Just started using watercolours for the first time. This really helped me to understand how to let water run a not to spoil the painting by adding too much detail at the end.

The discipline is what Im struggling with now. Im so glad you mentioned that. I have been getting so frustrated with my work and I couldn't put a name to it. I fiddle too much & I get inpatient with layering and haven't been controlling my water on my brushes as I should. Thank you for the wake-up call. A true workout for a control freak ;)

Thank you so much for your comment Monica, I'm sure so many painters can identify with your struggle. I have been painting in watercolour for years and the one most important lesson I have learnt is... DON'T FIDDLE & LESS IS MORE. Hold back & don't try to perfect... hope this was helpful :)

So Lovely, Karen! I enjoyed watching your interpretation and the choice of colours. I notice many of the flower paintings with the backgrounds left unpainted. I personally feel the painting is unfinished. Can a background be added later, or is it preferable to put down some pale abstract colours and either block or carefully avoid the sketch of the flowers? How would you do that?
@KarenRiceArt
@KarenRiceArt 4 года назад
Thank you for your question... in my flower paintings I often leave the background white. If I am going to include a background, I would include it at the beginning stage of the painting. With the tulips demo, if I wanted to include a background now, I would wet it first and do as you have said put some pale abstract colours in wet in wet. :)

Thanks so much, Karen. Would love to see how to add a background after the painting is finished ;)

I love your videos! I am very new to watercolor and still in technique practicing mode. The one thing holding me back from diving in and starting an actual painting is knowing if I should start wet in dry or wet on wet. Is it somewhat a matter of preference, any advice? Might be a good topic for a video.
@KarenRiceArt
@KarenRiceArt 4 года назад
Thank you Dawn for your comment and question. It depends on the subject. But are usually start with wet on wet washes. I will take your suggestion/question into consideration on my next tutorial so thank you. Take care, happy painting :-)

Hi Karen, first, thank you for your lovely videos! How do I get rid of pencil marks in my watercolors? Thanks
@KarenRiceArt
@KarenRiceArt 4 года назад
Hi Joan, thank you so much! It can be tricky to get rid of pencil marks, but I have a few tips: 1: Try to rub them off when your painting is dry. 2: Draw very lightly, make as few marks as you can. 3: Don't use a hard or soft pencil (HB is best I think). 4: Don't use pencil, paint without drawing! That is the hardest! If anyone else has any tips, let us know? Thank you, and hope this was helpful :)

Do you always keep your pencil marks and paint over them? I have heard and seen different views on that. And do you always use a reference photo? Oh and beautiful painting by the way. Tulips are so unique and charismatic in their shades and colors. They were the theme for my wedding to which my husband and I are having our 21st-anniversary tomorrow.

Thank you for your comments Paula glad that you like the painting! I do leave pencil marks in my paintings, however when I paint for myself, I don’t often draw, I just go straight in with the painting believe it or not. I do often use a reference photograph, but I don’t slavishly copy it. I need something to look to inspire me. I hope this was helpful? Happy painting, take care :-)

What size mop brush is best?
@KarenRiceArt

Great question. It depends on the manufacturer. I would suggest getting a 1 inch hake brush to start 😀

Would a water soluble graphite pencil used lightly work for drawing out your flowers?
@KarenRiceArt
@KarenRiceArt 4 года назад
Hi Suzanne, I'm sure it would, sometimes it can be tricky if you make a mistake it in drawing, but otherwise fun to use :)

How do you decide what colour wash (if any) to put on for background? E.g. pale contrasting colours (orange/gold) or complimentary colours (light pink or green)
@KarenRiceArt
@KarenRiceArt 4 года назад
Thank you for your comment Lucy, regarding background washes for flowers. There are lots of different reasons I choose the colours that I do, however my advice for beginners is the following: choose a light soft colour that doesn’t clash with the flowers that you are painting. Hope this was helpful happy painting
