Always remember 2k clear coats are extremely dangerous. Coming from an ER nurse, you should ALWAYS wear a respirator while in a well ventilated area when using a clear coat. Isocyanate or methyl isocyanate can cause severe mucous membrane irritation as well as persistent coughing, and chest pains. If isocyanate poisoning is severe enough, it can even cause you to lose consciousness.

In other videos a respirator recommended and shown while shooting the 2K clear, but I guess not in this one. I just followed his directions to re-clear one of our cars and, yeah, a respirator is a must. I don't know how he shot so many coats of clear/paint w/o passing out. 🤷‍♂

Top Tip to reduce orange peel. Put the rattle cans in hot water before you use them, so the paint is warm. 50-60°C (120-140°F) depends on your hands and what's written on the can as temperature that may not be exceeded. Let the can warm for 20 minutes and spin it regularly so the hot and the cold paint mix.

I appreciate the work you put in while making this video. Creating a video easily doubles the time it takes to do a job, plus the extra time to finish the video and get it posted. But a few points - a removable vehicle panel, like a hood, is best painted when removed from the vehicle. Use a suction cup handle to give yourself a better grip. If you really want to do it on the vehicle, start painting at the back of the hood - nearest the windshield - and move in one continuous sweep from one side to the other; don't stop in the middle. A guide coat is usually used by bodymen to highlight extremely small dips in a panel; a light contrasting paint coat is applied, then sanded off using a sanding board (as opposed to holding sandpaper in your hand). The rigidity of the sanding board causes the sandpaper to stay flat; then, when the guide coat is sanded off, small dips in the metal still contain guide coat paint, thus highlighting areas that need body filler. Your hood didn't look like it needed any reshaping, just a good sand and paint job; so you probably didn't need the guide coat. Be careful using a tac cloth; some can leave adhesive residue. A better choice is to vacuum the surface, using a bristle brush attachment to mechanically dislodge dust particles. If you want to use a cloth, a new, dry microfiber cloth can work quite well. Store it in a zip-loc bag between uses, so it doesn't get covered with dust from the air. I bought a pack of 20 from Amazon, and keep clean ones in a zip-loc bag; when they're used they go in the hamper to be washed, after which they go back in a zip-loc bag. This means I always have a certified fresh cloth when I need it. When I started painting cars, I didn't have a garage; so I built kind of a lean-to frame - kind of a tent - out of pvc pipe and pvc joints, then covered it with a painters drop cloth. This allowed me to work on one section of the car at a time. I'd start with sanding, working in the open air; when it came time to paint I'd assemble the PVC frame in a size and shape large enough to cover the area I was working on and allow me to paint inside the tent. Then I'd cover the area to be painted with the frame, scrunch in under the drop cloth and paint it, then get out and let it dry. It kept a lot of dust and bugs from settling in the paint. It also kept the paint fumes from getting into my lungs. Anyway, I hope these thoughts give you some fresh ideas. Don't mean to be critical; you're clearly getting stuff done, and that's the most important part of any job. I just felt that these comments might help someone. Keep on keeping on... >Charlie

Why would you R&I the hood just for a simple repair that require no mud work at all. No sense in having to take extra time to do that when you could be doing the repair in that time. The. Having to line up the hood again and wait for it to dry to handle it? And really honestly for the best repair you should blend your fenders since he is basing the entire hood. You would lose your ass in a commission pay body shop doing that...

Thanks for a great video. I followed your instructions to the letter when I fixed the clearcoat damage on the front of my RV. It worked great! My only issue was the spray tip that came with the base coat cans. It was way too narrow and at the time of application I was too dumb to try the tips from the primer or clearcoat cans. I made do however and I'm very happy with the results.

Great video. Please keep SAFETY in mind. You should not be doing this without a respirator, especially the 2k paints. It's insta-cancer. To anyone looking to do this, PLEASE invest $20 in a 3M respirator.
@batman9512
@batman9512 6 лет назад
David Vogt I won't even use the the $20 respirators when I'm spraying 2K. IMO, they don't offer a good enough seal. I will only use at least a full-face respirator like the 3M 6800. Additionally, cartridges meant to filter out isocyanates, such as the 3M 60921, which offers up to 8 hours of isocyanate protection, should be used. This stuff is dangerous.

I´ve seen several of your videos. This one keeps the good level. Thanks for sharing. ;-) My 2 cents to anyone doing this. Use the new spray can in the horizontal area first. Then move to the vertical area. Otherwise a lot of paint might go to waste and irregular paint pattern can become an issue. If possible, it´s better to remove the hood and paint it in a vertical position or close to it. Many rattle cans have a straight pick up tube, so when half empty start to pull out only the gas. Hope it makes sense. :-) Cheers

Great video but you need to wear a respirator that filters out organic vapors when spraying any 2k primer or clear. People have died from not wearing the proper respirator working in body shops. Back in the early 80's when Ditzler came out with Deltron acrylic urethane ,our local Ditzler jober told me that the Ditz rep for alaska nearly died from not wearing a respirator when they were testing Deltron. His blood became so thick it nearly hardened in his veins,the dude was very lucky to survive. Dangerous atmospheres will kill you quick. Even bondo / primer dust will get you.

Housework can be done anytime. I love caring for my apartment and my cars. Learned from my father, my brothers & a good car club friend. Also from the National El Camino Association on Facebook. I have a 2002 & a 1983 El Camino. Just learning more about body work now. It's a lot of work, but very satisfying. Now to learn to paint! Will be fun this guy's way!!

As the can is slow method comparing to the gun, I was a bit surprised that You started from the middle. I got excellent results without later sanding by starting from the side going wet over the hood. Next layer wet enough, and it came just fine. The garage was cool enough, as was the can to allow working time. Modern 2K clears in a can are better than most think. I also used once a nozzle button from a primer can with the clear can, it has bigger "hole", so it sprays much bigger flow, and it sometimes helps but has a bit less ideal spray pattern that must be kept in mind.

Actually, start moving your arm BEFORE you start spraying. This prevents runs and build-ups. And, keep moving your arm AFTER you stop spraying. Same reason. Very inspirational video. I've been wanting to do my van and now I feel that I can do it. The problem with the van is that the clear coat on the fiberglass raised roof top is flaking off in large pieces but the color coat is fine, just dull. Every time I go to the car wash I use the pressure-wand to remove another few inches of clear coat.
