As we all know, in order to get better, we must practice. In today’s video, I’m sharing the mini (20 minute) practice session on wintry trees that I did before painting my final Paint With Me Challenge December watercolor piece.
The three versions of these winter trees are perfect to follow along with, so I hope you find this mini tutorial helpful!
Hope you’re able to practice some wintry trees with me!

Thank you. I live in a redwood forest and want to create something similar. I'm heading out to photograph the shapes of the trees now...they're quite different from spruce or any kinds of pine.

I love this tutorial. I have only been painting for a year, but wintery spruce scenery seems to be what I try the most often - possibly because that is what I am surrounded and inspired by. I love how you created the soft misty trees in the background. Off to try it right now! Thank you.

I am....speechless. I'm sure this sounds beyond cheesy, but watching that video was like watching some form of pure magic unfolding right before my eyes! Obviously, I'm BRAND new to watercolor. Been practicing techniques and attempted 3 paintings now. Would LOVE to get a real good handle on trees, flowers, etc. I'm mostly in awe if your tree with snow...absolutely unreal!!! What's most puzzling to me tho, is how you know exactly how to place and sketch the green parts so that the negative space will look exactly like snow. Any tips? My biggest challenge I'm worried will prevent me from ever being good at this is that I have very shaky hands. I watch a lot of videos and you all have such smooth, fluid movement with your brush strokes. Just hoping I'll figure out my own...unique technique/look(?) that my hands won't get in the way of. Sorry for such a long post. You just have me all exited....you are an amazing artist and TRULY inspirational!! 💕
@SusanChiang
@SusanChiang 3 года назад
Hi Brenda! You are so sweet thank you for the lovely comment! And I'm so excited for you - watercolors is just the most beautiful, fun, and always exciting medium - never gets old (in my opinon!). To help answer your question about snow, my tip would be to find a reference photo of a tree with snow on it's branches, preferably up close so you can concentrate on it at a closer-up scale just for practice! Then, try to sketch or draw not the tree, but the white parts (the snow) and look at what shapes the snow is making around the branches...when you go in to paint, paint around the white - that's how I 'look' at the snow and paint negatively around it. Hopefully that helps! Also, regarding your worry around your shaky hands - I actually think that could be something very unique about your art! Actually when I paint and draw I will consciously "force" a shake or a variation to get a line with more character. Also when you are painting with watercolors strokes especially in 'loose paintings', I really believe it will add character to your work. Think of it as your unique style , it is the way your hand (and only your hand) moves.

Beautiful Susan.i started water colour painting since March 2020(due to lock down)..A friend of mine suggested watercolours are difficult to handle y not go for acrylic but I don't know may i am attracted to them i started water colours nd now am in love with them... I see recently many people doing wintery scenes and was in a doubt how they did snow on trees..Now found the answer...Wonderfully..Thanks for ur videos they really help..

I just found your channel. I really like your tutorials and style. Very nice. I have no experience of drawing or drawing with watercolor. Do you think I can still jump in and start with your lessons? Or I need to some basic lessons of drawing? Thank you.
@SusanChiang
@SusanChiang Год назад
Hi! Thanks for your question and kind words about my style and videos. As a person starting from the beginning, you are more than welcome to jump in (assuming you are asking about my lessons inside the Paint With Me membership community www.paintwithmecommunity.com) You do not have to be able to draw in order to watercolor (it helps, of course, but I love drawing and share tips and exercises as well inside our community). As for starting at the beginning with watercolors, I have a foundational watercolor course, Just Watercolor (usually $97), that is included inside Paint With Me as part of the membership. You can take that first AND you get access to ask questions as you are getting started. Let me know if you have any more questions!

@SusanChiang

Hi Karen! Thanks for asking, and that's a great question - I don't have this exact video inside the Paint With Me membership community (I believe that's what you're asking) but I do have a live demo version of the snowy tree and we've covered the techniques to do all 3 versions in more depth as well. I'm always adding to the community, so if I can dig out the realtime version then you've just given me the idea to add it into our video library as well! (You can join us inside at www.paintwithmecommunity.com - the community is currently closed because we just "moved" so I'm making sure we all get settled in before opening back up soon - in March 2022!) Feel free to let me know if you have more questions: hello[at]susanchiang.com

Hi wonderful video thank you for sharing, I was wondering if I don't have paynes grey in my pallette, what colors would you recommend to make paynes grey?
@SusanChiang
@SusanChiang 4 года назад
Hi Kamaria! Thank you so much for the kind words! If you don't have Paynes Grey you can mix Burnt Sienna with Ultramarine Blue! That's a very "classic" combination to get a grey. And I love it because you can use more burnt sienna for a beautiful warm grey (my favorite way to get a warm grey) or add more blue for a cooler gray (more like paynes!) Hope that helps!

Does it matter what color the tree is, I mean for practice?
@SusanChiang

In my opinion, nope - not at all! It's more about learning your way around your tools and playing with the techniques - not about what color you use. Thanks for asking!

I followed this tutorial and I didn’t find it helpful at all. Need a close up of the brush strokes and slow it done I feel like this video just shows you painting trees with minimal explanation... not really a tutorial.
@SusanChiang
@SusanChiang 3 года назад
You’re right, it’s not truly a tutorial as it’s not step-by-step but rather a documentation of my own painting practice with, as you said, minimal explanation. We tend to all learn in different ways, and I tend to just need a basic idea of what someone is doing, whereas others (perhaps like yourself) need to really see it stroke by stroke and there’s nothing wrong with that at all! There are some great skillshare classes out there and other RU-vid videos that follow this format. It’s great you can recognize your own learning style so you can seek out the right type of tutorials for you! Thanks for your feedback. ❤️
