on this channel, sorry.
Thank you :-))) Yes, I let the underpainting completely dry before I apply the next and final layer with the clouds. Takes a few days with the water mixable oils but you need to do it, otherwise it is not possible, the colours would become one big mess.
You can use whatever you like better ;-))) I personally prefer a more matte varnish, when the varnish is too glossy, the painting reflects like crazy and it is nearly impossible to get a decent photo of it.
Amazing cloud tutorial! I plan to support you indeed. I have one question at the moment, I work in acrylics, in this video are using oil or acrylics? Thanks in advance.
Thank you Kate - the bigges support would be joining my Patreon www.patreon.com/brennerfineart I am using here oil colour (water mixable oil colour due to health reasons but mixed with linseed oil)
I know you're speaking English but, I'm listening in "Yankee"! Don't understand half of what you're saying and the other half is 'mumbled' as if too close to the 'mike'! Otherwise, what is the surface you're using? Good luck in the future!
I fully understand and appreciate that you are quite right to sell your tutorials and I’m sure they are worth every penny but if you could put a freebie cloud on (that’s a little more detailed) I would love it please ❤ fantastic painting , hope you don’t take offence to my cheeky ask 😂👍
Thanks for your reply 👍 I appreciate it, I must admit I’m the classic class of someone who has never picked up a brush and after watching you make it look easy I have convinced myself I will be able to produce something as good as yours 😂😂 I’m trying to forget the fact that you have been perfecting your skills for your entire life 😂👍 thanks again for your reply and I will be giving it a go over my Christmas break
Trying this with acrylics is a lot more difficult than trying it with oils. Save some money and get water mixable oils, they are FAR BETTER than acrylics, believe me, far easier to work with as they are not the moment dry you put them on the canvas. You have a lot more time to blend and get the volume in that is needed to paint in a realistic way.
Hi Alexandre, I come from Germany, the land with one of the worst english pronounciations in the world ;-))) So - I`m sorry for this and I will try in the future to not get carried away talking about painting all the time getting faster and faster!
Vielen Dank!
@@brennerfineart i could not find any tutorial on acrylic painting of clouds, from you. I tried with acrylic, but it dries very fast..even if i wetten the brush or paper. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and taking time to make these superior videos. Thnks/Marcus
@@marcusroth4272 I have no acrylic painting tutorials as I solely use oils. Acrylics are a nightmare...they do not stay true to their wet appearance AND you can not blend at all...you can work around with a drying retarder for acrylics...but I am not sure, that this will not make the colours look different...and perhaps those mediums are not healthy at all...I paint with oil colour and thin it down with linseed oil to make sure I do not harm myself while painting.
Thank you for answering. Thought it was only me who had problem blending and fading them. Maybe i try oil paint, but if i can find oil paint that is not harmful.. thanks/Marcus
So amazing 😊👍 Nd i really like ur all paintings if i am at ur place I do painting with you bcos this is my wish nd i also want to learn realistic painting from you but unfortunately i am not at your place
Thank your Manisha :-))) Just watch the videos, that I will publish every sunday and I am sure you will pick up so much that it will safe you months or even years of try and error :-)))
Thank you :-))) The only way I found to really speed the drying time up is to lay the painting into direct sunlight (in summertime, it needs to be warm). I did this for the first time this year and do not know if this might perhaps harm the colour pigments...but I simply had to and it really helped. Another "trick" is to just work on several paintings at the same time frame - that`s what I do meanwhile and it really works. Not only do the paintings have enough time (days or even weeks) time to dry, I can change the subject matter from painting to painting at this also helps to keep the motivation up every time you sit on the easel.
Klasse deine Tutorials.
Hi Tobias, WOW😳so realistic clouds.... Amazing, please, can I know what color you use under white on palette😏blu, red and white OR, cerulean blu with purple???? Thank you, 😁HI... Meister👍👋🎨
With acrylics you need to layer, as the drying time is far shorter than with oils...but with enough layering it should be possible to produce a similar result I guess (I just paint with oils, stepped away from the acrylics decades ago ;-))
Ganz toll!
