Thank you so much. I followed every bit of advice, used every recommended product and it came out amazing. I made one change. I hired a light scaffold system , designed for painting two stories. That way I was able to repair every crack , even small ones. Power washing was simple. So here is my theory. I don't think you can properly roller paint an upstairs with a extension , from the ground. If you think of it , you are 20 feet away from the point of contact. Pressing at the end of the extension, but at the top , where the roller is. You are just barely forcing paint on the wall. But with the scaffold, I was able to force the paint into every nook and cranny, every tiny little hole. Thanks again. Saved me a fortune and I have the best painted house on the street.

I used to be a painter, we always used most of the materials you have, I always had/have purdy brushes, nice to see you wash the building down, I’ve seen lots of people paint over dirty buildings and wonder why it was coming off 6 months later.

I’ve been doing the roller spinning thing for a while but in a deep bucket to catch most of the spray. If you can’t be bothered to keep emptying it turn it into a flower pot and have it above a drain area or soak away but I do it this way so I can pour it into a soak away. Great video, large rollers are great!

The finished result looks great Charlie, you can’t see those cracks at all and the house looks very smart. Carrier bags are a good way of keeping the paint off the paint tray, it takes two to cover the tray (one for the tray and one inverted for the roller area), and if you leave the paint to dry on them you can then reverse and turn inside out for the next painting - works surprisingly well. I like the tip with the hosepipe to clean the roller, plus you give your bushes a protective coat of paint during the cleanup as well 😁

Thanks Geoffrey. Great tip that I'll have to try. So everyone's recommending the Dandy Roller and brush cleaner. I have heard about this but never got round to buying. Slightly kicking myself now though!
@MrWLJ71
@MrWLJ71 9 месяцев назад
@@CharlieDIYteHi Charlie, I have used the dandy cleaner.... TOP TIP - get some 100mm pvc pipe and a couple of sealable end stops (one for each length). Cut the pipe into a couple of 500-600mm lengths (just longer than your 18" roller). Fill one with water and leave the other dry. Spin your roller/brush in the water filled length... then spin dry off in the 'dry length' of pipe and this avoids you getting soaked by the spin off! If you only want to do one length for the dry spin off, you can of course just do that. But this method keeps the mess to a minimum! Hope it helps!

I normally cover them in the course of my work because I do find it very difficult to remove any paint lands on them as it penetrates into the tile there are some quite good products out there for covering different areas tiles roofs patios when working as a decorator thought this might be an interesting subject to cover in one of your future videos

Great video but missing any reference to PVA - necessity or not, and ratio if needed. Also, temperature - air temp v surface temp for application.

House looks fantastic Charlie! I painted the render on front of my cottage with Sandtex which was ok. I went to the trouble of sheeting and masking windows and door due to splatter risk. Did this product perform well in that respect? Great tips as per normal. Many thanks for your endeavours👍

Thanks James, that's a useful tip. There wasn't a lot of splattering but I did cover the lower sills, and the lower windows are coming out so I wasn't too bothered about them. I should have mentioned that. There's always something.

If you are going to dabble with an airless for small jobs then consider the Graco Ultra handheld. I personally use a Titan 440 but I do wish I had the hand held Grace because it it would handle 60% of what I do with easier cleanup.

To give a possibly unpopular view, I just sold on my Graco Ultra after having to replace the pump at an eye-watering £200 in just over a year from purchase. At over £600 I’m afraid I just don’t believe them to be fit for purpose (and I’m not the only one whose experienced Sue’s, just google reviews for it) and am now playing with a £30 hvlp sprayer, that although it has to have thinned down paint, is easier to clean and IMHO delivers comparable results to the Graco - oh and in a worst case scenario, it can be replaced for £30 - what’s not to like?!

You could try a random orbit sander with these amzn.to/3QPShEX I sanded my concrete floor recently to prepare it for the tiling, with these and they worked well.

Amazing work Charlie, I got this horrible coating on the render which I think is some sort of artex/latex coating but some of it is coming of now! Can I paint straight onto the render, I have removed some of the coating already?
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 2 года назад
Thanks. If the coating is loose you should revive as much as you can as otherwise the paint adhesion will only be as good as the coating on the render. Other than that though, provided the surface is clean, and free of mould etc, you should be able to paint on it.

You mean that plinth at the bottom? No I'm going to strip it off, rake out the mortar and then repoint. I might then wack some of that breathable Creme on it.
@gregorymacneil2836
@gregorymacneil2836 2 года назад
Nice work! I do wonder if a bit of bleach combined with the power washer would also have been good to tackle any light mold or algae. The emperor paint sounds similar to Kiem masonry paint. The breathability of paint is such a contentious issue. Temperature can effect the breathability of many paints. I think that no matter what you use there will be some issue with moisture - there does not seem to be a happy medium these days in building science - no one has the perfect climate inside or outside. But I do think that you did very good work on this project. Very impressed with the blending of the crack fillers.
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 2 года назад
Thanks Gregory. I'm forced to live with this tyrolean render like it or not although when I stripped off the external wall in the bedroom I'm kicking myself that I didn't repoint it as I don't want to say it's the source of those cracks but strengthening it would have undoubtedly helped. I just need to hack off those concrete plinths now, rake out the mortar and repoint. I might even use some of that Emperor Creme on them when I'm done. And then there's those remaining windows to replace. I'm having a bit of a nightmare with the new ones above (soft wood as that's what the budget would allow) as the paint isn't lasting 6 months on this south side of the house.

@brianb7636

Great video, thanks. I've been looking for paint to go on a lime rendered house and was going to buy Mapei or Keim (mineral) but I'll look at the Emperor stuff now. Just need to confirm that it will work over lime first. Snowcem is worth looking at and very cheap by comparison. They also send samples for colour testing but it's cement based and I can't find enough info on it beyond the manufacturers. How much of the Emperor did you need? Website recommends 90 litres for my 3-bed semi...that's £900!
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 2 года назад
Hi Brian, thanks for that. I've checked with the manufacturer and yes, it can be used on lime mortar thanks to its breathability. So they say 5-6m2 per litre and on textured surfaces it can be as little as 2-3. That wall you saw me paint used up 3/4 of a tub for the first coat. So just under a tub and a half for two coats I'd say. If painting over lime I'd be inclined to do just the one coat though as coverage is excellent.

@CharlieDIYte

Thanks. They look as good today as they did. There is one section where the resin didn't set properly - probably because I didn't squeeze out enough before starting. The stuff is fantastic though. I'd use it again and again. I also like the Toupret for larger repairs.

Recently painted a small Victorian gate house in Little Green masonry paint up here in the northern Scottish Highlands - the weather can be quite extreme here, so I'm monitoring how it performs. It was a pretty expensive option. If it's any good, I will be painting the main house, which is a lot larger at approx 5500sq.ft. of floor area. But I'm interested in buying an airless spray kit due to the size of the building.
